I 1999 fandt man blot 700 meter fra toppen af Mount Everest det dybfrosne lig af den legendariske engelske bjergbestiger George Mallory, der forsvandt i 1924. Tre gange forsøgte han at bestige verdens højeste bjerg, tredje gang blev ulykkens gang. Både han og hans klatremakker Andrew Irvine omkom på bjerget. Liget af Irvine er aldrig blevet fundet, heller ikke Mallorys kamera.
