Der Beiname "Englische Suiten" stammt - genauso wie jener der "Französischen Suiten" - nicht von Bach. Im Gegensatz zu den intimen sechs "französischen" schlagen die "englischen" Suiten einen prächtigeren Tonfall an: Jede Suite wird von einem Prélude im konzertanten Stil eröffnet; für zwei Sarabanden sind von Bach zusätzlich ausgezierte Fassungen erhalten, die den virtuos-prunkvollen Cembalostil, der ihm hier vorschwebte, eindrücklich belegen. Auch wenn wir kein autographes Quellenmaterial kennen, ist der Notentext durch mehrere zeitgenössische Abschriften außergewöhnlich gut und zuverlässig überliefert. An innovative reading of the influence of Catholicism on the great Dutch master of light and intimacyLittle is known about the personality of Johannes Vermeer (1632-75), one of the most famous Dutch painters of the 17th century. We do know, however, that he married a Catholic woman named Catharina Bolnes, whose family was closely associated with the Jesuit community in Delft. In this book, Gregor J.M. Weber shows that Vermeer himself actually pursued a Catholic way of life. The relationship between the artistic ambitions of the young Vermeer and his Catholic surroundings is also discussed. Vermeer's unique treatment of light, perception and perspective is examined and linked to the Jesuits' special interest in the camera obscura, the instrument of light and vision par excellence. With his research, Weber places Vermeer's person and art in a new context, which until now has only been touched on in passing.Gregor J.M. Born in southern Germany, Philipp Jakob Straub is one of the most important representatives of 18th century Austrian Baroque sculpture. For the first time, his extensive oeuvre is brought together here from an international perspective and subjected to an in-depth analysis. Baroque depictions of violence are often dismissed as `over the top¿ and `excessive¿. Their material richness and exciting visual complexity, together with the visceral engagement they demand from beholders, are usually explained in literature as reflecting the presumed violence of early modern society. This book explores the intersection between materiality, excess, and violence in seventeenth-century paintings through a close analysis of some of the most iconic works of the period. Baroque paintings expose or reference their materiality by insisting on various physical changes wrought through violence. This study approaches violence as the work of materiality, which has the potential to analogously stage pictorial surfaces as corporeal surfaces, where paint becomes flayed flesh, canvas threads ruptured skin, and red paint spilt blood.

An illustrated guide to Rome through the life and art of the legendary Baroque painter The Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni (1575-1642) arrived in Rome in the early 17th century, where he painted extensively, forging a vision of the city that was uniquely his own. This volume introduces readers to Rome as seen through the eyes of this Bolognese master, including portraits of him upon his arrival in and departure from the city, and explores the current affairs of his day in order to contextualize the artist's great success. Images and descriptions of 22 locations around Rome-museums, churches, private and institutional residences-are presented in short descriptive texts focusing on the 17th century, as well as in engravings or paintings portraying them as they were when Reni was living there. The book also includes a selection of 27 works by Reni, accompanied by information regarding their iconography, history and conservation.

Did Spain fall into decline or flourish in the seventeenth century?

This is the first book to address the long art history of dynastic marriage exchange between Denmark and Britain between 1600 and 1900. It explores an intersection of three themes trending in early modern studies: portraiture, gender and the court as a centre of cultural exchange. The book re-evaluates the construction and staging of gender in Northern consort portraiture over a span of three hundred years, examining the development of the scientific and social paradigms inflecting consort portraiture and representation, with a view to excavating portrait images' agency at the early modern moment of their conception and making. The consort's liminal position between royal houses, territories, languages and sometimes religion has often been equated with political weakness, but this new book argues that this position endowed the consort with a unique space for innovation in the representation of elite identity. As such, consort imagery drew upon gender as a generative resource of motifs and ideas. Each chapter is informed by new archival research and introduces the reader to little known, yet astonishing works of art. Collectively, they seek to trace a shift in practices of identity formation over time; the transition from an emphasis on rank to an increasingly binary emphasis on gender.

