Naomi Mitchison (1897-1999) wrote, during her long life, in more or less every genre one could name: fiction, essays, drama, children's books, and poetry. Much of her writing has been brought back into print, but no sustained effort has so far been made to collect and consider her poetry. This volume is a first step towards that.Only two poetry collections were published during Mitchison's lifetime: The Laburnum Branch in 1926 and The Cleansing of the Knife in 1978. Many more poems are to be found in her volumes of short stories, since it was her custom to intersperse stories with poems, which sometimes expand on the themes of the stories and often have a bearing on her experiences and emotions at the time.

Binaries or dichotomies are very simplistic ways of looking at concepts or issues in life. Dichotomies only exist when we consider things at a very fundamental level. Yet, when we explore a grey area in between, we do not find a third static state. Instead, we are faced with unstable chaos. Winner of the Literary Titan 2024 Gold Award."¿Each poem here might also be read as a progressive invocation-a rite of sacred absurdity and a blasphemous widdershins ritual that bathes the Celebrant in the very light that will drown them, bringing their bodies past a transcendent veil of shadow, freeing them in their final successive breaths. In this way, Chaos is a book of "ruptured reflections"; further still, these poems are a tome dedicated to a fragile eternity, the nameless gods of a 'Primordial Precedent'. " - Shea Bilé
