An energetic, fast-paced trip through the rapidly changing world of Korean cuisine by the author of Eating Viet Nam.Journalist, world traveler, and avid eater Graham Holliday has sampled some of the most exotic and intriguing cuisines around the globe. On a pilgrimage throughout the whole of South Korea to unearth the real food eaten by locals, Holliday discovers a country of contradictions, a quickly developing society that hasn't decided whether to shed or embrace its culinary roots. Devotees still make and consume classic Korean dishes in traditional settings even as the cuisine modernizes in unexpected ways and the phenomenon of Korean people televising themselves eating (mok-bang) spreads ever more widely.Amid a changing culture that's simultaneously trying to preserve what's best about traditional Korean food while opening itself to a panoply of global influences and balancing new and old, tradition and reinvention, the real and the artificial, Holliday seeks out the most delicious dishes in the most authentic settings?even if he has to prowl in back alleys to find them and convince reluctant restaurant owners that he can handle their unusual flavors. Holliday samples sundae (blood sausage); beef barbecue; bibimbap; Korean black goat; wheat noodles in bottomless, steaming bowls; and the ubiquitous kimchi, discovering the exquisite, the inventive, and, sometimes, the downright strange. Animated by Graham Holliday's warm, engaging voice, Eating Korea is a vibrant tour through one of the world's most fascinating cultures and cuisines.

This book focuses on several specific features characterizing Chinäs economy in the Mao era (1952¿1976), and discusses whether and how they are related to the new economic strategy called ¿reforms and opening-up¿ under Deng Xiaoping¿s leadership with the result of the aftermath of well-known rapid growth. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of the continuity and discontinuity between the Mao and Deng eras. Readers are provided with some important clues for thinking about how Maoist China could have contributed to or alternatively prevented today¿s economic development. The topics addressed here include a brief overview of economic development under Mao, significant differences between Mao and Deng economics, and socialist transformations during the early Mao era. These include collectivization as well as communization and the effects on agricultural productivity; water supply construction drives utilizing a vast amount of rural surplus labor; rural finance; the effects on national savings, and the development of heavy and light industry. Also considered are the effects on the socialist industrialization, rural small-scale industries during the Cultural Revolution and their aftermath, and the realities of social life in a Third-front construction site promoted by Mao¿s military strategy in the 1960s. This book is highly recommended to readers who are interested in contemporary Chinäs economy, particularly to scholars and students. The volume gives new insight into the background or preconditions that made possible historically rare miracles of the Chinese economy after Mao.

This book comprehensively investigates the position of Chinäs working class between the 1980s and 2010s and considers the consequences of economic reforms in historical perspective. It argues the case that, far from the illusion during the Maoist period that a new society had been established where the working classes held greater political and economic autonomy, economic reforms in the post-Mao era have led to the return of traditional Marxist proletariats in China. The book demonstrates how the reforms of Deng Xiaoping have led to increased economic efficiency at the expense of economic equality through an extensive case study of an SOE (state-owned enterprise) in Sichuan Province as well as wider discussions of the emergence of state capitalism on both a micro and macroeconomic level. The book also discusses workers¿ protests during these periods of economic reform to reflect the reformation of class consciousness in post-Mao China, drawing on Marx¿s concept of a transition from äclass-in-itself' to a ¿class-for-itself¿. It will be valuable reading for students and scholars of Chinese economic and social history, as well as political economy, sociology, and politics.

The book provides a general review of the processes of social-economic and population development of the Chinese society from 1949 to 2021, the interactions between the two, and a detailed study of the economic and population policies at different stages of social development. Based on legal documents and policies, plenty of historical facts and personal experiences, the book reveals a vivid representation of what happened in that difficult era, especially how greatly the Chinese people suffered in the strict implementation of the enforced birth control policies, as well as the wounds and scars in their human bodies, traumas and grief deep in their psyche. All those have resulted in serious problems and have a profound impact on China's economic and population development.
After immersing himself for years in the captivating allure of Japan, Jan faces the daunting prospect of returning to Europe. However, he finds himself addicted to the beauty of the Land of the Rising Sun, desperately needing an antidote to his overwhelming attachment. A psychiatrist crafts an experimental therapy for him, aimed at unlocking his ability to thrive away from the places he has grown to adore. In this unique treatment, Jan is joined by Nanako, the captivating Miss of Ibaraki Prefecture. As his guide, her mission is to help Jan detach from his deep-rooted emotions - a task that risks the well-being of those around him. Nanako, with her own hidden complexities, introduces Jan to the lesser-seen facets of Japan, exposing the ugliness that lurks beneath its surface. Her own beauty and mysterious past add layers of challenge to the therapy, leading to unforeseen outcomes. Their journey is a dance of contrasts, weaving through the beauty and darkness of Japan, confronting good and evil, and challenging aesthetic and emotional perceptions. For Jan, even his profound knowledge of Japan is put to the test by Nanako's unpredictable guidance, forcing him to confront his own cynicism and tendency to manipulate others for his objectives. Their travels are accompanied by the ethereal presence of Issa, a renowned Japanese haiku poet known for his iconoclastic views. His enigmatic verses infuse their journey with an intimate and emotionally charged atmosphere, framing their exploration of Japan's other side in a poetic light.
The Unspeakable tells the story of two men, both priests, whose strange and divergent paths collide. Peter Whitmore, an administrator for the Diocese of St. Paul, is asked to investigate and ultimately discredit a priest who, it is rumored, possesses a remarkable power -- the power to heal. The priest in question, Jim Marbury, is no stranger to Whitmore. He is an old friend, a seminary roommate, and a spiritual mentor whom Whitmore has not seen in more than twenty years. But much has changed. Always somewhat unconventional, Marbury is now mute, speaking only in sign language, his voice reportedly stolen by God on a trip that he took through western Pennsylvania. On that same journey, in a snowstorm that nobody can verify, Marbury encountered a terrible car accident and a family who changed his life irrevocably. Marbury gets drawn into a world he did not expect -- a world where the past repeats itself, where the mystical is not in a book but alive and breathing. And now Whitmore, his old friend, has to decide for himself which events are really the hand of God and which are the delusions of Marbury gone mad."Suspenseful... The characters, especially Whitmore, are originally vivid..." --Publishers Weekly.
This series, Fifty-three Pairings of the Tokaido Road, Tokaido gojusan tsui, popularly called Pairs Tokaido or 53 Parallels for the Tokaido Road, was published in 1845-1846. It is a unique cooperation between three artists: Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada and Utagawa Kuniyoshi and five publishers: Ibaya Kyubei, (Ibaya Senzaburo (Dansendo)) and Kojimaya Jubei, Enshuya Matabei, Ebiya Rinnosuke (Kaijudo) and Iseya Ichibei. The special feature of this Pairs Tokaido is the pairing of a print for each station with a legend, a wonderful, dramatic, historic or supranatural story. These stories are told partly by the print theme, partly by accompanying text in a cartouche. Sometimes there is a poem. It is a very enjoyable tour!