A masterful deciphering of an extraordinary art object, illuminating some of the biggest questions of the eighteenth century

Seine Duosonaten für Streich- oder Blasinstrumente hingegen erfreuen sich nach wie vor - gerade im Musikunterricht - großer Beliebtheit. Mit den Sechs Sonaten op. 14 erweitert der G. Henle Verlag sein technisch leichtes Streicher-Kammermusik-Repertoire, lädt aber ebenso die Fagottisten zur Begegnung mit dieser charmanten französischen Barockmusik ein. Die Henle-Urtextausgabe folgt der 1726 in Paris erschienenen Erstausgabe und präsentiert das Werk in Partitur, wodurch beispielsweise ein spontaner Wechsel der Stimmen bei der Wiederholung der einzelnen Satzabschnitte möglich ist. Zudem bieten wir eine zweite Spielpartitur, die Thomas Klein mit Fingersatz und Strichbezeichnung versehen hat, so dass auch weniger fortgeschrittene Cellisten sofort loslegen können!

Dass es sich bei den überaus beliebten Cembalokonzerten Bachs vermutlich um Bachs eigene Bearbeitungen von Solokonzerten handelt, die er ursprünglich für Violine oder ein Holzblasinstrument komponiert hatte, hört man ihnen nun wirklich nicht an. In vielen Fällen kennen wir die Original-Vorlage nicht, wohl aber beim D-dur-Konzert BWV 1054. Es entstand um 1738 als Bearbeitung des Violinkonzerts E-dur BWV 1042. Und wieder einmal gelingt es Bach, aus der Violinstimme einen brillanten, idiomatischen Tasten-Satz zu zaubern. Nicht nur deswegen, sondern vor allem aufgrund seiner beschwingt-heiteren Ecksätze gehört BWV 1054 zu den Highlights in Bachs reichem OEuvre. Der Klavierauszug enthält die Solostimme sowie einen Klavierauszug, der von Johannes Umbreit gut spielbar für die Praxis eingerichtet wurde.

Competition is one of the driving forces of our time - everything can suddenly turn into a challenge or a contest. Art, on the other hand - that is outside the art market - can be seen as a free space in which something genuinely unique emerges. That this construct is a historical exception is revealed by a fresh look at the early modern period: Here, the principle of competition was thought to be decisive for artistic work. What is more, the competitive habitus of imitation, competition and surpassing - imitatio, aemulatio and superatio - was supposed to bring about cultural progress as such. Even Leonardo knew that "good envy" spurs high performance. Hence, some of the most famous works of the Renaissance and Baroque periods emerged from the competitive battles that artists in early modern Europe fought among themselves, as well as with long-dead models from antiquity. This splendid catalogue reveals mutual inspiration and cooperation, but also sheds light on the dark side of competition for prestigious commissions - envy, intrigue, and slander.

The reappraisal of an artist who never managed to escape the shadow of his famous father--until now. Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564-1638) was a Belgian artist who, despite enjoying great success, was forever eclipsed by his renowned father, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-69). During his career, Brueghel the Younger's prodigious output and business acumen popularized the distinctive depiction of Netherlandish peasant life historians recognize today, yet he was constantly deemed a second-rate, derivative painter. Peasants and Proverbs rewrites this narrative by focusing on recent research into Brueghel the Younger's Two Peasants Binding Firewood. These collected writings highlight the emerging understanding of this under-sung artist and savvy entrepreneur who operated his studio to produce and reproduce paintings, and the extent to which his enterprise was motivated by trends in the contemporary art market.

The sublime - that elusive encounter with overwhelming height, power or limits - has been associated with music from the early-modern rise of interest in the Longinian sublime to its saturation of European culture in the later nineteenth century and beyond. This volume offers a historically situated study of the relationship between music, sound and the sublime. Together, the authors distinguish between the different aesthetics of production, representation and effect, while understanding these as often mutually reinforcing approaches. They demonstrate music's strength in playing out the sublime as transfer, transport and transmission of power, allied to the persistent theme of destruction, deaths and endings. The volume opens up two avenues for further research suggested by the adjective 'sonorous': a wider spectrum of sounds heard as sublime, and (especially for those outside musicology) a more multifaceted idea of music as a cultural practice that shares boundaries with other sounding phenomena.
