Der elsässische Dichter Jakob Balde (1604-1668), der in Ingolstadt in den Jesuitenorden eintrat und nach Aufenthalten in Landsberg, München und Innsbruck Hofprediger am Münchner Hof wurde, gilt vielen Forscher/-innen als der bedeutendste deutsche neulateinische Dichter. Er schuf während dieser Zeit und weiterer Stationen (Landshut, Amberg, Neuburg) ein weitverzweigtes Werk (Lyrik, Hymnus, medizinische und weltliche Satire, Elegie, Drama, Tragödie). Die 30 Beiträge, von denen 11 erstmals veröffentlicht werden, untersuchen Werke aus allen Schaffensperioden und vermitteln das Bild eines gelehrten und zugleich feinsinnigen Dichters, dem es gelingt, ein modernes Weltbild mit Hilfe antiker Strukturen zu vermitteln. Die Texte werden jeweils übersetzt und interpretiert, um die Welt des stets originell diskutierenden Autors zu erhellen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt der Rezeption Baldes, insofern zwei bisher nicht beachtete Zeugnisse vorgestellt werden: Die Parodie der Expeditio polemico-poëtica (1664) durch den Altdofer Gelehrten Magnus Daniel Omeis ( De Castello Ineptae Eloquentiae ab Oratoribus et Historicis veteribus ac novis expugnato , 1677) und das Festspiel Cithara Jacobi Baldei , das die Freiburger Universität 1769 aufführte.
