In 1972, a group of prisoners at Parramatta Jail in Sydney put together a glossary of prison words and phrases. It is a list of 362 words with definitions. Many of the terms describe life in the prison, including punishments, the psychological effects of incarceration, and male to male sex. Others come from the prisoners' encounters with police and the legal system or from the prisoners' place in a wider underworld or criminal culture. The book examines the social functions of underworld and prison slang, especially its role in creating a world that stands in opposition to the 'ordinary' world that most of us inhabit. It shows that prison language is the cement that holds together the structure of the prisoners' alternative reality. The major part of the book is a detailed edition of the words and phrases that make up the Parramatta Jail Glossary. It explains what the words mean and where they came from. There are extensive quotations from texts such as newspapers, novels, and autobiographies that illustrate how the words in the glossary are used in speech and writing. They bring to life the social world of the prisoners.

  • af Lindsay Fitzclarence
    252,95 kr.

The mining industry in Australia is central to the country's image and economy. But how much do we really know about its environmental and social consequences? In this revealing and disturbing travelogue, Lindsay Fitzclarence visits seven mining sites in regional and remote areas of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, describing the industry's damaging effects on the environment, workers and local communities, and how it vandalises Aboriginal land rights. Fitzclarence also visits various places in between the mining sites, where the notion of terra nullius has provided cover for appalling state-sanctioned activities. The book poses challenging questions about mining's future, about whether the extraction of 'clean' critical minerals will cause similar damage, and about possible alternatives.

On the Dialler is the poet Aaron Ingram's first collect of poems. These poems are largely the product of the physical space in which they were written-a Call Centre. As physical spaces go, the demands forced upon me did require of me a particular type of endurance whilst in the pursuit of income. That, in my time between calls, I was able to draft the bones of these poems is a far greater reward than any financial recompense for telephone operator services rendered. Each poem sits in the chronological order of its original rendering. Whilst each section-or Part, as it were-denotes an undisclosed block of time, the duration of each is immaterial; as, the implicit feeling of one journeying onwards to a final destination is (seemingly) an over-arching feature of the collection, when treated as a whole-at least this is both my hope and intention.

In her first full-length collection of poetry, Tarla Kramer recounts the final days of her husband's life and her long journey of grief as a mother with four young children.'Tango of the Widow is a poignant depiction of the death of a loved husband, as Tarla Kramer relives the progression of his illness and her grief and sense of loss. She writes with a raw energy, bringing to life the desolation of his departure and the pain of memories, in a charting of the time from diagnosis to her gradual re-emergence in the years after his death. The book is a brave and ultimately hopeful account of the way one copes with tragedy.' - Valerie Volk, author of In Due Season, Marking Time, In Search of Anna'These poems compel by their matter-of-factness, as they unflinchingly confront the reality of sickness and death. They move us by their precision, restraint and gravity. Those who are grieving or trying to understand their grief-stricken neighbour will benefit from reading this book.' - Aidan Coleman

'Decades of experience inform Hologrammatical - Philip Salom's new book is full of intricate, dazzling, and defiant poems.' - Toby DavidsonPhilip Salom's major new collection explores human and natural existence - as life-force and loss, and for diverse symptoms of achievement and folly. His intense scrutiny gives air to the unavoidable complexity of voices raised and voices ignored. Whether it's injury and mortality (our own) or disturbance and urgency (our climate), Salom uses a subtle insight and a restless, inventive wit to create interweaving fugues through time and memory. Within this, his fifteenth collection, the KGB might even read a brilliant taxonomy of their leader with enough alarm to ensure the poet is fed calming tea. But these are serious times, and these poems are meditative acts of witness.

  • af Morgan Yasbincek
    182,95 kr.

Within this robust and delicate collection, Morgan Yasbincek simultaneously explores and invokes a constellation of poetic voices that all, ultimately, resolve into the nothing which gives them birth. Presence gives way to absence and absence hints at something beyond a restoration of presence, something her poems take seriously and ground through disruption, 'the vowels of silence', and the truth of life, lived, grieved and continued.Ever becoming, and eternally un-becoming, this intimate and sensual collection brings us close to tongues which become plants, daughters who unfold through Ancient Hindu plays and verdant landscapes which are forever speaking of the stillness beyond all things. All is animate, all have voices here, even in the silence and darkness of separation and loss. With Sappho as compañera and the Fragment pointing to what always is, Morgan's crafting of words awakens a world we have always known and always failed to name.

