This historical novel tells the story of a twelve-year-old Chumash boy and his family who become captives in a California Spanish mission sometime more than 200 years ago. This is historical fiction based entirely on historical fact that reveals the devastating impact the missions had on California Native peoples. Written for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, the story ends on a hopeful note as a small group of Native children are able to escape their captors and begin a journey to join other Native escapees in a remote mountain village. As mandated by the California Department of Education, every 4th grader is taught the ';Mission Unit,' which perpetuates the ';idyllic mission myth' that glorifies the priests, denigrates California Indians and fails to mention that Indians were actually treated as slaves held captive by a Spanish colonial institution. The manuscript has been reviewed and approved by the Director of the Santa Ynez Chumash Culture Department and a member of the California American Indian Education Oversight Committee. It has the endorsement of a fourth grade teacher in California who has shared the story with her class and a local librarian who is excited about sharing the story with elementary age children through the library. After conferences at Goseck [2004] and Heldenberg [2005], the time was ripe for another workshop combining recent research with fresh ideas. This took place online in 2022 as part of the research project Constructed Knowledge of Free University Berlin. The present volume contains 21 out of 30 papers presented there. Topics include new hypotheses and research on rondels in general, an overview of the FUB research project, site studies based on excavation, survey, in situ pXRF, experimental reconstruction, and Bayesian modelling at places such as Velm, Hornsburg I, Eggendorf am Walde, Niederleis, Rechnitz, Schletz, Heldenberg [A], Hradec Králové [CZ], Goseck, Kyhna, Quedlinburg I, Ippesheim, Hopferstadt, and in North Rhine-Westphalia [D]. This work presents an introduction to the study of pre-colonial funerary practices within the scope of archaeological research. Aimed at students and society in general, the book aims to make public how mortuary practices can be approached with a view to reconstructing the ways of life of the groups that occupied the national territory in prehistoric times. In clear and accessible language, the book provides a brief history on the study of pre-colonial mortuary rituals and practices, highlighting some theoretical considerations and proposing a methodological model for analysis. Considering that the large number of cemetery sites recorded in Brazil contrasts with the lack of archaeological research on this theme, this book also aims to encourage future studies on this vast and rich field of investigation, still very little explored in Brazilian archaeology.

Felsen der Oberlausitz stehen seit über 400 Jahren im Verdacht in prähistorischer Zeit heidnische Opferaltäre und Göttertempel für einen Sonnenkult gewesen zu sein.2007 wurde ein kalenderastronomisches Sonnenbeobachtungsphänomen entdeckt. Die Sonne strahlt zu den Terminen der Sonnenwenden und Tagundnachtgleichen durch reguliert anmutende Sichtöffnungen verschiedener dieser Felsen.Zur Erforschung des Phänomens gründete die Sternwarte Bruno-H.-Bürgel Sohland Spree eine Fachgruppe Archäoastronomie und rief das Forschungsprojekt Götterhand ins Leben.Felsen, welche das Sonnenbeobachtungsphänomen aufweisen, werden als Sonnenheiligtümer der Oberlausitz angesprochen.Eines dieser mutmaßlichen Sonnenheiligtümer ist der Teufelsstein von Pließkowitz/Kleinbautzen. Seit 1903 rätselt die Wissenschaft, ob es sich bei ihm nicht viel mehr um ein steinzeitliches Großsteinmonument handelt, mit einer Torkonstruktion, wie man sie von Stonehenge in England kennt.Die Fachgruppe Archäoastronomie hat diese Überlegungen zusammen mit der astronomischen Funktion untersucht.
