This book explores the reconstruction after the 2015 Gorkha Nepal earthquake, on the basis of the author's first-hand experience that has been validated with empirical evidence. Unlike other advocacy and academic literature, the book takes readers close to the ground where the activities took place. This book describes Nepal's efforts to rebuild private housing from the preparatory to the concluding stages, and the obstacles faced and overcome along the way. It assesses the consequences of the policy level decisions and also examines the relevance, utility and future use of damage assessment surveys that were carried out in the country. In addition, lessons from the housing grant payment through the banking system, impending reasons for housing non-compliance to building standards, experimentation with resilient resettlements and unresolved issue of urban regeneration have been also delved in. The ground realities revealed that the aid architecture requires further carving out. The last three chapters have attempted to capture the macro level picture of the reconstruction and recovery endeavors: contribution to national economy, structural resilience and comparative overview of Nepal's delivery in global context. As an intimately involved professional with the 2015 Nepal Earthquake, Dr Shrestha is the authority from whom a holistic understanding can be attained regarding the response of Nepal's state and society to the Earthquake. His study will have ramification at national and global scale in handling with inescapable natural calamities.                                                                                            Kanak M. This book explores the development and implementation of the Clay Embodiment Research Method (CERM) with one of the most stigmatized, oppressed, and marginalized groups of women in Nepal: sex-trafficked women. It argues for the use of a feminist approach to such research given the prevailing patriarchal norms, cultural sensitivity of reproductive health, stigmatization of sex trafficking, and low literacy of the women involved. Beginning with an exploration of the author's relationship with Nepal and the women who guide the study, and the realization that a more accessible research approach was needed than the techniques otherwise commonly used, it discusses the use of clay and photography as ideal entry points to engaging with the women in the research and creating this ethical methodology for self-empowerment. Not only does the volume highlight extraordinary insights offered by the women involved in this study through the application of CERM, but also the recognition that its use requires expertise that can deal with the potential elicitation of trauma. The book makes the case for further study on improving the method's use in research, education, and therapy involving low-literate, stigmatized, oppressed, and marginalized populations, particularly where cultural sensitivity is an important consideration.A Feminist Approach to Sensitive Research is suitable for students, scholars, and researchers in Gender Studies, Sociology, Health Studies, Anthropology, and Asian Studies.

Explores the ways in which affect, colonial histories and militarism organise global security workforces within private military and security companies This book locates its analysis with Gurkhas: a group of militarised men from Nepal with over 200-years of military experience with the British and Indian armies and the Singaporean police, who now participate as security contractors in global markets. These men are celebrated in British popular culture for their heroic martial attributes and their broader military service to the United Kingdom. However, less well known, is the fact that many Gurkhas (located in Nepal) and their families are drawn into these markets under often exploitative relations. Drawing upon over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork with unprecedented access to these security communities throughout Nepal and in Afghanistan, the book's motivating questions are: how is security made through these market relations and how is this security experienced by Gurkhas and their families? Amanda Chisholm is Senior Lecturer in the School of Security Studies, King's College London.

"A poet and journalist looks back on a remarkable journey from Turkey to Nepal in 1978, when the region was on the brink of massive transformation. In the spring of 1978, at age twenty-two, Mark Abley put aside his studies at Oxford and set off with a friend on a three-month trek across the celebrated Hippie Trail -- a sprawling route between Europe and South Asia, peppered with Western bohemians and vagabonds. It was a time when the Shah of Iran still reigned supreme, Afghanistan lay at peace, and city streets from Turkey to India teemed with unrest. Within a year, many of the places he visited would become inaccessible to foreign travellers. Drawing from the tattered notebooks he filled as a youthful wanderer, Abley brings his kaleidoscope of experiences back to life with vivid detail: dancing in a Turkish disco, clambering across a glacier in Kashmir, travelling by train among Baluchi tribesmen who smuggled kitchen appliances over international borders. He also reflects on the impact of the Hippie Trail and the illusions of those who journeyed along it. The lively immediacy of Abley's journals combined with the measured wisdom of his mature, contemporary voice provides rich insight, bringing vibrant witness and historical perspective to this beautifully written portrait of a region during a time of irrevocable change."--

