I love side-by-side stories since it is so fascinating when they finally coincide in a dynamic conclusion." Amazon Reviewer, 5 stars"What a great fast-paced story which has the reader looking forward to the next line, paragraph and page as it's an outstanding page turner!" Amazon Reviewer, 5 stars"Great new heir hunter! Flint is back!!! Heir hunter extraordinaire, Michael Flint, is back with his newest case!" Goodreads Reviewer, 5 stars"I was enthralled with this book because of the genealogist theme. I dabble in genealogy, and have hit my fair share of brick walls. Michael Flint is a great character, fully developed personality, with knowledge and fearlessness to pursue wrong-doing and try to make it right, not necessarily within the law. I couldn't put down either of the books in this series and am hopeful for more." Amazon Reviewer, 5 stars"I started reading Ms Capri's Jack Reacher spin-offs. I've read them all. Moving on to her other works. Great reads. Can't wait for the next in the Michael Flint series." Goodreads Reviewer, 5 stars"I like the fast pace and not having to wade through a description of the mosaic tile walls in the lobby of some building. A tenacious character with a set of values and a conscience. A very good read. Couldn't put it down!" Amazon Reviewer, 5 stars"Tense and captivating page turner. I really enjoyed the Heir Hunter series and am hoping for more real soon. Michael Flint is a true adventure hero every bit as good as Indiana Jones with a dose of Jack Reacher thrown in for good measure. He's highly principled, while somewhat flawed, but very loyal with a vulnerable side he'd rather keep hidden. Please Diane Capri......more, more, more!" Amazon Reviewer, 5 stars"This second book was every bit as riveting as I'd hoped for. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and I could hardly put it down. I can't wait for the third book in this series!!" Amazon Reviewer, 5 starsAward winning New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author DIANE CAPRI Does It Again in the Michael Flint, Heir Hunter Thrillers

In January 1942, the Japanese Imperial Army invaded New Guinea, landing on the northern coastal areas of this harsh, remote country. This book recounts the desperate efforts of missionaries, along with groups of downed allied airmen, ANGAU (Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit), officials and members of the 39th militia Battalion, to escape the invading Japanese army. Following each groups harrowing story as they made their way through the energy sapping heat of the Papuan jungle, skirmished with Japanese troops, grappled with the, at times dubious, loyalties of the Papuans they encountered, and tried to survive. Lines of Escape also details the incredible mission undertaken by Australian forces to cripple the Japanese air base at Salamaua.
Between 2016 and 2020 Australia's foreign and security policies were significantly impacted by profound changes in geopolitics and geoeconomics, particularly as great power competition re-emerged between the United States and China. Australia in World Affairs 2016-2020: A Return to Great-Power Rivalry examines Australia's engagement on the international stage in light of these events. The thirteenth volume in the Australia in World Affairs series builds on the history of Australia's foreign policy covered in other volumes to identify patterns of continuity and change. It catalogues the key developments in this period of world history from an Australian perspective. Organised thematically, chapters cover Australia's foreign policy response to climate change, Australia's strengthened ties to the Indo-Pacific region, and its security interests in Southeast Asia. Australia's increasing security dependence on the US in an age of great-power rivalry is evident throughout.

The authors take an in-depth look at an accepted practice of classifying ALL animals held in a business of primary product in Australia as revenue assets regardless of the function they perform in that business. This practice denies retiring farmers tax concessions granted to other businesses. They describe the practice as unfair, and after a deep examination of the circumstances that gave rise to the generally accepted accounting and tax interpretation, they find that it is not true. They report their story and point their fingers at a glaring tax injustice.

