John Moore and his wife, Margaret Moore (née Considine), were early European pioneers who settled in around 1843 in the North East of what was then known as the Port Phillip District of the Colony of New South Wales and is now the State of Victoria. Like the great majority of their fellow settlers, neither John nor Margaret was born in Australia.John Moore was born in Woodchurch, Kent in 1816. He emigrated from England to New South Wales in 1838 when 22 years of age. In contrast, Margaret Considine was born at Sixmilebridge, County Clare in about 1818. She first arrived from Ireland in New South Wales in 1836 aged 18 years old. Both John and Margaret came from poor rural stock. The prospect of a better life in Australia was no doubt the prime motivation for each to independently migrate across the world to New South Wales.

'Herein, we find poetry replete with eloquence and imagination, with the ages and stages of life, of dreamtime and daytime, heartache and humour. Within this book, we find the work of an artist who loves words, a writer who is in love with Creation itself. Each poem has a sense of story. Each one throbs with life being lived - the deep steady rhythm of our lives going on despite all, the ability of poetry to create light out of darkness, joy out of sorrow. Deep wisdom flows within each poem. Words are stitched like silken threads, to mend you, woven together to enfold you in the world of the poet and her poetry.' - Oriel Parker
Petra White is a distinctive voice in Australian poetry. That Galloping Horse is her sixth collection, and the first to introduce her to UK readers. Written while living in Melbourne, London and Berlin between 2017 and 2023, this new collection includes 13 elegies that mediate a spiritual anguish through a delight in language and the physical world. White's characteristic, often dark playfulness is also abundant in this collection, with short mysterious lyrics that build layers of irony, and raw narratives that traverse the Nullarbor Highway and the atomic cloud of Maralinga. In its flexible and changeable styles, That Galloping Horse catches many thematic concerns, including proximity to the Ukraine War, domestic life in the reality of planetary demise, the strangeness of post-pandemic Berlin, modern work, marriage and the possibilities of familial love.Comments on previous collections:"This is a very accomplished and very complex first book by a poet who can be said to be, already, of considerable importance." -Martin Duwell, Australian Poetry Review, on The Incoming Tide"Among our poets, I was moved by Petra White with the intense inwardness attained in her near-collected A Hunger." -Chris Wallace-Crabbe, The Sydney Morning Herald, Books of the Year 2015"'How the Temple was Built' is not an easy poem to describe. Suffice to say that it has something in common with Arthur Boyd's biblical paintings and, arguably, with Ted Hughes's book-length poem Crow... it is satisfyingly physical and meta-physical at the same time." -Geoff Page, The Australian, on Reading for a Quiet Morning "Petra White's 'Ode on the End' is hectically imperilled - 'He gives/you the necks of your enemies/(fear must have foes)./He draws up a battle/where perhaps there was only a soul'. Her work is often Rilkean internal interrogation, with emphatic alliteration, but there are also finely executed portraits such as 'Older Sister' - 'chore-hungry and chore-fed ... Her fingers fly, her eyes are stone'. -Gig Ryan, The Sydney Morning Herald, on Thirty Australian Poets
Redreaming the Renaissance offers twelve essays that build on the pathbreaking work of Guido Ruggiero in blending history and literature. Within this volume, contributors take interdisciplinary approaches to examining not only belles lettres but also other forms of artful expression, bringing their fields into conversation and reflecting on the methodology needed to sustain and enrich this conversation.
"With tenderness and with a true poet's eye, Gaetano Aiello brings the streets and parklands and beaches of his native Adelaide to shimmering, sometimes phantasmagorical life. The title poem, 'The Underside of Bark,' is a meditation - gripping, hallucinatory, profound - on Australian and South Australian identity, a true dreaming." - JM Coetzee

This book explores the people of the Kikori River Delta, in the Gulf of Papua, as established historical agents of intercultural exchange. One hundred years after they were made, Frank Hurley¿s colonial-era photographic reproductions are returned to the descendants of the Kerewo and Urama peoples, whom he photographed. The book illuminates how the movement, use, and exchange of objects can produce distinctive and unrecognised forms of value. To understand this exchange, a nuanced history of the conditions of the exchange is necessary, which also allows a reconsideration of the colonial legacies that continue to affect the social and political worlds of people in the twenty-first century.
'I came from a traditional Buddhist family. When I came to Australia to study in high school in 1971, I was an atheist. One person tried to share with methe gospel of Jesus Christ. I had so many questions for him, but he couldn't answer them. ... [I came to know the Lord] through the ministry of OCF, especially through Lim Kim Bew and his wife, Judy, who are ex-OCFers. They have been very good in reaching out to overseas students, opening theirhome and showing us the love. Many of us came to know the Lord Jesus Christ, not only because of the Gospel, but also the love of this couple, plus missionaries who have returned from China, because of their commitment to the ministry of OCF. The missionaries couldn't go back to China, but their heart for the Lord to reach out to the Chinese was still with them. There were many Chinese in OCF, so they stayed in OCF and ministered to many of us.'- Chris Chua, OCF Australiachairperson 1976, 1977, co-chair with Koo Tuk Su in 1981In 2019, the 60th Overseas Christian Fellowship (Australia) convention sparked an initiative to investigate and preserve the history of the organisation. This came out of a realisation that founding members were now in their eighties. Unless urgent action was taken, some of the history would be lostforever. In the last four years, a heritage team has been interviewing people who've been involved from the 1950s until the present. Come with us on a journey to hear their stories, follow the highs and lows, and see how God calls forth long-lasting fruit out of the fleeting years of our student days.

One of Australia's finest essayists, the first to cut through 'the great Australian silence' to convey the richness and uniqueness of Aboriginal culture to settler Australians'The most literate and persuasive of all contributions on Australia's Indigenous people' -Marcia LangtonW.E.H. Stanner's words changed Australia. In his 1968 Boyer Lectures he exposed a 'cult of forgetfulness practised on a national scale', regarding the fate of First Nations people, for which he coined the phrase 'the great Australian silence'. And in his essay 'Durmugam' he provided an unforgettable portrait of a warrior's attempt to hold back cultural change. The pieces collected here span Stanner's career as well as the history of Australian race relations. They reveal the extraordinary scholarship, humanity and vision of one of Australia's finest essayists. Stanner's writings remain relevant in a time of reckoning with white Australia's injustices against Aboriginal people and the path to reconciliation. With an introduction by Robert Manne'Bill Stanner was a superb essayist with a wonderful turn of phrase and ever fresh prose. He always had important things to say, which have not lost their relevance. It is wonderful that they will now be available to a new and larger audience.' -Henry Reynolds'Stanner's essays still hold their own among this country's finest writings on matters black and white.' -Noel Pearson

They are a penetrating account of the people who have led Australia, fusing character studies with political insights and unvarnished rage. This is writing that is witty, curious and sharp-eyed.'These editorials are my guiding light in these terrible times.' -Marcia Langton AO
