"Redefining the counterculture as a time of Acid Communism, Acid Detroit diverges from most books on the Sixties, which centre on California, to show that Detroit was an unequalled hotbed of radical activism, urban unrest and sonic innovation. Considering Detroit's unique mix of people and cultures and enduring sonic legacies, it covers everything from incendiary garage rock, to European-influenced techno and experimental hip-hop crews, intertwining the artist's lives and works with the city's rise and decline, from its establishment as an industrial powerhouse to the high point of Motor City, into its decline and tentative rebirth. A mind-expanding tour through time and space that explores the lost possibilities, histories and hidden potentials of the city, Acid Detroit reveals a history of resilience and transformation hidden in the shadows of the abandoned factories and warehouses of the Motor City" --

"Tim Hawkins has traveled far and returned to tell us what he saw. His outward journeys find a parallel in his equally exotic inward wanderings, in visionary reveries of the people and places he has loved. In a way these are almost all love poems by a man with a burning passion for existence, fraught though it may be. The intoxicating intersection of inner and outer is where many of them live, mingling the careful observations of the senses with the modifications of memory so that we experience each scene, each character (including his own, about which he is unsparing), from multiple angles and in the completeness of time. Whether he's writing free or formal verse, this approach makes it almost holographic and often quite memorable, as in this brief example, a poem called "What Have I Done?": "No real food or sleep for days- / only doll's head tea in a rusty bucket / brewed with scalding tears.""--
A story about two journeys: one through time and history in the state of Ohio, and the other through the psyche and stages of loss, grief, change, hope, and strength. Part documentary photography and part emotion, author Hillary Kleptach hopes this book will invoke some of the same thoughts, feelings, and vibrations she has experienced visiting these bleak locations. What happened to these places? What may have occurred here that no one knows about, aside from the people who stood to witness the events firsthand? A building with so much history now stands as a final testament to its buried stories. By now, many of the people have been buried, too. What did they experience here? In some ways, these sites are like a mirror, reflecting back parts of one's heart--abandonment, transformation, destruction, and creation. Were these buildings, these vessels, the better version of themselves decades or centuries ago, when they were immaculate, unsoiled, and unscathed? Or have they become something more fascinating and worthy of attention after years of decay, weathering, and warping?
In 1679, the French ship Le Griffon mysteriously vanished. Was it lost in a violent storm or robbed of its valuable cargo of furs and set ablaze? No one knows, but historians are quite certain the ship found its final resting place on the bottom of the Great Lakes. Now after centuries of mystery and misinformation, Steve and Kathie Libert reveal that Le Griffon likely met her final fate among the Huron Islands in Lake Michigan, northeast of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Their research placed her final moments near these islands, precisely where the Liberts discovered a colonial-age shipwreck. Could this be La Salle's Le Griffon?Le Griffon's disappearance became an unsolved mystery for French explorer Robert La Salle, who searched for her whereabouts to no avail. Ironically, if the ship-cursed by local Indian tribes-proves to be Le Griffon, she lays under tribal waters, adding to the mystique of her story. Using primary source documents, the Liberts detail their historical journey of exploration and discovery in solving the first Great Lakes maritime mystery. Many history enthusiasts have patiently waited for this mythical creature to magically raise her eagle head and lioness body from the depths to continue on with her voyage. After nearly 340 years of unanswered questions and more than a dozen unsubstantiated claims of her discovery, Le Griffon can begin to ply the waters - at least in our imaginations.
