A witty and ingenious parody of American consumer goods--from a wristband that measures social success to shoes that help you dietPippa Garner's (born 1942) Better Living Catalog, originally published in 1982, takes the form of a mail-order catalog featuring clever, whimsical inventions that parody consumer goods and America's obsession with ingenuity, efficiency, leisure and comfort. These works, which were made as prototypes and photographed for the publication, include the Reactiononometer, a portable wristband that instantly measures social success; the Digital Diet Loafers, which display the wearer's weight with every step; and other items promising financial solvency (the controlled cash flow Autowallet) or mess-free companionship (the Pet-a-Vision TV console). The Better Living Catalog was a pop hit when it was published, earning Garner spots on nighttime TV talk shows and attention from magazines such as Vogue and Rolling Stone. The works still resonate today, finding their analogue in many consumer products and--in the case of the High Heel Skates--even appearing unattributed in the runway collection of a major fashion brand. Around the time that the Better Living Catalog was published, Garner began her gender transition, which she has characterized as an artistic project with conceptual parallels to the altered consumer goods she has continued to create since the 1970s. This previously rare gem of an artist's book is one of Garner's few works to become widely available.
An artist's inventory of offhand and everyday anti-Asian languageIn this slim artist's book, Utrecht-based artist Seulbin Roh (born 1996), of Asian descent, collects a variety of discriminatory comments and questions she has heard and overheard in the course of daily life--casually racist or sexist language that Asian people endure constantly in Europe and the US. "I can't imagine myself being in a relationship with an Asian man"; "is it really tight down there?"; "I like Korean food better than Chinese food. You know what food means here, right?"--these and many more offhand remarks are compiled by Roh and laid bare across the pages of this book to starkly present their banality and their racism. The book reads in English starting from the front and Korean from the back.
Dutch conceptual artist Anouk Kruithof (born 1981) reimagines photography and sculpture to create liberating and disturbing artworks that explore the interactions between people, nature and technology. This is the artist's first comprehensive retrospective, surveying two decades of her multimedia practice.
An ingenious and collectible book-as-poster documenting Prince's half-century of image appropriationFor aficionados of Richard Prince (born 1949) and of the possibilities of the book form, this unique exhibition catalog is an exclusive three-in-one kind of publication. Designed in the dimensions of a 12-by-12-inch LP record and housed in a plastic sleeve, when unfolded it transforms into a two-sided (one English, one Danish) poster with a richly illustrated collage of works by Prince from across his career (including his famous "rephotographs"), plus two in-depth texts on Prince's oeuvre by the curators Nancy Spector and Anders Kold.A defining figure of the Pictures Generation, Prince is famed for his radical acts of appropriation, which have taken many turns across the course of his five-decade career. His visual world, encapsulated in this innovatively designed volume, offers a remarkably consistent portrait of late 20th-century America.

Silent Parties is an artwork based on eight historic legal cases in which animals have been put on trial or robots have been at the centre of legal disputes. benandsebastian's recently completed public commission for the Court of Aarhus focuses on mute, nonhuman participants in legal history, spanning from a 15th century case involving a cock being tried for allegedly laying an egg, to a contemporary case examining whether life-size, singing and dancing robots at an American restaurant chain should be considered live performers. benandsebastian have collaborated with specialists working within the fields of law, robotics, ethics, anthropology and cognitive science, addressing ways in which nonhumans have been silent, but also revelatory, parties in legal history.BEN CLEMENT (*1981, Oxford) and SEBASTIAN DE LA COUR (*1980, Copenhagen) have been working together as the duo benandsebastian since 2006. Their artworks, such as Department of Voids at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa and at Den Frie in Copenhagen, discover potential within gaps in institutional representation.

