How did liberationist Christianity develop in Argentina between the 1930s and early 1970s? And how did it respond to state terrorism during the Dirty War?How did liberation theology develop in Argentina between the 1930s and early 1970s? And how did it respond to state terrorism during the Dirty War? Understanding the movement to be dynamic and highly diverse, this book reveals that ecclesial and political conflicts, especially over Peronism and celibacy, were at the heart of the construction of a liberationist Christian identity, which simultaneously internalised deep tensions over its relationship to the Catholic Church. It first situates the rise of a revolutionary Christian impulse in Argentina within changes in society, in Catholicism and Protestantism and in Marxism in the 1930s, before analysing how the phenomenon coalesced in the late sixties into a coherent social movement. Finally, the book examines the responses of liberationist Christians to the intense period of repression under the presidency of Isabel Peron and the rule of the military junta between 1974 and 1983. By exploring these distinct responses and uncovering the heterogeneity of liberationist Christianity, the book offers a fresh analysis of a movement that occupies a major role in the popular memory of the period of state terror, and provides a corrective to narratives that depict the movement as monolithic or as a passive victim of the dictatorship.

A breathtaking short novel about the complicated feelings of hate and pity in familial love by an acknowledged Latin American master.A brilliant and dark tour de force, Jewish Son presents the delicate archeology of the stubbornness of a boy who demands his parents’ attention. It is a brutal confession of the lies necessary to win a space of approval in a troubled family, a treatise on the excesses of love and the paradoxical lack of affection that is never enough, an accomplished narration of childhood from the point of view of the adult gaze, and a rewriting of Kafka’s Letter to His Father. As his father’s imminent death becomes an ever more concrete reality with surgeries, caregivers, sedatives and his mother grows obsessed with visits to the rabbi and amasses saint cards and Buddhist prayers, the narrator evokes the remnants of the rejection that pervaded his childhood.Without yielding to the idealization of youth or to the delight in pain before physical decay and death, Guebel dissects, beautifully although with discomfort, his very early conversion to the dream of literature as an act of reparation.

La autora va a aplastar ese material, maleable e inasible, para que quepa entre las tapas de este libro.ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONThe Heart of Harm, this literary devise, open and complex, restores the domestic dictionary of insults and threats, where words project their power of foreshadowing from the distant family home and turn dreams into nightmares.   María Negroni’s work shuns away from all taxonomies. Her most obvious reference might be Anne Carson.  In The Heart of Harm, Negroni blends biography, intimate entries, sharp and keen observation, political chronicle, family lexicon, and the song of the desperate. All the necessary resources to tell a life and bid farewell to a mother both exasperating and desperate. But in her recovery, which is nothing but grief, there’s a new intention: sharing these experiences and literary associations. “A difficult and beautiful woman is at the heart and the circumference of that house. She has big eyes, lips painted red. Her name is Isabel.”   Memories of that mother that takes up everything surge crystal-clear, but in order to think about them and convey them—to give her flesh from words—memory becomes an object you must rotate. From each face of the prism, a ray of light dissolves. Or is it that memory is actually a sphere? The author is going to crush that malleable and elusive matter to make it fit the covers of this book.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION A taut, lyrical portrait of four people thrown together on a single day in rural Argentina The Wind That Lays Waste begins in the great pause before a storm. Reverend Pearson is evangelizing across the Argentinian countryside with Leni, his teenage daughter, when their car breaks down. This act of God or fate leads them to the workshop and home of an aging mechanic called Gringo Brauer and a young boy named Tapioca. As a long day passes, curiosity and intrigue transform into an unexpected intimacy between four people: one man who believes deeply in God, morality, and his own righteousness, and another whose life experiences have only entrenched his moral relativism and mild apathy; a quietly earnest and idealistic mechanic's assistant, and a restless, skeptical preacher's daughter. As tensions between these characters ebb and flow, beliefs are questioned and allegiances are tested, until finally the growing storm breaks over the plains. Selva Almada's exquisitely crafted novel, with its limpid and confident prose, is profound and poetic, a tactile experience of the mountain, the sun, the squat trees, the broken cars, the sweat-stained shirts, and the destroyed lives. The Wind That Lays Waste is a philosophical, beautiful, and powerfully distinctive novel that marks the arrival in English of an author whose talent and poise are undeniable. An essential novel, winner of the First Book Award at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, The Wind That Lays Waste immediately turned Selva Almada into a powerfuland new voice that projected its uniqueness to all Argentine literature.

