Longlisted for the 2023 DUBLIN Literary Award"[Grand Hotel Europa] calls to mind Nabokov, Tom Wolfe, Baudrillard, Umberto Eco, Wes Anderson . . . [a novel of] incorrigible high spirits." -Rand Richards Cooper, The New York Times Book ReviewA sweeping, atmospheric novel about European identity, centered on a hotel that encapsulates the continent's manifold contradictions. The love of my life lives in my past. Despite the alliteration it's a terrible line to have to write. I don't want to come to the conclusion, just as the hotel I'm staying in and the continent it is named after, that the best times are behind me and that I've little more to expect of the future than living off my past.A writer takes up residence in the stately but decaying Grand Hotel Europa in order to contemplate where things went wrong with Clio-an art historian and the love of his life. His recollections take him back to when they first met in Genoa, his wanton visits to her in Venice, and their dulcet trips to Malta, Palmaria, Portovenere, and the Cinque Terre in their thrilling search for the last painting made by Caravaggio. Meanwhile, he becomes fascinated by the mysteries of the Grand Hotel Europa and the memorably eccentric characters who inhabit it, all of whom seem to hail from a halcyon era. All the while, globalization is laying claim to even this place, where a sense of lost glory hangs sulkily in the air.Grand Hotel Europa is Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer's masterly novel of the old continent, where there's so much history that there hardly seems space left for a future. Cinematic, lyrical, and brimming with humor, this is a novel about the European condition, which like the staff and residents of the Grand Hotel Europa may have already seen its best days.
Dick van Gameren, a partner with the renowned Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo, has engaged in housing design for the past twenty-five years through his work as an architect as well as in his research and teaching at TU Delft's Global Housing Study Center. In this book, he presents around forty of his own projects in this field, through concise texts and photographs with explanatory captions as well as plans and drawings. The projects are grouped to illustrate seven specific aspects of housing design: Streets and Squares, Courtyards and Patios, Gardens, Halls, the Fireplace, Walls, and Roofs. Together, they constitute a multifaceted catalog of housing typologies. In four supplementary essays, van Gameren explores evolutions in residential architecture in the Netherlands. He positions his own concepts in the context of these developments and expands on what he considers the key factors of good housing design. He places particular focus on affordable housing, a pressing issue in so many countries and metropolitan areas around the world. Dutch Dwellings is an inspiring read for anyone involved in housing design today.
Towards Territorial Transition presents new spatial strategies, concepts, and approaches for shaping large-scale and transnational developments in architecture and urban design towards decarbonization and ecological transition. The contributions investigate interactions between ecological and resource-related systems and landscapes. They explore potential solutions to address and deal with the dramatic threats posed by climate change, and with the social crisis that may emerge from them. The book introduces six basic terms of territorial transition-Territory, Scale, Transition, Resource, Platform, and Uncertainty-and visualizes them with spatial strategies elaborated at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture Versailles and at Graz University of Technology. Moreover, it presents a selection of transnational projects of territorial transition, such as Luxembourg in Transition (Luxembourg / France), Grand Genève (Switzerland / France) and Top Noordrand (Belgium / Netherlands).

The present work presents a vision of the development of the independence process in the region currently occupied by the State of Cojedes. This is -until now- the most complete work that exists on the independence process in the jurisdiction of Villa de San Carlos, region that currently comprises the State of Cojedes, since until now only partial investigations had been presented, without an integral vision of the region as the one offered in this study, clarifying at the same time that this is subject to discussion and enrichment with later works. Here we also outline the antecedents of the independence deed in the main cities that conform today the State of Cojedes, as well as the existing territorial divisions in terms of cities, towns and villages for 1810 and the successive years of the Independence, highlighting didactically the differences established by the ecclesiastical power and the civil power; likewise the warlike actions happened between 1810 and 1821 are outlined, discriminated in battles, combats, skirmishes and sieges.
The story I tell is drawn from the well of personal journals written during my time in war as a civilian ... as background for recall and reflection. Journaling is a habit I started in Catholic seminary, and unwittingly gives witness to my story. What is written herein is a series of essays that interweaves a tapestry of memories that crisscross my time in South Vietnam 1967-1969. The American War as the Vietnamese named it. How do participatory museum projects with forced migrants impact both the museum and the participants? What happens during these projects and what is left of them afterwards? Based on interviews with museum practitioners, facilitators and project participants, Susanne Boersma brings together unique insights into museum work with forced migrants. Her study of participatory projects in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK reveals museums' limiting infrastructures, the shortcomings of their ethical frameworks, and the problems of addressing forced migrants as 'communities'. Outlining the diverging objectives, experiences and outcomes of participatory projects, she suggests how these might be united in practice.

The fall of communism in Romania in December 1989 inaugurated a new period in the country¿s history that would impact on public memory as well as on historiography. Romaniäs history had to be rewritten or reinterpreted unveiling the abuses, the persecution and the crimes of the communist regime during the last 45 years. Several publications and mass media products took over the task to re-establish for the Romanian people the historical truth. However, many years after the regime change from 1990 little was done to come to terms with the period that preceded the Communist domination marked by the pro-fascist dictatorship of Marshal Antonescu, a period during which the country¿s leadership was responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands Romanian and Ukrainian Jews. Refusing to make a distinction between individuals and the nation as a whole, the ideologists of the Romanian national-communism preferred to keep the silence over the ¿forgotten Holocaust¿ as if had never happened. This book is a contribution of comming to terms with Romania's recent history presenting the impact of the politics of the XXth century on private life in this part of the world.
