This anthology consists of academic essays, creative non-fiction, poetry and short stories on race and racism by black women from South Africa and Brazil.

"The favourable reception given by the public to the two previous books, "Mexico and Her People of To-day" and "Guatemala and Her People of Today," induced the writer to continue his studies of the Latin-American countries and people. To this end an extensive trip was made through several of the republics on that great continent to the south of us, and this work is the first result of that journey. Like the previous books it is presented as a study of the country and people from the most reliable authorities, as well as a record of impressions. In its preparation many books have been read and scores of people, Americans, Europeans and Brazilians, have been consulted and interviewed. The author's purpose has been to present this treatise upon a neighbouring republic and study of our fellow Americans from a broad viewpoint, and avoid the narrowness ofsome writings in which everything different or unfamiliar is deemed a fit subject for caustic criticism. The Boundaries of Freedom brings together, for the first time in English, writings on the social and cultural history of Brazilian slavery, emphasizing the centrality of slavery, abolition, and Black subjectivity in the forging of modern Brazil. Nearly five million enslaved Africans were forced to Brazil's shores over four and a half centuries, making slavery integral to every aspect of its colonial and national history, stretching beyond temporal and geographical boundaries. This book introduces English-language readers to a paradigm-shifting renaissance in Brazilian scholarship that has taken place in the past several decades, upending longstanding assumptions on slavery's relation to law, property, sexuality and family; reconceiving understandings of slave economies; and engaging with issues of agency, autonomy, and freedom. These vibrant debates are explored in fifteen essays that place the Brazilian experience in dialogue with the afterlives of slavery worldwide. 1960 wurde in Brasilia die Verwirklichung einer städtebaulichen Vision nach Entwürfen von Lúcio Costa und Oscar Niemeyer gefeiert, gleichzeitig wurde nach Plänen von Le Corbusier die Sektoren-Stadt Chandigarh gebaut. Der Export der Moderne, die Retorten-Stadt, entsprang einer westlichen Planungseuphorie mit utopischen Zügen. In beiden Städten ist die fremde Architektur mit den einheimischen Kulturen in Einklang gekommen und eigenständige Identitäten haben sich gebildet. Das Buchprojekt geht der Frage nach, wie in den beiden Städten die Aneignung der Moderne erfolgt ist, wie die Menschen damit leben und umgehen. Es werden Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede aufgespürt und ein Bild des urbanen Alltags gezeigt. African slaves were brought into Brazil as early as 1530, with abolition in 1888. During those three centuries, Brazil received 4,000,000 Africans, over four times as many as any other American destination. Comparatively speaking, Brazil received 40% of the total number of Africans brought to the Americas, while the US received approximately 10%. Due to this huge influx of Africans, today Brazil's African-descended population is larger than the population of most African countries. Therefore, it is no surprise that Slavery Studies are one of the most consolidated fields in Brazilian historiography. In the last decades, a number of discussions have flourished on issues such as slave agency, slavery and law, slavery and capitalism, slave families, demography of slavery, transatlantic slave trade, abolition etc. In addition to these more consolidated fields, current research has focused on illegal enslavement, global perspectives on slavery and the slave trade, slavery and gender, the engagement of different social groups in the abolitionist movement or Atlantic connections. Taking into consideration these new trends of Brazilian slavery studies, this volume of collected articles gives leading scholars the chance to present their research to a broader academic community. Thus, the interested reader get to know in more detail these current trends in Brazilian historiography on slavery.

Das Buch befasst sich mit der pädagogischen Dimension von Schüler:innengenossenschaften in Südbrasilien. Die Grundhypothese ist, dass durch genossenschaftliche Praxis ein kooperatives Bewusstsein entwickelt werden kann.Der verwendete theoretische Ansatz gründete sich auf die Arbeit als zentraler und erklärender Kategorie für Bildung. Ausgehend von einer Feldforschung mit den Schüler:innen und teilnehmenden Lehrkräften konnte gezeigt werden,dass die kooperative Arbeit eine erzieherische Erfahrung ist und dass die Werte, die in der Form der Genossenschaften aufgebaut werden, Einfluss auf die Veränderung des Verhaltens und damit auf das Bewusstsein derjenigen Schüler:innen haben, die an diesen Aktivitäten teilnehmen.