This is an unique "smart" travel guide, which I made at first to be solely used in my own, after buying so many travel guides and still feeling - they aren't good enough for my adventures to explore wilderness as a biologist and wildlife photographer. I was missing it during my trip to Patagonia in 2017, otherwise, I would be much more efficient as a wildlife photographer and traveler. With this first book, I start my new "wilderness explorer series", which I hope, will be a good "practical tool", an all-to-know set of guide books for you (for me as well), while you are exploring the world with responsible mind and open heart as a truly nature lover. The book contains 60 GPS coordinates of important to know places, 35 website links, covering about 20 different the most spectacular sightseeing locations at the Peninsular Valdes and around, it has a detailed wildlife map, and over 20 photographs I made in March-April 2017. The book describes all specific photographic seasons when wild animals can be sighted: e.g. when orcas, killer whales, can beach themselves in order to catch sea lion pups, or when is the best to see Magellanic penguins or fighting "beachmasters" of gigantic Elephant seals with intruder male seals, or when and where is the best to be to witness Southern Right whales coming very close to shores with their calves vocalizing and breaching out of peninsula's waters. I also give all the information for wild and paid camping, hotels and hostels, supermarkets, gasoline stations and ATMs, roads conditions, travel scenarios, airports, public buses, prices for certain touristic services, wildlife safaris, whale watching. There is a very detailed and updated chapter for travel means with long-distance buses and flights in Patagonia and Argentina, including how to get in/out in Buenos Aires airports, a main bus station, and a train station. The book can be equally useful for "budget" adventure seekers, "fast & easy" with a rented car or travel agency travelers as well as for paid wildlife and travel photographers on a mission.Printed versions of the book went far beyond of my anticipations; quality is highest standard possible, they are rather small (15x23 cm), light-weight (only 150 g each), fully colorful inside with maps and GPS coordinates, pages are robustly made and glued, the cover is made of water-repellent paper, books are flexible, you can bend them, nothing will happen... though, they are ideal to put them into your backpack and use them while you travel through wonderful Patagonia... Enjoy and take care!

"The literature of the twenty-first century will belong to Neuman." -Roberto BolañoSearching for an inn, the enigmatic traveler Hans stops in a small city on the border between Saxony and Prussia. The next morning, Hans meets an old organ-grinder in the market square and immediately finds himself enmeshed in an intense debate-on identity and what it is that defines us-from which he cannot break free. Indefinitely stuck in Wandernburg until his debate with the organ-grinder is concluded, he begins to meet the various characters who populate the town, including a young freethinker named Sophie. Though she is engaged to be married, Sophie and Hans begin a relationship that defies contemporary mores about female sexuality and what can and cannot be said about it. Traveler of the Century is a deeply intellectual novel, chock-full of discussions about philosophy, history, literature, love, and translation. It is a book that looks to the past in order to have us reconsider the conflicts of our present. The winner of Spain's prestigious Alfaguara Prize and the National Critics Prize, Traveler of the Century marks the English-language debut of Andrés Neuman, a writer described by Roberto Bolaño as being "touched by grace."

"Demetrio Rota, a garbage collector from Buenos Aires, sleeps in the afternoons and assembles puzzles at night before leaving for work. His daily life is mediocre and he keeps his balance through sheer exhaustion. However, through the puzzles, Demetrio inspects and sorts through his own memories. At the end of the journey through his history, the present seems to devour him, until he's left with only the emptiness of himself and his daily misery. A parable of memory and deterioration, Andrâes Neuman's Bariloche juxtaposes the astonished memories of youth with a skeptical conscience; the impossible idealization of nature or first love with the moral and physical suffocation of the big city; being uprooted with returning to one's origins, with a language fascinated by both lyricism and rottenness"--

A rising star of Argentine lit offers a provocatively offbeat coming-of-age story about a teen girl with the ability to solve crimes by ingesting the dirt on which the newly dead or missing once walked.” — O, The Oprah Magazine “This brief and original novel is, in its conception, a punch to the chest—and, curiously enough, at the same time it is pure light. ” — Hinde Pomeraniec, Infobae “From the first line, Cometierra (Earth Eater) plunges its readers into a dark, fascinating universe and poses challenges through its dialogue with this time.” — Ivana Romero, Página 12“Earth Eater is a riveting tale, dark and visceral, that brilliantly explores structural violence against women.
