As I did research for this book, it became apparent that extreme consequences are possible when a nation becomes deeply divided. This division occurred in the 1850's and 1860's, and is with the United States again as of 2023. In 1861, civil strife lead to a civil war. President Abraham Lincoln had to deal with a nation at war with itself. This book has unique features. There are links to songs of slaves and soldiers incorporated into the narrative; there is discussion of issues of the present time, which were unresloved by the Civil War; Lincoln's leadership was of profound importance; also discover that:Lincoln got the support of the mass of the white population by representing their interests and attitudes. One thousand women joined the Union army and fought in battles alongside the men.Two hundred thousand recently freed black slaves fought as Union soldiers and sailors.Native Americans (Indians) were involved in the war, including General Eli Parker, an Iroquois SenecaAnti-slavery foreign troops from Italy, Scotland and Germany fought with the Union army.Russia was the only major European power to support Lincoln's war against slavery. England and France aided the Confederacy.I teach United States History in a special and unique way. Accompanying myself on guitar, I sing songs of the time period we are discussing. I've included many of these songs in this book.
"Dan Butterfield played a pivotal role during the Civil War--led troops in the field at the brigade, division, and corps level, wrote the 1862 Army field manual, composed "Taps," and served as the chief of staff for Joe Hooker in the Army of the Potomac. Butterfield was also controversial, not well-liked, and tainted by politics. Award-winning author James S. Pula unspools fact from fiction to offer the first detailed and long overdue treatment of the man and the officer"--
"The Atlanta Campaign in 1864 was second only to Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign in Virginia for scope and drama. This multi-volume study of the campaign for Atlanta breaks new ground and promises to be this generation's definitive study of one of the most important and fascinating confrontations of the entire Civil War"--
"The fall and early winter of 1861 was a hotbed of activity that culminated in the December combat at Dranesville. A host of characters and commands that would become household names cut their teeth during these months. Though soon eclipsed by larger and bloodier battles, Dranesville remained a defining moment for many of its participants--soldiers and civilians alike--for the rest of their lives"--
"The loss of Robert E. Lee's Special Orders No. 191 is one of the Civil War's enduring mysteries. This meticulous study presents a bold new interpretation of the evidence surrounding the orders' creation, distribution, and loss outside Frederick, Maryland, in September 1862. Rossino provides new information pinpointing where the orders were lost and offers a provocative hypothesis about who may have lost them, and the impact on Confederate operations. This is the Confederate companion to The Tale Untwisted by Gene M. Thorp and Alexander Rossino, which told the story from the Union perspective"--
First hand accounts provide an example of what the Northern communities faced during the Civil War effort.
