le Rouge et le Noir est un roman d'initiation de Stendhal, où le héros, le jeune Julien Sorel, fils de charpentier, qui tente de s'élever dans la société, devra franchir de nombreux obstacles. Passionné par Napoléon, il rêve d'une grande destinée en revêtant l'habit de soldat (rouge). Le titre du roman indique l'opposition présente dans le texte : le rouge comme la couleur des habits de l'armée et le noir pour les prêtres.Le roman est divisé en deux parties : la première partie retrace le parcours de Julien Sorel en province, dans une petite ville nommée Verrières, et plus précisément son entrée chez les de Rênal. Sa passion pour Mme de Rênal, de même que son séjour dans un séminaire. La seconde partie porte sur la vie du héros à Paris, comme secrétaire du marquis de La Mole, et la passion qu'il a avec sa fille, Mathilde.