Birthplace of Buddha and home to stunning Himalayan peaks, Nepal is also known for its unique cuisine and rich cultural traditions. Nepal is a landlocked country that had little contact with the outside world for centuries, resulting in a unique culinary culture that was not influenced by other cuisines. After opening borders in the 1950s, however, Nepal’s cuisine evolved to take on influences from neighboring India, China and Tibet. Those influences, combined with Nepal’s vast cultural and geographic diversity, result in a singular cuisine characterized by the simplicity of fresh local ingredients that are artfully paired with herbs and spices.A Nepali staple is Daal-Bhaat-Tarkaari (lentil-rice-vegetable), found in many variations and flavors. It includes boiled rice accompanied by daal made from dried beans, lentils, or peas. A variety of fresh vegetables and leafy greens round out the meal. The use of spices is mild and subtle, but meals are often served with a side of spicy pickles. Meat, poultry, and fish are served only occasionally, mostly during celebrations.Author Jyoti Pathak’s first cookbook Taste of Nepal won a Gourmand World Cookbook award for Best Foreign Cuisine Cookbook and showcased the foods and recipes of her native Nepal to a wider audience. This new cookbook brings the foods and flavors of Nepal alive with color photographs throughout, notes about important Nepali customs, festivals and holidays, and a collection of 185 recipes that spans traditional Nepali fare to popular fusion dishes, street foods and the modern Nepali table. Also included are helpful chapters on Nepali ingredients, utensils and cooking techniques and a glossary of Nepali-English words.Sample recipes:Kukhura ko Chowelaa (Chicken Chowelaa)Jwaano-Bhaat (Ajowan Rice)Maas ko Khichari (Split Urad Bean-Rice Khichari)Panchamukhi Daal (Mixed Five Daal)Tinkune-roti (Flaky Roti Bread)Sit le Khaeko Raayo so Saag (Spiced Mustard Greens)Pharsi ko Munta (Pumpkin Vine Shoots)Rukh-Katahar ko Tarkaari (Green Jackfruit Curry)Alu ko Achaar (Spicy Potato Salad with Sesame Seeds)Dahi Haaleko Khasi ko Maasu (Goat Curry with Yogurt)

This book is an examination of aesthetic thought of Chinese pre-Qin Confucians with a focus on the idea of Yue Jiao (Music Education). Confucius is regarded as the first educational philosopher in Chinese history both chronologically and in importance. A central theme in his aesthetics is that the final perfection of one¿s personhood as an integrated whole is accomplished by the study of music. In this book, the author argues that aesthetic education, music education in particular, has an indispensible role in developing a harmonious balance between our rational intelligence and emotional sensibilities. It provides an ideal for living in the world today when unity is achieved without eliminating diversities. The discussion in this book should help shed some light on comparative studies of Chinese and western aesthetics. Both Confucian aesthetic tradition and ancient Greek aesthetic tradition have a long history of the important role of music in human development and education. But they differ in their understanding of the foundation of musical value. The analysis also contributes to educational philosophers' reflection on the nature and role of education in today's world.

With this book I have two aims. The first is to demonstrate why classical humanism appears to be obsolete from a post-humanistic perspective, and the second is to illustrate the contribution made by mimetic theory to the comprehension of the subject. In the first part of the paper we shall see why the notion of identity proposed by classical humanism is entirely inadequate towards the comprehension of the reality of man, that is relational historicity. In the second part we shall see how René Girard¿s hypothesis is effective in terms of the hermeneutics of the subject and perfectly in tune with a post-humanist consideration of reality.

Wordsworth¿s poetry, especially The Prelude, famously engages with deep and difficult philosophical problems of time, memory, selfhood, freedom and consciousness, among others. Classical Indian metaphysics and epistemology, specially of the variety of Advaita Vedanta aspoused by Sankaracharya, not only has many profound things to say about these topics, but can also, interpret, question and supplement Western notions. It would then seem natural and desirable to study canonical Western texts with significant philosophical orientations in the light of classical Indian philosophy. This book proposes to show how Vedantic notions of freedom and consciousness, and of the relationship between the two, may, when applied to Wordsworth¿s poetry, enhance and enrich our understanding of it.According to Vedanta and Sankhya philosophies, we are free in so far as we are conscious: however, this applies to pure or non-intentional consciousness. In the case of intentional (object-directed) consciousness we are in bondage to our sense organs. So an approach to freedom would, on this view, involve a progression from intentional to pure consciousness.

