An eye-opening account of life inside North Korea-a closed world of increasing global importance-hailed as a "tour de force of meticulous reporting" (The New York Review of Books) NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST In this landmark addition to the literature of totalitarianism, award-winning journalist Barbara Demick follows the lives of six North Korean citizens over fifteen years-a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung, the rise to power of his son Kim Jong-il (the father of Kim Jong-un), and a devastating famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Demick brings to life what it means to be living under the most repressive regime today-an Orwellian world that is by choice not connected to the Internet, where displays of affection are punished, informants are rewarded, and an offhand remark can send a person to the gulag for life. She takes us deep inside the country, beyond the reach of government censors, and through meticulous and sensitive reporting we see her subjects fall in love, raise families, nurture ambitions, and struggle for survival. One by one, we witness their profound, life-altering disillusionment with the government and their realization that, rather than providing them with lives of abundance, their country has betrayed them.Praise for Nothing to Envy"Provocative . . . offers extensive evidence of the author's deep knowledge of this country while keeping its sights firmly on individual stories and human details."-The New York Times "Deeply moving . . . The personal stories are related with novelistic detail."-The Wall Street Journal "A tour de force of meticulous reporting."-The New York Review of Books "Excellent . . . humanizes a downtrodden, long-suffering people whose individual lives, hopes and dreams are so little known abroad."-San Francisco Chronicle "The narrow boundaries of our knowledge have expanded radically with the publication of Nothing to Envy. . . . Elegantly structured and written, [it] is a groundbreaking work of literary nonfiction."-John Delury, Slate "At times a page-turner, at others an intimate study in totalitarian psychology."-The Philadelphia Inquirer

"This study of Japanese "forest reclamation" in Korea during the period of Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) holds the notion of conservation up for scrutiny, examining the roots of Japanese practices and ideas about the Korean landscape as well as the consequences and aftermath of the Japanese approach to "greenification" in Korea. The Japanese program for natural resource management included change in how woodland ownership rights were controlled at both the national and village level as well as efforts to change how Koreans cooked and heated their homes and to inculcate "forest love thought" among the Korean people, and culminated with an extreme increase in extraction during the Second World War. This project offers a compelling environmental approach to Korean history but also expands environmental thinking about Japan into colonized lands and contributes to broader conversations about colonial forestry globally"--

"The father's revenge begins after losing his daughter to a sexual crime."「피해자」(The Victim) is a Korean-style crime novel that has received rave reviews from Korean readers. And it's a story about the pain, anger, and despair of victims of violent crimes."[Exclusive Report] Serial killings occur throughout Seoul. All victims are identified as male with past sexual offenses. Police are investigating the murders as hate crimes targeting sex offenders."If such an article were reported today, what kind of reaction would people show? Would they mourn their deaths, or would they mock and rejoice in the notion that those who died got what they deserved? Seeing the praise and support poured out for a YouTuber who recently disclosed the identity of a rape and attempted murder suspect in Korea, it seems that the average person has little interest in the rights of criminals. However, on the other hand, there is a significant number of people who argue that even the rights of these criminals should be protected. But can the scholars and wise men, who argue for the protection of the rights of criminals who have annihilated the rights of their victims, maintain the same argument if they or their family members become victims of violent crimes? Could they still say the same if their own family were murdered, sexually assaulted, or tormented? In a civilized society based on the rule of law, private sanctions (such as revenge or retaliation) by victims against criminals are treated as criminal acts themselves. In Korea, even a victim pushed to the brink of life-threatening danger and defending themselves with their fists can fail to be recognized as acting in self-defense and instead be punished for mutual assault, which has become a subject of social controversy. Furthermore, if a victim publicly declares, 'I have been victimized by so-and-so, ' they can be prosecuted for defaming the criminal's honor. The Korean judicial system excessively protects the rights of criminals, to the extent that police cannot subdue a knife-wielding criminal with a gun but must plead, 'Please, put down the knife.'「피해자」(The Victim) is a work that provokes much thought about the rights of victims, the rights of criminals, and private retribution. Starting with the protagonist's monologue, 'Can I really kill people?' the story introduces a subject never before explored in Korean literature-the serial killings of sex offenders. The protagonist loses his only daughter and wife to a sexual crime. Subsequently, he falls into a state of despair and reclusion. He even contemplates suicide. However, he changes his mind and decides to embark on a path of vengeance. He then proceeds to serially kill sex offenders.「피해자」(The Victim) was written in simple and easy sentences. There are no scenes that stimulate the reader's peripheral nerves, such as suffocating suspense, thrill, and shocking twist, but large and small dramatic elements such as events, conflicts between characters, and inner conflicts appear every chapter. Therefore, I keep turning the page because I am curious about the next content. The artist's storytelling skills, which deal with the speed of storytelling through adjusting the length of sentences, paragraphs, and chapters, are also shown. In addition, careful descriptions of the spatial background, the appearance, behavior, and psychology of the characters add to the literary fun.