Iceland, also known as the Land of Fire and Ice, is well-known for its breathtaking landscapes, geothermal marvels, and distinctive cultural history. Whale watching, on the other hand, is without a doubt one of the most mesmerizing and awe-inspiring activities that this Nordic island nation has to offer. Iceland's rich marine ecology is home to a vast assortment of whales and other marine life, making it a prime location for anyone seeking encounters with these gentle giants of the sea. Because Iceland is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, it is one of the best places in the world to watch whales. Whales have found paradise in this natural havenIceland's icy seas provide a safe sanctuary for a wide range of whale species, making it an ideal destination for individuals who have always dreamed of seeing these beautiful creatures in their native environment. The country's advantageous position between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans enables a continuous flow of nutrient-rich waters, making it a perfect home for both resident whales and whales that migrate through the area. Orcas, humpback whales, and minke whales are among the whale species that are most frequently spotted in Icelandic seas. Humpback whales and blue whales, two of the largest mammals on Earth, also make occasional visits in Icelandic waters. The large whales that inhabit IcelandIt's not uncommon for humpback whales, which are famous for their unique melodies and acrobatic performances, to take center stage on whale watching cruises in Iceland. These gentle giants can grow to a length of up to 50 feet and are famous for their beautiful breaches and tail flukes, which provide onlookers with moments that are just breath-taking. On the other hand, minke whales are more difficult to spot, yet they are nevertheless often encountered. They have a reputation for having a slick appearance and moving in an elegant manner, which has made them a favorite subject for photographers and fans. For those who are interested in wildlife, one of the most engaging things they can do is watch minke whales feed and surface. These waters in the Arctic are ruled by orcas, which are the most dangerous predators in the ocean. Whale watchers who are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these black-and-white giants in their family pods are treated to a fascinating show. Their intelligence as well as their behavior of working together to hunt is quite remarkable. Observation of Whales in a Responsible MannerIceland is dedicated to whale watching activities that are both responsible and sustainable, placing a priority on the protection of these incredible animals and the ecosystem in which they live in the ocean. The operators of tours abide by ethical norms, which ensure that the natural behaviors of whales are not altered in any way by the trips. When vessels are in close proximity to whales, appropriate distances are kept between them, and the engines are silenced to reduce the amount of noise pollution.

William Henry "Bully" Hayes (1827 or 1829 - 31 March 1877) was a notorious American ship's captain who engaged in blackbirding in the 1860s and 1870s. Hayes operated across the breadth of the Pacific Ocean from the 1850s until his murder on 31 March 1877. He has been described as a South Sea pirate and "the last of the buccaneers". It is almost impossible to separate fact from legend regarding Hayes. He was a cheap swindler, a bully, a con-artist, a thief and a bigamist. Hayes was a large man who used intimidation against his crew. This book "Bully Hayes the Blackbirder" traces his watery paths, from early ship's captain to China and throughout the Pacific islands, with intrigue and historical interest for readers and armchair adventurers.

Backtrack, BN Oakman's third full-length collection, is a suite of poems created in response to an observed, often baffling, world. Oakman writes with conviction in a direct and lively style, while employing various poetic forms to explore a wide range of emotions and experiences. He gives us poems crafted with empathy and humour about transient joys, abiding sadnesses, persistent injustices, fleeting triumphs and unassuageable grief - the whole exasperating mess and muddle of it all. Here are poems to engage the mind, touch the heart, nudge us to laughter, and occasionally, move us to tears.

  • af John Mateer
    207,95 kr.

Focusing on experiences of dislocation and on the importance of image and translation, That Nostalgia records John Mateer's travels and his witnessing of the inequities and pleasures of life in many parts of the world, from China and Japan, South-East Asia and Türkiye, through Portugal, and then, further west, to Mexico and the USA. Central to his poetics is an awareness of the artifice of the Imperial, or, as he coins it, "Empire, that Nostalgia". As the first European power to lose its global empire, Portugal plays a special role in Mateer's imagination; with its continuing connections to Asia and Africa, and its own cosmopolitan life led among the ruins. Having spent his youth in South Africa, Mateer's sensitivity to politics in all its forms allows him to make of that nostalgia various kinds of irony through which he can carefully observe the present world. Throughout the work he is attentive, not only to language itself, but also to its internalized practices, cultural and spiritual. That Nostalgia is more personal than Unbelievers, or 'The Moor' and more historically engaged than João: (sonnets). Its invitation to readers is to have them question their own subjectivity, their own unknowing, to reconsider the elusiveness of deep experience in a vast, often chaotic, contemporary world. The book collects poems written between 1995 and 2016, uniting work from publications that have appeared in Australia, Portugal, Macau, Sumatra, Japan, South Africa and the UK, most now out-of-print and rare, and it does not include work from the author's other Shearsman titles.

The aim of this study was to learn about the history of Octacílio Rodrigues da Silva, his parents and siblings who lived nearby. In 1919, the family settled in the present-day city of Giruá because they were building the railway, which would change the growth of the city and colonisation in the north-western region of Rio Grande do Sul. Since he was a policeman, he retired with the rank of colonel in the Military Brigade. This work involves his first brothers, inherited from his father. They are involved in various aspects of Brazilian and regional politics in the 1930s, the Prestes Column and the Second World War. It includes his studies and his private life after his retirement with philanthropic work. As a result, the story is both familiar and new from the point of view of the 97-year-old soldier.
