This book tells the early life of Samuel Dunche. He was born in the late sixteenth century into a well-respected family who had sat at the heart of Government since the times of Henry VIII. He was the third son and, as such, expected to play a supporting role of the family future. He lived in incredible times. A change of royal dynasty from Tudor to Stuart. Intense poverty and taxation at a time the middle classes began to emerge. The ever-present threat of plague and pestilence that culled swathes of the popula tion. A New World being discovered and the world's most famous playwright, William Shakespeare, at his peak. Conflicting religious beliefs between Catholicism and Protestantism fuelling national paranoia and the rise of extremist Puritanism and the ever-present fear of witches. Disillusion with the monarchy, leading to dissolu tion of the monarchy, regicide and Civil War. Through these times, Samuel survives and thrives despite family opposition and finds himself thrust into the heart of great events, shaping his perspective on what is right and wrong, just and unjust. He experiences torturous loss, becomes uncle to a young Oliver Cromwell and finds a love he could never have imagined. My motivation for this story lies not only in writing about the fascinating times that shaped modern Britain, but in a person al connection with Samuel. The first house he built and lived in with his wife, where he started his family, is called Hall Place in Sparsholt, Oxfordshire. It was built in 1623 and celebrates its quatercentenary this year. I own and live in this house today. 'If the walls could talk, what a story they would tell, ' I often say to myself. I hope to try and tell his story
Sieges dominated the English Civil Wars: one study suggests that for every major battle there were perhaps as many as eight sieges, and probably more than 200 towns, castles, and country homes in England were besieged. However, sieges and fortifications have long been the poor relation in the histories of the period. While up and down the country, numerous siege-sites and fortresses are being studied by historians and archaeologists, so much of this is being done in relative isolation, and unlike the study of battles, seldom has there been an opportunity to bring this research together, to present and compare findings.To provide a forum for experts and the curious alike to share results and to learn from one another was a key driver behind the first ever conference dedicated to the study of fortress warfare during the English Civil Wars. Newark-upon-Trent was besieged three times during the English Civil Wars, and is home to perhaps the best surviving fortifications in the country. It was appropriate, therefore, that the town should host the English Civil War Fortress Symposium in November 2022.The co-hosts of the symposium, the Battlefields Trust, and the Fortress Study Group have both run their own conferences in the past, but this symposium was the first time that these two internationally renowned organizations have come together to stage a joint event. The success of the symposium was a recognition of the standing of both societies, as well as the efforts of the organizers. Coriolan (anglais : Coriolanus) est une tragédie de William Shakespeare, créée en 1607 et publiée pour la première fois en 1623. Elle s'inspire de la vie de Coriolan, figure légendaire des débuts de la république romaine. Elle fait partie d'une série d'oeuvres dont le sujet est tiré de l'histoire romaine comme Le Viol de Lucrèce, Titus Andronicus, Jules César et Antoine et Cléopâtre.Caius Marcius Coriolanus soit Coriolan est une figure de la République romaine archaïque. Il appartient à la gens romaine patricienne des Marcii, descendants d'Ancus Marcius, quatrième roi de Rome.
Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Didaktik - Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 1,3, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Darstellung von Familienbeziehungen im jakobäischen Drama, speziell in Thomas Middletons Komödie "A Chaste Maid in Cheapside" aus dem Jahre 1613 und John Fords Tragödie "'Tis Pity She's a Whore" aus dem Jahre 1633. Die Auswahl der beiden Werke erfolgte dabei nach den Kriterien der Entstehungszeit, nämlich dem Zeitalter Jakobs I. (1603-1625), sowie der Zugehörigkeit zu unterschiedlichen Gattungen des Dramas. Im Rahmen der Arbeit werden diese Dramenformen einführend vorgestellt. In der Arbeit soll der Beweis erbracht werden, dass sich sowohl Thomas Middleton als auch John Ford, unabhängig von der jeweiligen Gattung ihres Dramas, in der Präsentation von Familienbeziehungen an die im Zeitalter Jakobs I. bestehenden familiären Strukturen und Funktionen anlehnen und diese auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise in ihrem Werk reflektieren. Zudem soll deutlich gemacht werden, dass beide Dramatiker diese Darstellung nutzen, um Kritik an den wirtschaftlichen, gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Verhältnissen ihrer Zeit, insbesondere an dem Verfall traditioneller Werte und Normen im Zuge des beginnenden Kapitalismus, zu üben. Folgende Fragen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt: Auf welche Art und Weise erfolgt die Darstellung von Familienbeziehungen in den beiden Dramen? In welchem Maße entspricht diese Präsentation den tatsächlichen familiären Strukturen und Funktionen des Zeitalters Jakobs I.? Welche Intention verfolgen die Dramatiker mit ihrer Darstellung? und: Welche Gattung des Dramas hebt die Intention des Autors besonders hervor?
