Conceived as an archive, the book brings together the experiences of Frequencies, a global participatory project initiated by multimedia artist Oscar Murillo in 2013. Part of the artist's multimedia practice, Frequencies addresses the notion of community through the lens of its making. For over a decade, it has involved members of Murillo's family, studio team and collaborators, visiting schools around the globe, fixing raw canvas onto classroom desks, and inviting the students to freely mark, write and draw on them for a period of approximately six months. Murillo has collected an archive of canvases, which he presented in various interactive exhibitions. OSCAR MURILLO (*1986, La Paila, Colombia) has developed a multi-faceted and ambitious practice that spans painting, collaborative projects, video, sound and installation. He received his MFA from the Royal College of Art in 2012 and was one of four artists to collectively win the prestigious Turner Prize in 2019.
"Ancient Art and Ritual" is a book written by Jane Ellen Harrison, a distinguished classical scholar and linguist. The book was first published in 1913 and is considered one of Harrison's significant contributions to the field of classical studies. Jane Ellen Harrison (1850-1928) was known for her work in the areas of classical archaeology, mythology, and anthropology. In "Ancient Art and Ritual," Harrison explores the relationship between ancient art and religious or ritualistic practices in various cultures. She draws connections between the symbolism found in ancient art and the rituals performed by different societies. The book delves into the idea that art and ritual are interconnected expressions of the human experience, with each influencing and reflecting the other.Harrison's approach is interdisciplinary, combining elements of archaeology, anthropology, and classical studies. She examines a wide range of ancient cultures, including those of Greece, Rome, Egypt, and the Near East, to uncover common themes and symbols in art and religious practices. One of the key themes in the book is the concept of "ritual survival," where Harrison explores how ancient rituals and symbolism persist in art even as societies undergo cultural and religious changes. She proposes that studying art can provide valuable insights into the spiritual and cultural beliefs of ancient civilizations.Overall, "Ancient Art and Ritual" is known for its innovative and thought-provoking analysis of the connections between art and religious practices in the ancient world. It has had a lasting impact on the study of classical art and mythology and remains a significant work in the field of classical scholarship.
This insightful work explains what art represents and how to judge a good piece of art. With discussion on art, philosophy, history, and psychology, Hippolyte Taine developed the notion of understanding art through the historical circumstances during its creation. In addition, Taine talks about literature and the qualities that make a text a gem. The book comprises an application of the experimental method to art, in the same way, it is done in science. The author precisely describes art by social influences and other causes. Humanity at different periods and locations, climate, and other conditions furnish the truths on which the theory rests. It is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding a piece of art, examining it by details and the whole picture. Hippolyte Adolphe Taine was a French philosopher, critic and historian. He was the chief theoretical influence of French naturalism, a major proponent of sociological positivism and one of the first practitioners of historicist criticism. Literary historicism as a critical movement has been said to originate with him. Taine is particularly remembered for his three-pronged approach to the contextual study of a work of art, based on the aspects of what he called "race, milieu, and moment".

In MAINTENANT 18, contemporary dada writers and artists from around the world redistribute a wealth of new ideas, to shape public opinion using the theme of PLUTOCRAZY. "Timely and relevant." -Tribe LA Magazine. "Proof that dada is not dead." -MADJAN Magazine (Serbia)Creativity is the currency here and the amount has no limit. In nearly 250 pages of full color art and incisive writing, MAINTENANT 18 separates Merch and State by forging a non-monetary vision which exposes strategies to achieve socio-political and economic equality and serves against the military-industrialist complex linking warfare with capitalism, shining a light through every crack for "we the people." Features the work of artist and writers from around the world, including cover art by Molly Crabapple. A fascinating collection of contemporary dada art and writing from around the world that proves dada continues to be a pertinent artistic response to the madness of modern society. As author Richard Loranger (Mammal) notes: "Three Rooms Press, which has been producing Maintenant since 2008, calls this a journal, but it's more like a series of pageants, or more to the point, anti-pageants, glorious protest parades that fill the streets with punk and jazz and graffiti and wry ire, pausing before the grandstand only to burn flags, fling mirrors, and enact human realness. And what better time for it!"The Maintenant series, established in 2008, explores themes of politics, humanity, philosophy, and current concerns from an antiwar, anarchic (and often eye-opening) perspective. Past issues include work by artists Mark Kostabi, Raymond Pettibon, Joel Hubaut, Heide Hatry, Avelino de Araujo, Pawel Kuczynski, Inas Al-Soqi, Giovanni Fontana, Nicole Eisenmann, Syporca Whandal, and Kazunori Murakami; past writers have included Gerard Malanga, Charles Plymell, Andrei Codrescu, Harry E. Northup, Malik Crumpler, Maw Shein Win, and more, with a strong contingent of artist-writers from the world of punk rock, including Thurston Moore, Exene Cervenka, Alice Bag, Mike Watt, Bibbe Hanson and more. How do we recognise an artist's book when it becomes an expanded practice? Is the same method of sourcing, research and display of materials used in books and collections alike? Can the space where the book is made and exhibited be considered an artist's museum? These were Francisco Varela initial questions when he saw the Blackchapel bookwork atmsdm house-studio-gallery in London. The first section of the essay explores the "expanded" characteristics of the artist's book, probing whetherthis notion is extensible to the activity of space production practiced by paula roush at her house-studio-gallery, an activity which is unique to and inseparable from her live-work method. These artistic methodologies are clarifiedwithin an interdisciplinary framework that includes the concepts of "autoethnography," "space-time sequence"and "contemporaneity."The second section explores the notion of "dispositif," with the intention to reveal the multiple structuring elementsof a live-work practice here called "immersive."The third section analyses the "museographic" process inherent to the space, a practice associated to the house-studio-gallery.This live-work-curation method is identified in relation to various museological frameworks that are exercised in that space.