I. Am. Sorry. From Jack Bender, lead director / executive producer of the TV series Lost along with many other acclaimed shows, comes I Am Sorry—an unexpected and wholly unique take on what it means to be human. Through the lens of his original paintings, paired with intimate and occasionally satirical atonements, this out-of-the-box book is provocative, raw, and universally relatable. Bender’s art illuminates people of all ages and from all walks of life, proposing that perhaps our biggest mistakes are our greatest opportunities to heal. I Am Sorry is a perfect coffee table book and an extraordinary gift.
Volume 2 of Theater(s) and Public Sphere in a Global and Digital Society continues the exploration of the fundamental contribution that artistic and cultural forms bring to social dynamics and how these can consolidate cohabitation and create meaningfulness, in addition to fulfilling economic and regulatory needs. As symbolic forms of collective social practices, artistic and cultural forms weave together the meaning of territories, contexts, and peoples, and also of the generations who traverse them. This volume examines several case studies in the relationship between cultural forms and society. These forms of meaning interact with the social imaginary, mediate marginalization, transform barriers into bridges, and are indispensable tools for any social coexistence and its continuous rethinking in everyday life. The various epistemic approaches present here refer to sociology, theatre studies, cultural studies, psychology, economy of culture, and social statistics which observe theatre as a social phenomenon.Contributors are: Maria Shevstova, Ilaria Riccioni, Roberta Paltrinieri, Gerhard Glüher, Raimondo Guarino, Mariselda Tessarolo, Raffaele Federici, Marco Serino, Maria Grazia Turri, Elena Olesina, Elena Polyudova, Marisol Facuse, Vincenzo Del Gaudio, Laura Gemini, Stefano Brilli, Jessica Camargo Molano, Annalisa Cicerchia, Simona Staffieri and Giulia Cavrini.

Multimedia paintings and drawings from Pendleton's acclaimed Untitled (WE ARE NOT) and Black Dada series and moreThe catalog for Adam Pendleton's (born 1984) 2022 exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, his first solo show in Canada, These Things We've Done Together features new monumental paintings from the Untitled (WE ARE NOT) series, which combine language and abstraction to erase distinctions between writing, drawing, painting and photography. Similar abstract gestures are reimagined and reexamined in a group of works on Mylar that combine layers of gestures and geometric shapes. In a third set of works--the latest iterations of Pendleton's Black Dada drawings--he incorporates images of sprays, splatters and drips of paint from his studio walls. Supplementing these artworks is an interview between Pendleton and curator Mary-Dailey Desmarais, as well as a portfolio of 73 studio photos documenting traces of the physical and mental activity that drives his painting process.
A witty, touching and delightful exploration of holes from the author of The VolumeA handsomely designed picture-book for children and adults, The Hole Book explores the many meanings, associations and forms of holes in a delightful narrative of discovery. The book's narrator is an explorer full of questions and curiosity: "Some holes I dug myself. I poked my finger into slices of bread, sheets of paper, and the sand of beaches all over the world." When they grow up they become an explorer of holes, visiting caves, grottos, mineshafts, springs and cavities, making maps of their adventures. Failing to find any literature on the topic, they decided to write their own book celebrating holes.Author Luis Camnitzer is a celebrated artist known for art that deconstructs accepted frameworks and exposes systems of power. In his first children's book, The Volume (2021), he created a beautiful book about space and spatiality. Here he continues to provoke wonder with appeal to people of all ages.Luis Camnitzer (born 1937) is a German-born Uruguayan artist, curator, art critic and academic who was at the forefront of 1960s Conceptual art.
Building on his interest in evolution, philosophy and society, in his project A Gift From Him Maximilian Prüfer (*1986) explores the destruction of natural habitats to make way for agriculture in China. To this end, Prüfer took two trips to the Szechuan Province, where the fruit trees need to be pollinated by hand due to insect deaths caused by the increased use of pesticides. These developments are attributable to Mao's campaign to "Destroy the Four Olds", which entailed the killing of around two billion sparrows in order to restore the natural equilibrium. Prüfer documented the entire manual pollination process in photos, collected items and films which make for an ambivalent exploration of the cultural evolution of humankind.

