There are 1.8 million Indigenous people in Canada, accounting for five percent of the total population. They speak more than seventy languages and represent many different cultures. With recent land claims and the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools, the situation of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis has gained critical attention. Teaching Indigenous Studies, however, is a difficult endeavor, as educators must be knowledgeable and sensitive about Indigenous histories, cultures, traditions, and political issues.Incorporating the latest research in anthropology, ethnography, history, literary and film studies, the chapters in this book focus on current matters such as traditional ways of life, land claims, and self-government, trace cultural changes that resulted from contacts with the Europeans, and discuss the process of reconciliation. Referring to Indigenous perspective in the analysis of cultures and the teaching of these issues, the authors have included many Indigenous voices and sources, and explore the institutions that provide Indigenous communities in Canada with national and international visibility.
While losing love and innocence in the chaos of the music industry, good-natured yet naive Tobi finds himself.
Guns, Girls, and Greed is an unvarnished, behind-the-scenes, tell-all account of the scathing and dangerous life of mercenaries at war in Iraq.Experience the world of private contractors conducting high-threat missions for a nascent Iraqi government in the hopes of rebuilding after the fall of Saddam Hussein. With limited support, the men of Blackwater protected US diplomats as the country descended into sectarian violence. It was a hazardous mission complete with rockets, mortars, improvised explosive devices, and not knowing who or where the enemy was. Morgan Lerette’s irreverently honest memoir shows the good and bad of injecting private armies into active combat zones in the name of diplomacy and digs deep into the bonds of brotherhood created by war. With gut-wrenching tragedy, dark humor, and parties that make Animal House seem like a Disney film, this memoir offers a firsthand perspective on how men act and react in war. Lerette, a private contractor employed by the notorious Blackwater in the early days of the Iraq War, pulls no punches in calling out the incompetence of both the US military and the Department of State during the collapse of Iraq. You can decide if the insertion of private contractors in Iraq assisted or detracted from the war effort and if the costs in blood and treasure were worth the carnage.
"Climate destruction is a problem of political power. We have the resources for a green transition, but how can we neutralize the influence of Exxon and Shell? Abolishing Fossil Fuels argues that the climate movement has started to turn the tide against fossil fuels, just too gradually. The movement's partial victories show us how the industry can be further undermined and eventually abolished. Activists have been most successful when they've targeted the industry's enablers: the banks, insurers, and big investors that finance its operations, the companies and universities that purchase fossil fuels, and the regulators and judges who make life-and-death rulings about pipelines, power plants, and drilling sites. This approach has jeopardized investor confidence in fossil fuels, leading the industry to lash out in increasingly desperate ways. The fossil fuel industry's financial and legal enablers are also its Achilles heel. The most powerful movements in US history succeeded in similar ways. The book also includes an in-depth analysis of four classic victories: the abolition of slavery, battles for workers' rights in the 1930s, Black freedom struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, and the fight for clean air. Those movements inflicted costs on economic elites through strikes, boycotts, and other mass disruption. They forced some sectors of the ruling class to confront others, which paved the way for victory. Electing and pressuring politicians was rarely the movements' primary focus. Rather, gains in the electoral and legislative realms were usually the byproducts of great upsurges in the fields, factories, and streets. Those historic movements show that it's very possible to defeat capitalist sectors that may seem invulnerable. They also show us how it can be done. They offer lessons for building a multiracial, working-class climate movement that can win a global green transition that's both rapid and equitable"--
The day of President Kennedy's assassination, the Dallas Police discovered a rifle on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, they identified the rifle as a German Mauser rifle. Three days after President Kennedy's assassination a young twenty-year-old named Harry L. Power walked into the Terre Haute House, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He had no luggage, although he did carry a long paper package and according to FBI reports, a Young Communist League Card in his wallet. He registered at the hotel giving a San Antonio, Texas address. Two days later the maid found that he had left behind a 7.65 Argentine German Mauser Rifle, Model 1891. At the time, there were two very prominent CIA guys who were from Terre Haute. William King Harvey oversaw the Mafia and the anti-Castro Cubans trying to assassinate Castro. Bill Harvey's Cuban agents discovered the missiles going into Cuba. Harvey should have been hailed as a hero, but unfortunately Bill Harvey and Robert Kennedy were not getting along and Harvey's career and position in the CIA suffered greatly as a result. William King Harvey is on the record as saying he, "hating Bobby Kennedy's guts with a purple passion." Some speculate that Bill Harvey was responsible for the assassination of President Kennedy. Was this rifle left in Terre Haute as a calling card from Bill Harvey to Bobbie Kennedy? Or, did Kim Philby, the Soviet spy who Bill Harvey unmasked eleven years earlier, arrange for the rifle to come to Terre Haute to call attention to Bill Harvey, in an effort to make Bill Harvey look guilty? Our second CIA guy, Ray Cline, was the Deputy Director of Intelligence at the CIA, second only to the Director of the CIA. Ray Cline may have come close to being shot in the Terre Haute House while making a speech to his and William King Harvey's old high school alma mater, Wiley High School, at Wiley's 100 Year Centennial Celebration in the Terre Haute House. Oswald left us a clue as to who was behind the assassination, this story will reveal the clue.
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio proposes a perception of reality and of what lies beyond it. The rational, the irrational and the transrational are fundamentally linked to this author's writing. His writing is a philosophy of existence, with all its certainties and uncertainties. Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio's writing is marked by reflection and perpetual questioning. One might even say that it is writing at the frontiers of human thought in its relationship to knowledge and truth. The questions that pile up in Leclézio's novels bear witness to a kind of repeated anxiety that runs through the stories and the characters.