Victor 2.0. is the second book in the Victor series. Here is the Prologue to give you a taste. 'Victor sits on his couch, staring at his two-hundred-inch mini-LED TV. He is surfing the web as he hears a knock at the door. Victor's butler Hiam, who has also been his forever friend since birth, answers the door. Standing there with twenty of her girlfriends is Kelsey. They are all dressed casually, holding champagne and ready to celebrate. Kelsey barges through the door with all her friends and gathers around Victor. She says, "Congratulations on your number one album! It's only been an hour, and it's already topped the charts worldwide."She then pops open a bottle of champagne. At that moment, Victor's lovely wife walks in from the other room. She is the most beautiful woman in the entire world. Everyone calls her Lady, a nickname Victor gave her a long time ago.Lady says, "Hi, Kelsey, how are you doing?"Kelsey replies, "We're here to celebrate."Lady says, "For sure, let's do it."Victor says, "Lady, will you please bring out that special bottle of Dom, the one with your name on it that we've been saving for this occasion?"Lady says, "Coming right up."Victor then grabs his custom Pyrex pipe, heats it up with his matching custom torch, and blows a huge cloud.' I hope you enjoyed this sample of the book. Victor loves his beautiful Lady. Now that he has found her, the world is going to be a better place.

In Dunwich, a remote village in Massachusetts, lost in the depths of an inhospitable countryside with dark valleys invaded by brambles, the old stories of witches are still alive and strange subterranean noises resound at times under the hills surmounted by mysterious circles of stones. On an isolated farm in the region, Lavinia Whateley, a simple-minded albino, gives birth to a child, Wilbur, whose father is unknown. Old Whateley, Lavinia's father, raises Wilbur while arousing the suspicion of the neighboring inhabitants who are frightened by the speed of growth of the child and his repulsive facies. Rumors of witchcraft have always swirled about Old Whateley, and after his death, Wilbur, upon reaching adulthood, became determined to increase the unholy knowledge imparted to him. To reach his goal, he goes to the Miskatonic University of Arkham to borrow the copy of the sinister Necronomicon in their possession. Professor Armitage, understanding the malevolent intentions of his visitor, refuses to accede to his request; thus a captivating illustrated version is born.Always fascinated by the world of HP Lovecraft, François Baranger, an illustrator recognized worldwide for his talents as a concept artist for cinema and video games, has tackled the "cyclopean" task of putting his main stories into images.
Combining a broad overview of Jean-Jacques Lebel's coming-of-age among Surrealists and his rupture with the movement, Laurel Jean Fredrickson focuses on two landmark happenings in this book: the first, "Funeral of the Thing of Tinguely" (1960), and the most scandalous, "120 Minutes dedicated to the Divine Marquis" (1966). This study illustrates the development and significance of French happenings in relation to cultural and political changes of the 1960s.Research in Lebel's archives, and others like the Archives nationale d'outre-mer are indispensable in the telling of this extraordinary historical and theoretical narrative. It illuminates sensitive, often veiled dimensions of postwar French society, from torture during the Algerian War, to government censorship, to the sexual politics of nudity in art. This volume shows how Lebel synthesized the lessons of Dada and surrealism and 1960s experimentalism, electrified by political radicalism, to participate in shaping the erotics and forms of revolution in May 1968.
An artist's inventory of offhand and everyday anti-Asian languageIn this slim artist's book, Utrecht-based artist Seulbin Roh (born 1996), of Asian descent, collects a variety of discriminatory comments and questions she has heard and overheard in the course of daily life--casually racist or sexist language that Asian people endure constantly in Europe and the US. "I can't imagine myself being in a relationship with an Asian man"; "is it really tight down there?"; "I like Korean food better than Chinese food. You know what food means here, right?"--these and many more offhand remarks are compiled by Roh and laid bare across the pages of this book to starkly present their banality and their racism. The book reads in English starting from the front and Korean from the back.
Dutch conceptual artist Anouk Kruithof (born 1981) reimagines photography and sculpture to create liberating and disturbing artworks that explore the interactions between people, nature and technology. This is the artist's first comprehensive retrospective, surveying two decades of her multimedia practice.
