But where did these images originate and what shaped them? Empire of Images explores the development of the Roman visual language of power in the Republic in Iberian Peninsula, the Gallic provinces, and Greece and Macedonia, centering the development of imperial imagery in overseas conquest. Drawing on a range of material evidence, this book argues that Roman imperial imagery developed through prolonged interaction with and adaptation by subjugated peoples. Despite their starring role in Roman imagery, the populations of Rome's provinces continuously reinterpreted and reimagined Roman images of power to navigate their membership in the new imperial community, and in doing so, contributed to the creation of a universal visual language that continues to shape how Rome is understood.

In this highly original book, Obert Bernard Mlambo offers a comparative and critical examination of the relationship between military veterans and land expropriation in the client-army of the first-century BC Roman Republic and veterans of the Zimbabwean liberation war. The study centres on the body of the soldier, the cultural production of images and representations of gender which advance theoretical discussions around war, masculinity and violence. Mlambo employs a transcultural comparative approach based on a persistent factor found in both societies: land expropriation. Often articulated in a framework of patriarchy, land appropriation takes place in the context of war-shaped masculinities.This book fosters a deeper understanding of social processes, adding an important new perspective to the study of military violence, and paying attention to veterans' claims for rewards and compensation. These claims are developed in the context of war and its direct consequences, namely expropriation, confiscation and violence. Land Expropriation in Ancient Rome and Contemporary Zimbabwe contributes to current efforts to decolonise knowledge construction by revealing that a non-Western perspective can broaden our understanding of veterans, war, violence, land and gender in classical culture.

Die Grundthese des Buches ist, dass die meisten unserer Ortsnamen in Wirklichkeit aus der keltischen Sprache kommen. Es gelang denn auch, zahlreiche Namen auf ihre keltischen Bestandteile zurückzuführen und ihre wahre Bedeutung zu entschlüsseln. Im Lexikon finden sich beispielhaft Hunderte Deutungen von Ortsnamen vorwiegend aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Dazu kommen Orte aus Europa und sogar von andern Kontinenten. Die vollkommen neuen Deutungen ermöglichen einen einzigartigen Blick in die Welt und auf die Werte unserer Vorfahren. Besonders spannend: Die über zweihundertfünfzig erstmals hier dargestellten urkeltischen Wörter ermöglichen dem Leser, selbst Ortsnamen zu deuten. Mithilfe dieser urkeltischen Worte werden zwei alte Inschriften neu übersetzt.Die Folgen der Entdeckungen in diesem Buch für die Kenntnis der Kelten und deren Sprachen sowie für die germanischen und indogermanischen Sprachen sind kaum abzuschätzen. Beispielsweise legt die Einfachheit der urkeltischen Worte nahe, dass sie zur indogermanischen Ursprache gehören.

Claudius Claudianus (ca. 370-404 n. Chr.) galt lange vor allem als panegyrischer Chronist des weströmischen Kaiserhofs ab 395 n. Chr. Auch die wohl nach seinem Tod unter dem Titel Carmina minora gesammelten kürzeren Gedichte lassen den Panegyriker Claudian erkennen, zeigen jedoch gleichzeitig einen Dichter, der besonders anhand der Beschreibung von Naturmirabilia weitere Facetten seines poetischen Programms präsentiert. Dieses Programm zeichnet sich einerseits durch eine intensive intratextuelle Bezogenheit aus, die unterschiedliche Aspekte eines ausgeprägten ars-natura-Diskurses aufzeigt, in dessen Rahmen die Erzeugnisse einer natura artifex vom poeta artifex Claudian ekphrastisch höchst raffiniert inszeniert werden. Andererseits verdeutlichen intertextuelle Bezüge zu zahlreichen griechischen und lateinischen Dichtern die Einbindung einer Tradition, die ergänzt durch typische Gestaltungsmittel spätantiker Dichtung die programmatische Bedeutung der concordia discors offenbart. Genannte Bestandteile des poetischen Programms Claudians betrachtet die vorliegende Publikation anhand detaillierter Textanalysen und leistet so einen wertvollen Beitrag zur weiteren philologischen Erschließung der Carmina minora.

Why did ancient autocrats patronise theatre? How could ancient theatre - rightly supposed to be an artform that developed and flourished under democracy - serve their needs? Plato claimed that poets of tragic drama "drag states into tyranny and democracy". The word order is very deliberate: he goes on to say that tragic poets are honoured "especially by the tyrants, and secondly by the democracies" (Republic 568c). For more than forty years scholars have explored the political, ideological, structural and economic links between democracy and theatre in ancient Greece. By contrast, the links between autocracy and theatre are virtually ignored, despite the fact that for the first 200 years of theatre's existence more than a third of all theatre-states were autocratic. For the next 600 years, theatre flourished almost exclusively under autocratic regimes. The volume brings together experts in ancient theatre to undertake the first systematic study of the patterns of use made of the theatre by tyrants, regents, kings and emperors. Theatre and Autocracy in the Ancient World is the first comprehensive study of the historical circumstances and means by which autocrats turned a medium of mass communication into an instrument of mass control.

Der vorliegende Band legt dar, dass diese Statuetten im Gegensatz dazu eine durchaus positive Bedeutung besaßen.

Immer wieder kommt es in Homers Ilias zu impliziten Interaktionen zwischen dem Erzähler und seinen Figuren. Die vorliegende Monographie untersucht diese Interaktionen als ,Metalepsen' (Überschreitungen zwischen Erzählebenen), welche dem Epos eine immanente Dialogizität verleihen. An zahlreichen Einzelanalysen wird gezeigt, wie Metalepsen maßgeblich den homerischen Erzählstil prägen und wie sie den Deutungsspielraum ganzer Passagen erweitern. Dabei wird deutlich, dass metaleptische Interaktivität eine scheinbare Unmittelbarkeit und Nähe zwischen dem Erzähler und seinen Figuren (besonders Achill) erzeugt. Auf ganz unterschiedliche Weisen nehmen Erzähler und Figuren in ihren Reden aufeinander Bezug, etwa indem der Erzähler einer Figur widerspricht oder eine Figur ein vom Erzähler verwendetes Bild aufgreift und modifiziert. So erscheinen die homerischen Figuren weniger als Text-Erzeugnisse (als ,Produkte' des Erzählers) denn als reale Personen, mit denen der Erzähler in scheinbar direkten Austausch tritt, ja die er sich geradezu als Gesprächspartner geschaffen hat.

Johannes Overbecks Antike Schriftquellen zur Geschichte der bildenden Künste bei den Griechen sind seit ihrem Erscheinen (Leipzig 1868) ein Standardwerk nicht nur für alle Disziplinen der Altertumswissenschaft, sondern auch für die Kunstgeschichte und affine Kulturwissenschaften. Die korrigierte vollständige Neubearbeitung in fünf Bänden geht über eine Revision und Erweiterung der Zeugnisse weit hinaus und berücksichtigt neben den Ergebnissen der archäologischen Forschung seit Overbeck auch die Veränderung der Kenntnisse und Bedürfnisse der künftigen Benutzer des Handbuchs. Neben der Vervollständigung des Materials werden alle literarischen und epigraphischen Zeugnisse übersetzt, philologisch und archäologisch kommentiert und der Forschungsstand zu den einzelnen Kunstwerken zusammengefasst; zu jedem bedeutenden Künstler findet der Leser am Ende der Testimonien ein Resümee und weiterführende Literatur.
