This book explores a panorama of historical studies, focused on the historical tensions between genealogical knowledge and well-known Pacific Islander engagements with genomic research in a postwar era of simultaneous decolonization and Big Science. These include connected examinations of ancient voyaging reconstruction and migration routes, ¿warrior genes,¿ a noted life-form patent case, questions of genetic engineering and biopiracy, the repatriation of ancestral remains, legacies of nuclear testing, and conflicts with the Human Genome Diversity Project in Oceania. It also considers the persistence of eugenics and race thinking within blood quanta and dispossession histories and how other histories are being written. Many of these subjects have been elaborated in detailed, specialist studies, but there is to date no single-volume overview of these multiple engagements that situates them all within a narrative framework of postwar racism and anti-racism, the technological promises ofgenetic science, and the cultural and political struggles and assertions of Indigenous islanders, whose voices structure and shape the arguments. It combines traditional archival and scholarly work with contemporary Islander commentary and research, and ranges from poetry to politics and molecular biology.

This action-packed thrilling adventure story, based on the author's own experiences, is triggered by a gang of arsonists setting fire to the Amazon rainforest while blackmailing governments to stop them doing so. This results in the Major, a ruthless mercenary, being employed by Bob, a multibillionaire, to help him tackle climate change head on. But the task almost ends in disaster when his aircraft is brought down into the blazing forest by an arsonist's drone. While Bob, who has made a few 'bob' selling the world uranium through his company Nuklin, tries to encourage countries to scrap all fossil fuelled power stations in exchange for a new type of small, modular reactor being developed by Rolls Royce, his mercenary, after raiding the arsonists with his beautiful Brazilian girlfriend, is accused of double homicide and thrown into a local gaol to face the gallows. Due to a feat of engineering, an aerial planting machine named a SPOD is developed in Rio to seed the Australian Outback with carbon eating plants. But having escaped death twice, getting it there without being seen is only the third of the Major's problems, which culminate when Ud, the Indonesian firebrand behind the arsonists, is persuaded by the mercenary, who finding his island lair is about to have his throat cut, to carry out a last ditch attempt to save the world from catastrophe - ending in victory.
Welcome to the stunning and unforgettable world of rural Queensland and New South Wales in Australia. This photo book is a journey through small country towns, their old buildings and other places that many of us may never have had the chance to experience. Through the lens of a digital camera, the photographer has captured the beauty, mystery, and rawness of a land that is as rugged as it is enchanting. These images were taken using a unique approach that combines modern digital technology with the timeless beauty of 1970s 35mm film. The result is a collection of photographs that transport us back in time and make us feel as though we are experiencing these moments firsthand. As you turn the pages of this book, you will discover uncommon places that are quintessentially Australian. From abandoned buildings to dusty roads, from sunburnt plains to old farm buildings, each photograph is a testament to the resilience and beauty of this land and its people. We often drive past small towns or old farm houses with rusty cars sitting next to dilapidated farm buildings. We don't stop and take the time to look at the beauty that can be found in simple settings. There are stories there, in these places. Stories about old buildings, shops, service stations, fire stations, churches and even an abandoned tennis court on the side of a rural country road. Through these images, enjoy the sense of wonder and adventure and explore outback Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Hopefully this book will inspire you to seek out your own adventures and to experience the magic of this incredible part of the world. This first volume takes you on a road trip through rural Queensland and Northern New South Wales through vivid pastel like images. In the tradition of a photography great, Stephen Shore, you are invited to immerse yourself in the captivating images that lie within these pages.
Voracious is a mythical beast. He lives on profits and is always hungry. A Midas beast, all he touches becomes a commodity. He appears in or is hinted at throughout this collection of beautifully crafted poems. In her seventh poetry collection, Karen Throssell includes poems about obesity and anorexia, agribusiness, diets and fads, the supermarket duopoly, starvation as a weapon of war, food additives, ultra-processed food, gluttony and greed. So the book is about the politics of food, its transformation via the capitalist economy from produce to product, and the resultant rise in 'pretend food' - food which is highly addictive but has no nutritional content. The seriousness of the subject matter is lightened with the author's characteristic quirky wit, by the inclusion of 'odes' to various fruit and vegetables, poems about food and family, and food traditions. There is much to be discovered and much to smile at in this important and highly accessible book.