    183,95 kr.

Internationalism in Practice is a timely exploration of Claudia Jones' tireless advocacy for international, anti-imperialist, and anti-war solidarity during the pivotal, tumultuous years of the early 1950s. This new scholarly collection from Iskra Books unveils Jones' enduring legacy and continued relevance through her original writings, blending sharp theoretical critique, an approachable and accessible wit, and a poignant focus on the unique exploitations experienced by women of historically oppressed ethnicities in the United States."American mothers" of all ethnic and cultural groups, Jones wrote, must "emulate the peace struggles of their anti-fascist sisters worldwide to end the bestial Korean war." This impassioned plea resonates across time, inviting modern readers to reflect on the enduring necessity for a united, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural, anti-imperialist front in a world where hostilities against the peoples of the Global South increase by the day. With excellent new contributions from Gerald Horne, Denise Lynn, Tionne Parris, and Betsy Yoon, as well as a classic piece of lesser known writing from Kim Il Sung, Internationalism in Practice bridges past and present-a testament to Claudia Jones' fearless dedication to justice, her unyielding stance against imperialist aggressions both abroad and at home, and her foundational advocacy for revolutionary intersectionality and peace. Internationalism in Practice is an indispensable resource, offering profound insights into the past and present struggles for organizers, workers, educators, and students alike.

It's a clever book ... [Im Seong-sun] offers readers his razor-sharp observations on consumer capitalism and what it means to feel anonymous' M. W. Craven -------------------Sometimes work can be murder...The Consultant is very good at his job. He creates simple, elegant, effective solutions for... restructuring. Nothing obvious or messy. Certainly nothing anyone would ever suspect as murder. The 'natural deaths' he plans have always gone well: a medicine replaced here, a mechanism jammed there. His performance reviews are excellent. And it's not as though he knows these people. Until his next 'customer' turns out to be someone he not only knows but cares about, and for the first time, he begins to question the role he plays in the vast, anonymous Company. And as he slowly starts to understand the real scope of their work, he realises just how easy it would be for the Company to arrange one more perfect murder... But how far will he go to escape The Company? And how far will they go to stop him? The electrifying novel from award-winning Korean thriller-writer Im Seong-sun - now in English for the first time - combines the tension of the best crime fiction with searing social criticism to present a searing take-down of global corporate life.

"Contrasting South Korea's historical situation to that in which Europe, the United States, and other developing countries industrialized, Yong-Chool Ha considers how a country can progress economically while relying on traditional social structures that usually fragment political and economic vitality. Instead of seeing neofamilism as a hindrance to growth or as a propagandistic tool, Ha demonstrates that the familial system was critical to Korea's economic transformation"--

  • af Sung-woo Kim
    363,95 kr.

The easiest way to learn about Korea's Buddhist culture is to visit the temples where the traditional practice of asceticism is still carried on today. People no longer live in other examples of traditional architecture, such as palaces and Confucian schools and academies; but in temples the monks and nuns eat, sleep and live in the traditional way, wearing traditional robes. Of all the countries in East Asia that share Buddhist culture, only in Korea is the traditional practice of asceticism strongly maintained. This book aims to discuss the part architecture plays in this traditional temple culture. While temple life and the practice of asceticism are integral to each other, this books attempts to isolate the architecture as a physical entity. Though several books taking a similar approach have been published in Korea, this one has been written with foreign readers in mind. Author: Prof. Kim Sung-woo was born in Seoul in 1950. After graduating from the department of architecture at Yonsei University he went to the United States where he received his master's degree in urban design from the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in Architecture and art history at the University of Michigan, writing his dissertation on Korean Buddhist architecture. Since returning to Korea he has served as a professor at Yonsei University, mainly lecturing on architectural history and theory. Prof. Kim has published many papers on the subject of architectural history and theory as well as the research report Seongju Hangae Maeul (Hangae Village, Seongju), and the books Songgwangsa (Songgwangsa Temple), Hanguk Geonchuksa (History of Korean Architecture, co-author) and Wonya, the Korean translation of a Chinese book on landscape architecture. Prof. Kim's research is focused on theorizing the spirit of the traditional architecture of Korea and other Asian countries form the perspective of cultural philosophy and thereby contributing to the future development of architecture.