"A former counterterrorism official explores how modern evangelicalism and right-wing conservatism intermingled to form the combustible ideology that resulted in the January 6 attacks on the Capitol--and which threatens to destroy the American Church from within. In Kingdom of Rage, Neumann explores the forces within American society that have encouraged the radicalization of white supremacist, anti-government and other far-right terrorists by co-opting Christian symbols and culture and perverting the faith's teachings. While Neumann offers decades of insights into the role government policies can play to prevent further bloodshed, she believes real change must come from the within the Christian church. She shines a bright light on the responsibility of ordinary Americans - and particularly American Christians - to work within their families and their communities to counteract the narrative of victimization and marginalization within American evangelicalism. Her goal for this book is not only to sound a warning about one of the greatest threats to our security but to rescue the Church from the forces that will, if left unchecked, destroy it - culturally, morally, and ultimately quite literally. This is a book for anyone who wants to understand the unholy marriage of right-wing politics and Christian exceptionalism in America and who wants to be a part of reversing the current path towards division, hatred, violence and the ultimate undermining of both evangelical Christianity and American democracy"--

'Corporeal Battlegrounds' explores the depiction and critical potential of the entanglement of work and embodiment in contemporary realist U.S.-American novels. It argues that manifesting the elusive effects of contemporary capitalism in the figure of the laboring body allows for a critique of capitalism. The laboring body thus provides a gateway to understanding how power relations are perpetuated by the work we engage in and to revealing the inherent logic of capitalism. To provide a comprehensive view, each larger section examines one aspect of contemporary capitalism in conversation with a novel: social acceleration, digitalization, financialization, and 24/7 capitalism. These sections question how the novels approach the representability of economic relations and how the depiction of the laboring body functions to open up an area of tension to criticize the link between the laboring body, economic participation, and the perception of failure and success.

"The incredible story of MOVE, the revolutionary Black civil liberties group that Philadelphia police bombed in 1985, killing 11 civilians-by one of the few people born into the organization, raised during the bombing's tumultuous aftermath, and entrusted with repairing what was left of his family. Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression, drawing ideology from the Black Panther Party, PETA, and Earth First. The organization emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs and Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance. MOVE members lived together in a commune of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. But in MOVE's lifestyle, city officials saw threats to their status quo. Their bombing of the MOVE commune shocked the nation and made international news. Eleven people were killed, including five children. And the City of Brotherly Love became known as the City That Bombed Itself. Among the children most affected by the bombing was Mike Africa Jr. Born in jail following a police attack on MOVE that led to his parents' decades-long incarcerations, Mike was six years old and living with his grandmother when the commune was bombed. In the ensuing years, Mike sought purpose in the ashes left behind. He began learning about the law as a teenager and became adept at speaking and inspiring public support with the help of other MOVE members. In 2018, at age 40, he finally succeeded in getting his parents released from prison. ON A MOVE is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing"--
After more than one year of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, thousands of civilians have been killed, and thousands of buildings, heritage sites, and entire cities have been damaged. Along with millions of other Ukrainian women and children, architectural historian Ievgeniia Gubkina had to leave the country, moving further away from the Russian threat in search of safety. Her hometown Kharkiv still remains a target for the Russian army. The war has dramatically changed the geographies of nearly all Ukrainians and returned the work of an architectural critic to the traditional mainstream of journalism. This shift has taken Gubkina's thoughts from the academic context and made them more akin to war reporting. This book contains papers presented, printed, or published online by various media in different parts of the world during the first eight months of the all-out war. Most of the texts were written in late spring and summer 2022 after Ievgeniia and her teenage daughter had evacuated to Paris.