This groundbreaking book delves into the lived experiences and collective wisdom of Indigenous communities impacted by colonialism. Through collaborations with non-Indigenous colleagues, this book seeks to inform current legal practices and advocate for a transformative shift toward justice, equity, and the recognition of First Law and Earth-centered law.By presenting Indigenous stories as case studies and incorporating the collective wisdom gained through extensive discussions and exchanges with non-Indigenous colleagues, the authors highlight the ways in which Australian law falls short in upholding holistic principles and fails to align with First Law and Earth-centered law. The book invites readers to consider alternative legal futures that are rooted in respect, justice, and the well-being of both Indigenous peoples and the natural environment. Through its thought-provoking analysis, literature reviews, and insights from Indigenous leaders, this book servesas a powerful resource for legal practitioners, policymakers, scholars, and anyone passionate about social justice and environmental sustainability. The book aims to ignite meaningful dialogue and inspire concrete actions to address the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples while fostering a more inclusive and equitable legal framework for the generations to come.

It was during the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-601) that China first introduced tea to Japan, but the gentle art of tea drinking did not fully take root until the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1127-1279) when a Japanese monk called Eisai returned from the Zhejiang Province, bringing with him the seeds for the first plantations and the principles of the Tea Culture. Eisai's book on the subject, Kissa Y¿j¿ki, began with the sentence 'Tea is the ultimate mental and medical remedy and has the ability to make one's life more full and complete.' Building on another ancient tradition, utamonogatari (poem stories), Amelia Fielden brings us Mint Tea from a Copper Pot & other tanka tales. Coming from 'a nation of tea-drinkers', I do not underestimate the significance of this everyday tradition. A cup of tea is curative, calming, ceremonial. For many of us, it is almost an act of ritual. It can be solitary, meditative, but like a memory, allowed to steep a while, it is made for sharing. It is comfort in a crisis, or while we wait for news. In her tanka tales, Amelia Fielden invites us to partake of these recollections of a long life, well-lived, a life filled with love, loss and longing; whether we are sipping Ceylon tea from porcelain cups in Japan, orange pekoe from the best china in an English country garden, mint tea behind wrought-iron gates and bolted cedar doors in the midst of a Moroccan revolution, or green tea in a temple precinct as we contemplate a dancing black butterfly, we are fully involved in Amelia's experience. Moreover, the eponymous mint tea from a copper pot is the image that permeates the collection and lingers long after it is finished. Mint: sharp, tantalising, refreshing, so exciting to the palate. Copper: the metal that redoubles the richness of a flame's reflection. The poet's mind is a fire bowl for memory, the 'sunset fire' that 'flares above the charcoal mountain rims'. This is a collection to savour and to return to again and again.Claire Everett, Tanka Prose Editor, Haibun Today, Editor, Skylark Tanka Journal

