The Ballad of the White Horse is one of the last great epic poems in the English language.In the dark times before a unified England, warring tribes roved and sparred for territory across the British Isles. A poetry collection examining masculinity, aggression, and violence. In his fourth poetry collection, Matthew Minicucci examines masculinity and gun violence as he brings to life the grammatical concept of the dual, a number that is neither singular nor plural. Though now lost in English, the concept is present in other languages both extant and ancient. The poems' forms fittingly include the elegy, palinode, and contrapuntal, which is both a single poem and two poems intertwined. They align contemporary moments with key texts from Western literature, including ancient Greek epics, in a way that helps us reconsider the aggression of young men. "The world kills kind boys," Minicucci writes, and "we bury the bodies inside men." Minicucci recategorizes our idea of "West," the Western canon, and the Old West and its bullets, comparing them to modern-day landscapes in Utah, Oregon, Washington, California, and Hawai'i. Whether memorializing a woodworking grandfather or poets Brigit Pegeen Kelly and James Longenbach, Dual notes that loss has a double vision. In Zanzibar, in 2008, George Elliott Clarke began to write his "Canticles," an epic poem treating the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Imperial and colonial conquest, and the resistance to all these evils. That is the subject of Canticles I (MMXVI) and (MMXVII). In Canticles II (MMXIX) and (MMXX), Clarke rewrites significant scriptures from an oral and "African" or "Africadian" perspective. Now, in Canticles III (MMXXII) and (MMXXIII), Clarke shifts focus--from world history and theology -- to the specific history and bios associated with the creation of the African ("Africadian") Baptist Association of Nova Scotia. By so doing, he concludes the most remarkable epic ever essayed in Canadian letters -- an amalgam of Pound and Walcott -- but entirely and inimitably his own.

The duality between Being and thinking can be understood by way of inner meditative contemplation. And furthermore it is a duality that need not be cause of confusion or illusion. It is the Being; the I AM, that thinks. The way ahead needs the revelation of the I AM cognising Itself and assuming responsibility for its thinking to transform outer life from within. But it also requires the revelatory insight into the spiritual nature of the I AM. The way ahead necessatates a spiritual awakening. Such an awakening would resolve the schism between Being and thinking. In my poetic book Poetica Esoterica, it is written; I Am thinker, not thought, doer, not that which is done. Actually it can be also said, I Am Thinker who thinks and Doer that does. The point is that there is no duality here: thoughts flow from the thinker and actions flow from the doer. It is the Being, the I Am, the Consciousness-Soul, the God immanent, that thinks, feeis and acts. What this implies is self-responsibility. I Am responsible for my thoughts and actions. I Am not the victim of externalities regardless of my history, karma and past trauma. The moment I awaken to my inner sovereignty, I have a choice. Here is where the meditative, contemplative, spiritual journey begins. I Am the healer and transformer of my own Being.
