In turn, it asks how, through this interplay, Pharaonic culture as an epistemic entity is created: an epistemic entity which conserves and transmits even the lives and deaths of ancient people. The Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires are usually studied separately, or else included in broader examinations of the Hellenistic world. This book provides a systematic comparison of the roles of local elites and local populations in the construction, negotiation, and adaptation of political, economic, military and ideological power within these states in formation. The two states, conceived as multi-ethnic empires, are sufficiently similar to make comparisons valid, while the process of comparison highlights and better explains differences. Regions that were successively incorporated into the Ptolemaic and then Seleucid state receive particular attention, and are understood within the broader picture of the ruling strategies of both empires. The book focusses on forms of communication through coins, inscriptions and visual culture; settlement policies and the relationship between local and immigrant populations; and the forms of collaboration with and resistance of local elites against immigrant populations and government institutions.

This book presents a comprehensive corpus of beads and pendants found during excavations undertaken by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago between 1960 and 1968 at the Lower Nubian sites of Qustul, Adindan, Serra East, Dorginarti, Ballana, and Kalabsha and stored in the Oriental Institute Museum. This vast, illustrated catalog organizes the finds first chronologically according to the main periods of Nubian history and then by cultural units, beginning with the A-Group and ending with modern times. The present volume-the first of two-comprises beads from Early Nubian (A-Group, Post-A-Group), Middle Nubian (C-Group, Pan Grave, Kerma, Middle Kingdom), and New Kingdom sites. The discussion of each cultural unit begins with background information and develops into a fascinating story of the most characteristic types that form part of that group's identity, though types and materials often cross chronological and regional borders. The story is also one of jewelry fashions and the wealth and long-distance contacts of Lower Nubia, which lay at the crossroads of ancient routes in this part of the world. More specialized information on bead types, ordered by the materials from which the beads were made, is given in the second section of each cultural category. An outline of the preserved beadwork and an anthropological analysis of the remains of the beads' owners, together with references to parallels known from relevant literature and museum research, are also provided. This volume introduces latest research on the necropolis of ancient Asyut and a broad spectrum of different topics. It opens with a deep insight in the long history of the ancient town of Asyut and its different functions throughout history, followed by a contribution highlighting the connections between the city and the oases of Kharga and Dakhla via the Darb el Arba'in, the ancient caravan route through the Western Desert. Research on the temple of Wepwawet, chief deitiy of Asyut, closes the section on the ancient town itself. Turning to the necropolis on Gebel Asyut al-gharbi, an as yet unpublished tomb of a high official of the late 11th/early 12th Dynasty is presented, followed by contributions on material culture including an in-depth analysis of a statue head found during recent fieldwork, an iconographical study on the depiction of wedjat-eyes on Asyuti coffins of the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom; the detailed analysis of a hitherto unpublished coffin and a study on the "Book of the Two Ways" inscribed on another coffin from Asyut. Objects discussed include wooden models and their correlation with wall decoration, latest finds of pottery offering trays and first results of the examination of Asyuti stone offering tables. New Kingdom and Late Period finds are discussed in an article with new information on ushebtis from the collections of Sayed Bey Khashaba and the Museo Gregoriano in Città del Vaticano, and in a typological analysis of faience chalices with a focus on recent finds of The Asyut Project. The volume closes with a hitherto unpublished copy of spell 72 of the Book of the Dead that is inscribed on the early Ptolemaic mummy cartonnage of Padiamun found during fieldwork and an article that details Christian tomb stelae and the special local Asyuti formulae used for inscribing them.