Detective Ramesh Ryan's career with Sydney's prestigious Organized Crime Unit is on the up, until he loses a court case against the city's most powerful drug dealer. In disgrace, the detective is relocated to the tiny Australian beach town of Barton. It is off-season in Barton-when its few criminals usually take a well-earned rest. But not this year! With the detective's arrival, the town suddenly becomes murder central. Two bodies are discovered in the space of days, both victims of drug overdoses. Then a mysterious foot is found washed up on the beach, and memories are awoken of an unsolved cold case of the teenager who disappeared fifteen years ago. Add to this a blossoming romance, along with a contract taken out on Ryan's life, and it's clear that the detective has jumped out of the Sydney frying pan into the Barton fire. What follows is an action-packed adventure, thrilling at every turn-where truth and lies are almost impossible to separate, and unexpected twists are the order of the day.
This aviation/travel journal is an account of the author's experiences in 59 years of travelling the globe. His half-Scottish roots may have something to do with his yearning for a desire to visit a number of cold-weather countries that many of us might stay away from, but might like to read about! There are some tropical visits and temperate ones too, but the latest tally has been 21 landings or take-offs within the Arctic Circle, and photos included in the book show Greenland, Iceland, Faroes, Svalbard (sometimes called Spitzbergen), The Falklands and Antarctica amongst others, but there are some in warmer temperature zones! Over those years of travel 124 separate trips have been made involving over 450 different flights. In the early years, many were propeller aircraft and then later jet transport but over that period 64 different types have been flown, and each is supported in the book by brief technical notes and a photo. The author's work in airline operations and then later in the travel agency sector allowed him the opportunity to extensively travel the world and see these sights. Later in retirement, the travel bug has continued. Interspersed into the timeline of the book is the author's autobiography of his time spent in the three countries he has lived in during his working life.
Tickets to the Fall of Icarus charts the flight of two flamboyant characters, Icarus and Audrey, as they navigate their way through the maelstrom of modern life amidst natural disasters, pandemics, online dating and even a little self-sabotage.In artfully executed narrative poetry, Gering deploys his inimitable style and humour to bring characters into dynamic life on the page. There are few readers who won't see glimmers or shards of themselves in Audrey and Icarus. These vignettes are surprising, bittersweet and strangely insightful as they coalesce in a collection that is a challenging but joyful exploration of what it means to be alive and incisively engaged in the 21st century.ReviewsFull of literary references, puns and wit, this collection is a waterfall of mordant humour, note-perfect and a mirror to our post-pandemic selves. Read it in a rush or savour the sly satire - or just gorge on the whimsy and poetic spell-making. You'll want to rush into the Australian bush to stash vodka and Lion Stout and make your own bottle sculpture by the road. And, of course, fall in love.- Anna Kerdijk Nicholson, author of Possession and Everyday Epic¿Gering achieves artistic flair through deft control of language and shots of Kafkaesque absurdism. This collection might be an invitation to dive deep into the blind-spot of the Johari window, that psychological tool to better understand our relationships and some frightening aspects of ourselves. But, hey, ultimately it's the landing that kills you, not the fall itself. So, through Gering's poignant yet bitingly honest storytelling, let's enjoy the flight! - Daniel Ionita, author of Pentimento

The year is 1890, and stream tin has been sensationally discovered in southern Stewart Island of New Zealand. Elizabeth - young, gentile, sheltered, and fresh off the boat from Scotland - has arrived in remote and rugged Port Pegasus to meet George, her betrothed, who is running the only miner's hotel there. But it is a chance meeting with miner who ends up capturing her heart, convincing her that her future is far different from what her family back home had in mind. Playing out alongside is the professional struggle between Professor James Black of Otago University, whose fervour to find the tin-lode caused the whole crazy tin rush in the first place, and his nemesis, staunch government geologist Alexander Mackay, who becomes hell bent on bringing everyone to their senses. As the rush implodes, the end is climatic for all concerned. A well-researched story of historical fiction which accurately records New Zealand's only tin rush, The Tin Cry takes its name from the scientific term describing the noise a bar of tin makes when it is continually bent back and forth until it eventually breaks.

In this sequel to Ride the Wind, we return to the outback of Western Australia and the unexpected reappearance of the wicked fairy, Alba. Once again, she will attempt to destroy the sisters, their horses, and the magic kingdom itself. Like the original story, this is a tale based on Aboriginal mythology. It combines elements of magical fantasy with factual details regarding the beliefs and culture of Australia's indigenous people and their use and protection of the natural flora and fauna of their beautiful land. The storyline raises issues concerning the historic mistreatment of Aboriginal people during the British Empire's colonial years. However, readers will find this an absorbing and uplifting novel, as they follow their favourite characters on a journey of discovery. The sisters are maturing into exceptional young women/riders, and Enzo is no longer a mere puppy and shows his true nature as he plays his part in family life. The Shaman and the fairies will be called upon to defeat Alba's evil schemes, but will their endeavours be triumphant this time? New, powerful magic will be required, and success or failure will hang in the balance.
