For 5.500 år siden tæmmede botaifolket hesten.

The originals have been digitally processed and supplemented by the author to provide the best possible reading experience.
The cultural and historical significance of the Laurion as well as its exceptional position as one of the major sources of silver, lead and other mineral resources in the eastern Mediterranean since the Early Bronze Age have repeatedly been invoked in numerous publications. In a field such as mining archaeology, scientific progress can only be achieved through interdisciplinary cooperation. With its abundant material remains, the Laurion offers particularly good research conditions for the collaboration between the natural sciences and the humanities. Based on funding by the German Research Foundation [DFG], an international conference on "Ari and the Laurion form Prehistoric to Modern Times" was held in Bochum in November 2019. Speakers form Europe and form Australia presented new research results on Laurion in 23 lectures. Eleven of these are published here, while other contributions are especially written for this volume. Topics address the history of exploration from prehistoric to modern times as well as the entire range of research activities in the Laurion, starting from geoscience and material sciences to history, field archaeology and archaeometallurgy.

This research concerns establishment of sources of pottery manufacture and relationships between Early Iron Working (EIW) sites of Kwale (Mombasa), Limbo, Mafia and Kwale (Kisiju). It is founded on previous research focus of using pottery physical attributes such as decorative motifs and linguistic evidence to explain origin and spread of Bantu speaking communities. This focus inadequately provided evidence to explain why pottery with similar typological attributes could be found in different regions. Additionally, the Kwale (Mombasa) site has not been adequately studied since 1966. To address these problems, excavation was conducted at Kwale (Mombasa) site and comparative data were acquired from previous researches by Felix Chami at Limbo, Mafia and Kwale (Kisiju) sites. This study employed petrological analysis to investigate relationships of pottery and clay temper from similar EIW sites so as to trace source of pottery manufacture. Results of this study reveal that pottery fabric attributes from each of the examined sites correlate fabric attributes from each of the examined sites correlate with local clay suggesting local production of pottery.

"Earth and Stone: China's Epic Barrier" stands as a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of one of humanity's most monumental achievements-the Great Wall of China. This ambitious undertaking delves into the historical, cultural, and technological aspects of the Great Wall, unearthing its origins, evolution, and enduring impact on China and the world. Spanning millennia, the Great Wall's narrative intertwines with China's socio-political, economic, and military developments, creating a complex tapestry of significance far beyond its physical representation as a defensive rampart. The journey commences with an exploration of the early stages of the Great Wall's construction during the tumultuous Warring States period (7th-3rd century BCE). Here, the seeds of the Wall's purpose are sown-a means to protect individual states from external threats. Meticulous research and analysis of historical records lead us through the annals of time, revealing how different dynasties, notably the Qin, Han, and Ming, contributed to the Wall's expansion, reinforcement, and preservation. A panoramic view of the construction methods and materials employed emerges, ranging from the use of compacted earth and sturdy stone to wood and fired brick."Earth and Stone" transcends the physical dimensions of the Great Wall to unveil its symbolic and cultural significance. The Wall emerges not merely as a functional structure but also as a canvas for artistic expression. It bore witness to the imprints of poets, scholars, and warriors who etched their thoughts, poems, and calligraphy onto its surface. By delving into the interplay between cultural history and the Great Wall, this study brings to light its role as a muse for literature, a subject for visual arts, and a repository of folklore, adding layers of depth to its place in China's collective memory. The exploration also extends to the geopolitical realm, examining how the Great Wall influenced China's defense and diplomatic strategies. It elucidates instances where the Wall acted as a barrier against Mongol invasions and facilitated border control and trade management along the vast network of the Silk Road. This perspective unlocks an understanding of how the Wall's significance evolved over time-from a tool of military defense to a complex emblem shaping foreign relations and policy dynamics.Simultaneously, "Earth and Stone" evaluates the impact of the Great Wall on local communities, shedding light on the unsung heroes-the laborers-who brought this colossal project to life. Drawing from archaeological findings and historical records, the study reconstructs the lives of these laborers, soldiers, and ordinary civilians who inhabited and interacted with the Wall. This inquiry uncovers socio-economic intricacies, working conditions, and the socio-cultural dynamics that unfolded in the vicinity of the Wall, providing a window into the convergence of human endeavor, labor, and monumental construction.

This book has re-visited two distinctive patterns, namely pottery and millet, the movement of both of which conflict with conventional narratives concerning prehistoric trans-Eurasian exchange. The significance of this lies beyond the simple matter of chronology, but rests on the relationship between the movement of agricultural resources and of other items of material culture. Studies on early west¿east interaction have attracted researchers from various disciplines, such as archaeology, history, Asian studies, art history, etc. Pursuing an archaeological approach, the book re-examines two of the earliest evidences of trans-Eurasian cultural exchange. The book is intended for researchers who are interested in prehistory, archaeobotany, pottery studies and comparative studies of early civilizations.