"Negative Shape - The Defining Attribute" takes what starts out as an artistic concept and expands and explodes its application in a wide area of experiences and relationships. Negative shape explores the BETWEEN. Negative space is quantitative. It tells about how far, how long, and how much. "Negative Shape" explores what we do WHILE we move closer; what we do AS we close the gap between now and next. Proximity is the negative shape that describes expectation and anticipation; wishing and hoping. Christine Archer explains that recognizing how we can use the negative space to evaluate what has happened and prepare for what comes next makes it a real and tangible part of our experience. It's not just "wait time". By seeing it as "shape" we can make it a valuable tool in our understanding that planning, waiting, and creative process are essential components of how we perceive and understand who we are and what we can become. Decision-making, evaluation, and judgement occur outside the event; in the negative "shape" that is the BETWEEN. Soundly grounded in artistic theory, this book is also a deeply personal anecdotal narrative of one person's experience with "Negative Shape" - IN the "Negative Shape".
The 15-year history of the production of a "German scotch" Black Whisky. YKSIHW KCALB recounts the 15-year history of the production of a "German scotch" Black Whisky, made by Dexter Sinister together with Stahlemühle, a distillery set up by ex-publisher Christoph Keller. The story is told in reverse, starting with the delivery of 342 bottles to Berlin in 2022, and ending with an interview with Christoph for the journal Dot Dot Dot in 2007, during which the idea began to germinate. A summary of the project is accompanied by photographs taken at the time, interspersed with five previously published texts (an essay, three conversations, and a statement of intent) written along the way.
A facsimile of the GALA Committee's mock auction catalog for an artistic intervention into the props and plots of Melrose PlaceOriginally published in a limited run in 1998, Primetime Contemporary Art documented In the Name of the Place, a radical two-year intervention by a group of artists, initiated by Mel Chin and known as the GALA Committee, on the primetime television show Melrose Place. This extremely rare artist's book is reproduced for the first time as a facsimile edition. The artists comprising the GALA Committee worked with the producers of Melrose Place to develop a series of political works that were used as props and plot devices across two seasons of the show, providing surreptitious commentary on reproductive rights, HIV/AIDS, the Gulf War, domestic terrorism, corporate malfeasance and substance abuse. Some of these topics were banned by the FCC at the time, and the group's works allowed for the artists and the show to create political commentary that went unnoticed by censors. The artworks they produced were exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art in 1997 and then sold at an auction at Sotheby's to support several charities. Primetime Contemporary Art was created by Mel Chin and Helen Nagge as a mock auction catalog documenting the artwork made for the show and the conceptual framework of the GALA Committee.
Beautiful artist's book about Tin Drum's MR installation, Medusa. A meditation on emergent technologies, nature and architecture amidst the climate crisis with contributions from celebrated writers, academics and thinkers. The mixed reality Medusa installation began with the questions: is there even such a thing as non-physical architecture? What is the function of architecture without physical form? Directed by Yoyo Munk and produced by Tin Drum, it headlined the 2021 London Design Festival at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Yoyo Munk's first book is an exploration into Medusa's themes, reflecting on our changing relationship with architecture within the context of rapidly advancing technology and ongoing mass extinction. Featuring original artwork by Tin Drum, Medusa is a timely and moving artist's book about climate grief. Medusa includes fascinating conversations between Munk and Sou Fujimoto, the renowned architect and Medusa collaborator, James Bridle, author of Ways of Being; Veronica Strang, cultural anthropologist; and Seirian Sumner, author of Endless Forms: The Secret World of Wasps. A dazzling poetic contribution from Octavia Bright, author of This Ragged Grace: A Memoir of Recovery and Renewal is interspersed throughout the book. Medusa is an art object to be treasured, employing multiple inks, foils, papers and processes.
