Frans Hals is one of the most important portrait painters of all time. Like Rembrandt, the famous Dutch Baroque master's striking portraits of the bourgeoisie and social outsiders are distinguished by their extraordinary vividness and accurate depiction. His sketch-like paintings, executed with bold brushstrokes, had a decisive influence on modernist painting. This comprehensive publication coincides with the first major survey exhibition of Hals' oeuvre in more than thirty years. FRANS HALS (1582/84-1666) was born in Antwerp, the son of a cloth merchant. In 1610 he was accepted into the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. Hals created hundreds of genre paintings, individual, and group portraits and enjoyed great public prestige. Despite his fame during his lifetime, it was not until the nineteenth century that he was enthusiastically rediscovered by the Impressionists and Realists.

Skole for skandinavisk litteratur. Gæstelærer ved University of California, Berkeley 1987-1988. Anmelder ved Information 1970-1995. Modtager af Georg Brandes Prisen 1983, af ALT for Damernes Kvindepris 1984. Medlem af Statens Humanistiske Forskningsråd 1988-1993. Tildelt livsvarig kunstnerydelse af Statens Kunstfond (2010). Har bl.a. skrevet "Det moderne gennembruds kvinder" (1983, disputats), "Liv og lyst" (1987), "Dekonstruktion - 90'ernes litteraturteori" (1990), "Dansk litteratur. Middelalder" (1998), "Sanselig senmiddelalder" (2010), "Litterær reformation" (2016). Søster til Ulla Dahlerup og Drude Dahlerup.

New edition of the popular introduction to Paul Gauguin, part of the Flame Tree Masterpieces of Art seriesGauguin began his artistic life as an Impressionist in Paris, but yearning for a wider world view he experimented with decorative art and bright colours to create what some have termed Symbolism. He painted briefly with Van Gogh but was strongly drawn by the “otherness” of the South Pacific to which he travelled frequently, and finally settled far away from his origins and early influences to create a unique and intensely personal body of work. The new edition of this beautiful new book revels in the scenes of Tahiti, the sunlit bodies, the shapes and styles of the South Pacific each of which have secured him a unique place in the history of art.

"A stunning exploration of the vital links between Claude Monet's Impressionism and the time technologies that helped define modernity in the nineteenth century. Monet's Minutes is a revelatory account charting the relationship between the works of Claude Monet (1840-1926)-founder of French Impressionism and one of the world's best-known painters-and the modern experience of time. Andrâe Dombrowski illuminates Monet's celebration of instantaneity in the context of the late nineteenth-century time technologies that underwrote it. Monet's version of Impressionism demonstrated an acute awareness of the particularly modern pressures of time, but until now scholars have not examined the histories and technologies of time and timekeeping that informed Impressionism's major stylistic shifts. Arguing that the fascination with instantaneity rejected the dulling cultures of newly routinized and standardized time, Monet's Minutes traces the evolution of Monet's art to what were then seismic shifts in the shape of time itself. In each chapter, Dombrowski focuses on the connections between a set of Monet's works and a specific technology or experience of time, while providing the voices of period critics responding to Impressionism. Grounded in exceptional research and analyses, this book offers new interpretations of key works by Monet and a fresh perspective on late nineteenth-century art, society, and modern temporality"--

Discover how painters such as Van Gogh, Mondrian, and Jacoba van Heemskerck drew on the legacy of Dutch landscapes and realism to put their own spin on the Impressionist movement. Impressionism may have originated in France, but artists in late 19th- and early 20th-century Netherlands quickly made it their own. The genre's vibrant colors and focus on light and atmosphere were a perfect complement to the country's groundbreaking traditions of landscape painting and realism. This exhibition catalog brings together hundreds of works by nearly forty artists including Johan Barthold Jongkind, Vincent van Gogh, Jacoba van Heemskerck, and Piet Mondrian. It traces the birth of the Hague School, whose practitioners captured the changing moods of light in the coastline's vast, grey skies. And it explores the Amsterdam Impressionists, whose cityscapes offered realistic images of modern life. Alongside vibrant reproductions of masterworks, a series of lively essays explore a diverse array of topics, including Dutch landscape painting within an international context; Dutch artist settlements and communities; and iconography in Dutch impressionism.

Accompanies the Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism at the Dulwich Picture Gallery 31 March - 10 September 2023Berthe Morisot: Impressionism and the 18th Centuryis the first major UK exhibition of the renowned Impressionist since 1950. In partnership with the Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, it will bring together around 30 of Morisot's most important works from international collections, many never seen before in the UK, to reveal the artist as a trailblazer of the movement as well as uncovering a previously untold connection between her work and 18th century culture, with around 20 works for comparison.A founding member of the Impressionist group, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was known for her swiftly painted glimpses of contemporary life and intimate domestic scenes. She featured prominently in the Impressionist exhibitions and defied social norms to become one of the movement's most influential figures. Berthe Morisot: Impressionism and the 18th Century will draw on new research and previously unpublished archival material from the Musée Marmottan Monet to trace the roots of her inspiration, revealing the ways in which Morisot engaged with 18th century art and culture, while also highlighting the originality of her artistic vision, which ultimately set her apart from her predecessors.Highlights will include Eugène Manet on the Isle of Wight (1875), painted while Morisot was on honeymoon in England, and her striking Self-Portrait (1885), which will appear alongside Jean-Honoré Fragonard's Young Woman (c.1769) from Dulwich Picture Gallery's collection. Apollo revealing his divinity to the shepherdess Issé, after François Boucher (1892), In the Apple Tree (1890) and Julie Manet with her Greyhound Laerte (1893), are among nine paintings on loan from the Musée Marmottan Monet, many receiving their first ever showing in the UK.
"This is a travel adventure set in the legendary French city of Arles. Founded in Roman times, Arles is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in scenic Provence in the south of France. For the last hundred years it has been an important destination for the countless tourists who arrive in pursuit of the great Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who famously spent an intense fourteen months in Arles, painting the most brilliant works of his career (all those sunflowers and quivering landscapes), squabbling with fellow artist Paul Gauguin, guzzling absinthe, and famously cutting off the lobe of his ear, which landed him in the local hospital in the throes of a mental breakdown. Linda Seidel has visited Arles many times, initially to study the splendid medieval church of Saint-Trophime, but eventually to follow in the long shadow of Vincent's passage, which he recorded in numerous paintings and drawings. Together, they make a pair of charming guides, sharing with us the wonders of Arles's Roman amphitheater, which seats 20,000 people and has been in continuous use for two thousand years; the Alyscamps, a Roman cemetery featuring paths still lined with ancient sarcophagi; the Church of St. Trophime with its astonishing Romanesque portal; the Arles Hospital, which has been converted into a museum about Vincent; the cafes and bars where he hung out; new buildings such as the tower by Frank Gehry; and of course the Provenðcal countryside with its dazzling wildflowers and quaint farms. Ultimately, this is Vincent's story, told as never before through an engagement with the mysterious, culturally rich town that transformed his life and, indeed, the entire course of modern art"--
