This is a Modern Greek grammar book from beginner to advanced level. It is one of a kind, as it includes theory sections explained in English plus numerous exercises. Originally published in December 2022 and updated in August 2024, it explains the language as it is used today (with contemporary phrases and with the modern accentuation system). Each chapter includes a brief theory section, followed by many exercises to make sure the student has mastered each topic. Answers to all exercises are also provided, which is particularly helpful for students who are practicing without the help of an instructor. In the first sections we cover reading and writing: double vowels, double consonants, placement of the stress mark, etc. Then we move on to articles, pronouns, nouns in the three genders, conjugation of nouns, adjectives and their conjugation, adjective-noun agreement, adverbs, comparative and superlative of adjectives and adverbs, among other topics.>The book is not an exhaustive grammar reference and is not meant to replace grammar books but rather puts the emphasis on practice. Explanations are given in English and instructions for the exercises are given in English and Greek. The meaning of numerous Greek words is given (right under each word), to facilitate learning and to help beginners -who may still have limited vocabulary- to complete the exercises without having to constantly refer to a dictionary.
The corpus of Palaiologan romances consists of about a dozen works of imaginative fiction from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries which narrate the trials and tribulations of aristocratic young lovers. This volume brings together leading scholars of Byzantine literature to examine the corpus afresh and aims to be the definitive work on the subject, suitable for scholars and students of all levels. It offers interdisciplinary and transnational approaches which demonstrate the aesthetic and cultural value of these works in their own right and their centrality to the medieval and early modern Greek, European and Mediterranean literary traditions. From a historical perspective, the volume also emphasizes how the romances represent a turning point in the history of Greek letters: they are a repository of both ancient and medieval oral poetic and novelistic traditions and yet are often considered the earliest works of Modern Greek literature.
The 10th-century treatise on the military provinces (the 'themes') of the medieval East Roman (Byzantine) empire is one of the most enigmatic of the works ascribed to theemperor Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos.
This volume examines and outlines a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) model of discourse analysis and its relationship to New Testament Greek. The book reflects upon how SFL has grown as a field since it was first introduced to New Testament Greek studies by Stanley E. Porter in the 1980s. Porter and Matthew Brook O'Donnell first introduce basic concepts regarding discourse analysis and the major approaches towards it within New Testament studies. They then provide a detailed exploration of discourse analysis in terms of the textual metafunction, beginning with an introduction to the architecture of language within SFL, before exploring several individual elements within it. By focusing upon these individual components - in particular, theme and information structure, markedness and prominence, and coherence and cohesive harmony - Porter and O'Donnell introduce and exemplify the major resources of the textual metafunction.
"Revises customary views about the relationship between "medicine," "cosmology," and "philosophy" in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE through a fresh analysis of the works of the cosmological doctors, such as On Breaths, On Flesh, and On Regimen"--

"The period of the first Ancient Greek peoples, the Mycenaean civilization, from the 1700s BCE, through to the Greek Dark Ages and the rise of Classical Antiquity more than a thousand years later is one of profound significance for Western modes of thought. The first cities, works of art, the stories of Olympic Gods and heroic warriors in classical literature find their origins in the traditions of this era."--
This is the first book to provide a practical toolkit on teaching Latin and ancient Greek in primary education. "A ground-breaking analysis of the origins of Western linguistic thought, exploring how ancient Greek and Mesopotamian thinkers saw the relationship between human symbols and the universe. By examining neglected primary sources, the book offers fresh reconstructions of how these thinkers conceived the interrelation of language and reality"--
"A Greek declamation was an 'imaginary speech': a fictitious speech composed for a rhetorical scenario set in classical Greece. Although such speeches began as rhetorical exercises, under the high Roman empire they developed into a full-blown prestigious genre in their own right. This first monograph on Greek declamation for nearly forty years re-evaluates a genre that was central to Greek imperial literature and to ancient and modern notions of the 'Second Sophistic'. Rejecting traditional conceptions of the genre as 'nostalgic', this book considers the significance of Greek declamation's reenactment of classical history for its own times and integrates the genre into the wider history of the period. It shows through extended readings how the genre came to constitute a powerful and subtle instrument of identity formation and social interaction, and a site for free thinking on issues of major contemporary importance such as imperialism and inter-polis relations"--