Humanity strives for happiness. A quick check of the word ¿happy¿ in Google yielded more hits than ¿God¿. Everyone knows about the beauty of happiness and no one wants to face pain, sadness and miseries in life. But in reality, happiness does not lasts forever. It rather comes in discontinuous bouts, so the joy is often buried in distress of daily activities. Then, one may ask: is there a way to achieve long lasting bliss? Do religions help to speed up this blissful endeavor? These questions haunt the minds of millions of souls globally at some point in their lives. In fact, religions provide social support that people often need. They outline all ethical guidelines on how one should coexist in society peacefully. Hinduism is considered to be one of the oldest living religions of the world with over a billion followers. It offers some interesting options to ultimate happiness. In this monograph, the author, who is a global expert on nature and culture, has explored both practical and philosophical insights into ancient Hindu scriptures to unlock the secrets on the ultimate human happiness saga.

The fundamental focus of mysticism is to establish a well-knitted and concrete link between an individual and his inner-self through cogitation, contemplation, conviction and commitment. When an individual works consistently on his inner-self then eventually he develops a sheer sense of love, harmony, forgiveness, compassion, pleasure and peace. He appears tall in discharging his social obligation and strives to maintain a balance between individualism and collectivism. He seems more composed and powerful to counter odds of life and choose a straight path for himself. In fact, he touches the height of human excellence and appears confident to control his inner self. Primarily, the state of transcendence which exemplifies the strength of one¿s personality in a multi-dimensional manner. This mannerism is a humble beginning to reach above human essence that replicates those characteristics of personality that are hidden but existing and can only be explored through sheer persuasion of those attributes which requires a human to strive for par excellence.

Abuhamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (1059 - 1111) was a renowned individual during Medieval times in the Middle East, who left behind a rich spiritual heritage. He is the author of over seventy books, encompassing topics of theology, philosophy and Sufism. Al-Ghazali surveyed questions of morality on the basis of the Holy Koran and manuals of the Prophet Muhammad (s). Al-Ghazali's ethical ideas are written in the following works: "Manual to Governors", "Revival of religious sciences", "The Elixir happiness", "The letter to the son" and "A research of intimate mysteries of heart". In his writings, Ghazali emphasised that the belief/faith (iman) is an essence of morality and when a person obtains faith, it develops their morality. Ghazali deems the highest ethical values in humanity; love, justice, contentment, respect, judiciousness, consciousness, goodness, humility, eloquence, mercy, usefulness and generosity. The philosopher also describes the ethics of communication, especially that which is obtained from parents and extended family. He explains that an individual can be understood by interpreting the overall ¿decency¿ of their family, using the ¿highest ethical values¿ as a guide.

This book looks at the work of Edward W. Said, specifically his book 'Orientalism,' as making Said representative as a spokesperson for Arab concerns. Edward W. Said was born in 1935 in Palestine, then under British rule, to a Palestinian Arab Christian father and a Lebanese Greek Orthodox mother. He lived in Palestine and Egypt until he was 12 and then his family sent him to the US. After getting his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Princeton, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in English Literature from Harvard University. In 1963, he joined Columbia University¿s Comparative Literature faculty and taught there until his death in 2003. He also worked as a visiting scholar at Yale University and John Hopkins University. The origins of Orientalism Snake charmers, carpet vendors, and veiled women may conjure up ideas of the Middle East, North Africa, and West Asia, but they are also partially indebted to Orientalist fantasies. To understand these images, we have to understand the concept of Orientalism, beginning with the word ¿Orient¿ itself.

Hindu philosophy is divided into orthodox (astika) and heterodox (nastika). The orthodox accept the authority of the Vedas and the Upanishads, while the heterodox philosophical systems deny Vedic authority. The orthodox schools generally include six dar¿anas (view of the divine): Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, M¿m¿¿s¿ and Vedanta, and the common heterodox schools are Jainism, Buddhism, Ajñana, Ajivika and Lokaiata. The authors of the darsanas are: Vedanta (by Viasa), Yoga (by Patañyali), Sankhia (by Kapilá), Mimansa (by Yaimini), Niaiá (by Gótama), Vaisesika (by Kanada). They complement each other in pairs: ny¿ya and vai¿e¿ika, s¿¿khya and yoga, m¿m¿¿s¿ and ved¿nta.Vedanta ("end of the Vedas") is based on the main Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita. There are three main schools within Vedanta, which base their doctrine on the Upanishads: Advaita (non-dualistic), whose main exponent is Shankara (7th century); Advaita Visista (qualified non-dualistic), whose main exponent is Ramanuja (10th century); and Dvaita (dualistic or pluralistic), whose main exponent is Madhava (11th century).