Wang Wei has traditionally been considered one of the greatest of Tang dynasty poets, together with Li Bo and Du Fu. This is the first complete translation into English of all of his poems, and also the first substantial translation of a selection of his prose writings. For the first time, readers encountering his work in English translation will get a comprehensive understanding of Wang Wei's range as a poet and prose writer. In spite of the importance of Wang Wei's poetry in the history of Chinese literature, no one has attempted a complete translation of all of his surviving poems; moreover, even though he was known for his skill in composing prose pieces in the recognized genres of his day (especially as a writer of commissioned compositions), very little of his prose has been translated. This translation will enable students with limited or no knowledge of Chinese to get a full sense of Wang Wei's compositional range. Moreover, since Wang Wei was known for being a devout Buddhist, having the complete poetry available in reliable translation as well as all of the prose that is connected to the Buddhist faith will be useful to students of Chinese religion.
Dear readers, I am pleased to present to you, after a longer time of research and preparation, my new book on Japanese craftsmanship. Like the creations within it, this book adheres to the principle of Wabi-Sabi and cannot illuminate all facets and characteristics of this vast realm of Japanese traditions. Nevertheless, it may be suitable to inspire you to further explore aspects of these fascinating art forms. If I succeed in this with you, I would have achieved my goal. Japanese craftsmanship possesses the unique ability to blend artistry and functionality. It spans from the traditional tea ceremony to intricately crafted ceramics, from finely carved woodwork to breathtaking textiles. These traditions are passed down from generation to generation, serving as expressions not only of skill but also of deep cultural and religious significance. Imperfection in them is not seen as failure, as it might be in Western countries, but rather as a path to a rarely attained perfection.A key aspect of Japanese craftsmanship is the reverence for nature and simplicity. Many artisans draw inspiration from nature, whether it be the elegant line of a bonsai tree or the flowing movement of a koi fish. This connection to nature is reflected not only in the motifs but also in the materials used. Wood, bamboo, paper, and silk often form the foundation for these artistic creations. The transmission of craftsmanship occurs in specialized workshops, where masters of their craft pass on their skills to apprentices. These apprenticeships are characterized by dedication, discipline, and a profound respect for the craft. Apprentices not only learn the technical skills but also the philosophy behind each technique. It is this fusion of technique and spirituality that makes Japanese craftsmanship truly unique. One of the most fascinating examples of traditional craftsmanship in Japan is the art of Kintsugi, the repair of ceramics with a mixture of gold or silver lacquer. Instead of hiding the breakages, they are accentuated with precious metals, adding not only an aesthetic element but also conveying a philosophical message - the beauty of repair and the appreciation for the impermanent. In the upcoming chapters, we will delve into the various facets of Japanese craftsmanship, from the intricate Noh masks to the precise artistry of Samurai swords. Join us on a journey through centuries of tradition and innovation as we explore the legacy of Japanese craftsmanship.
Quy Nhon is a secret beach paradise. Smack in the middle of Vietnam's eastern coast, Quy Nhon boasts wide-open soft sand, crystal-blue waters, and super-cute fishing villages nestled into limestone cliffs. All with very few tourists. The swimming, snorkeling, and just-chilling are amazing. So is the eating: fresh fish, squid, shrimp, and oysters, for the price of fast food in the US. We Vietnamese people love escaping to Quy Nhon. It's so relaxing and it's so cheap, even by Vietnamese standards. Foreigners have no idea about this magical place. Now I'm letting you in on the secret. I'll guide you around the town and show you the public city beaches, the quirky cafes, and of course the tons of seafood restaurants. We'll go a bit outside the town to the quieter, more secluded, even more spectacular beaches. There's one beach nestled into a cliff, one with a giant Buddha looking down on it, and another one with bird-egg-like stones. I'll show you a hidden cafe that looks like a treehouse, perched on a mountain top, with spectacular views over the city and the coast. This is the first Quy Nhon guidebook ever published. There isn't even one in Vietnamese. In my previous guidebooks, we explored Saigon and Hanoi. I showed you Da Nang years before it became popular. Now let's discover Quy Nhon. Bring your swim trunks.