This book describes the ethnic identity construction involved in ¿being¿, ¿feeling¿ and ¿doing¿ Chinese for multi-generation Australian-born Chinese, who were born and raised in a different social environment. It demonstrates how Chineseness is manifested in a multitude of ways and totally debunks any notion that being Chinese is a simple identity marker. The book shows that while there are commonalities with the American-born, the experiences of Australia-born Chinese are distinct in many ways. This book is a timely and critically examination of the inescapability of Chineseness particularly when social and economic stability is threatened and those in power are looking for a scapegoat.
In this poignant new poetry collection, one of New Zealand's most significant voices reflects on home, on away, and on friends living and dead. 'I lead a life of quiet medication', the poet claims, 'longing for foreign shores, adventure and death.' But whether swimming to the yellow buoy or remembering an encounter in Belsize Park, in the thick of it or asking, 'what next?', Stead's voice is intimate, amusing and always compelling.'This Side of Silence resounds with intimations of mortality, compounded with reactions to a contemporary world of pandemic, climate change and war, but this collection is not in the least morose. Rather, the poetry is enlivening - concrete, particular, detailed and often playful. There is a wealth of sensory content, and each poem has its own satisfying shape, with easy idiomatic speech forming its special kind of rhythm. In this book a major modern poet continues to "live and sing".' - MacDonald P. Jackson'Stead has his usual quick wit and steely eye for his world and, at 90, has the linguistic dexterity that many thousands of aspiring writers can only dream about.' - Chris Reed, NZ Booklovers
Fulfilling a lifelong dream and buying a rural property, the writer is surprised to discover the farm becomes a rich source of poetic inspiration. This collection is the outcome of over three decades of reflection and writing about the joys and sorrows of a small farmer. With boyhood memories of Australian wheat-belt farms and ideas from Wendell Berry's agrarian writing, the author sets out to discover his own reality of farming on this hillside property. 'Get big or get out' is perhaps the counter mantra of this collection, as the struggle to find sufficiency in being small and unprofitable defines the lived experience of farming. Deeper considerations emerge, as a growing awareness of the destructive nature of Australian agriculture tempers any romantic notions of 'life on the land'. In the end, it is the agrarian spirit, the sense of a true community of nature, which activates and sustains this collection.
Wendell Watt lives in Sydney. Apart from family, her two loves have been science and writing. She chose science for a secure livelihood but now writing takes top place. Her work has been published in newspapers, journals and anthologies and has won various prizes, and a poetry chapbook Oranges Grow on Trees was published by Ginninderra Press. Her poems take inspiration from the natural world, and reflect on a range of life experiences and the humorous absurdities that crop up along the way.
The Islamic occupation of the Algarve during the Middle Ages left a strong legacy in many areas of Portuguese culture. We call this territorial domain Gharb al-Andalus. In addition to the intangible legacy, the material remains discovered throughout the region attest to the long permanence of Islamic occupation. Within these parameters, a large number of Islamic buildings have been classified as National Monuments and Buildings of Public Interest. However, many of these structures leave us in doubt as to the state of preservation and dissemination of the heritage to local communities. This book addresses this shortcoming in an informative way, with fact sheets on Islamic heritage in the Algarve. Safeguarding the built cultural heritage is a patent that should not be ignored and, hopefully, new initiatives to protect the legacy of our history and culture will be realised.
Wild Swans meets Educated in this riveting true story spanning four generations 'Revelatory and remarkable' - TRENT DALTON'Memorable and vivid' - RICHARD GLOVER'Lands with a thump in your heart' - LISA MILLAR'Heartbreaking and uplifting' - MEAGHAN WILSON ANASTASIOS'An heroic saga' - MIKE MUNROThe dragon circles and swoops ... a tiger running alone in the night ...Mimi Kwa ignored the letter for days. When she finally opened it, the news was so shocking her hair turned grey. Why would a father sue his own daughter? The collision was over the estate of Mimi's beloved Aunt Theresa, but its seed had been sown long ago. In an attempt to understand how it had come to this, Mimi unspools her rich family history in House of Kwa. One of a wealthy silk merchant's 32 children, Mimi's father, Francis, was just a little boy when the Kwa family became caught up in the brutal and devastating Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. Years later, he was sent to study in Australia by his now independent and successful older sister Theresa. There he met and married Mimi's mother, a nineteen-year-old with an undiagnosed, chronic mental illness. Soon after, 'tiger' Mimi arrived, and her struggle with the past - and the dragon - began ...Riveting, colourful and often darkly humorous, House of Kwa is an epic family drama spanning four generations, and an unforgettable story about how one woman finds the courage to stand up for her freedom and independence, squaring off against the ghosts of the past and finally putting them to rest. Throughout, her inspiration is Francis's late older sister, the jet-setting, free-spirited Aunt Theresa, whose extraordinary life is a beacon of hope in the darkness.PRAISE FOR HOUSE OF KWA'House of Kwa enchants and enthrals like the best kind of sweeping, dynastic fiction, but it rattles the bones and breaks the heart with the pure facts of Mimi Kwa's extraordinary story. Revelatory and remarkable storytelling.' Trent Dalton'An astonishing true tale that leaps across centuries and cultures to land with a thump in your heart.' Lisa Millar'A startling tale of the past, its terrible grip on the present, and the battle to set yourself free. Full of scenes that hover between tragedy and farce, House of Kwa is one of the most compelling stories you'll read this year. Memorable and vividly told, this is a book for anybody forced to survive their own parents.' Richard Glover'From the back streets of China to war-torn Hong Kong to suburban Australia, this is an heroic saga that reveals just some of the stories behind the multi-cultural nation we are today.' Mike Munro AO'This is a charming and compelling story, an insight into a deeply traditional Chinese family in times when China was undergoing internally and externally induced upheaval.' South China Morning Post'A rich and riveting read which heralds a new chapter in Kwa's life as a writer. The spirited tiger, full of life and driven to achieve, has many stories to tell yet.' The Weekend Australian'House of Kwa answers the question of how one should write about one's family with generosity and love - to read it is to experience Kwa's wonder at the strength and resilience of her family, as well as the intimacy of her relationships with them. Traversing the boundaries of a traditional memoir, House of Kwa is the biography of a family that explores the way our lives are shaped by the past we can and cannot remember. Kill Your Darlings'A rare work of non-fiction which balances page turning prose with lyrical depth. Do yourself and everyone you know a favour and dive in!' Megan RogersAn utterly captivating, gripping and inspirational tale of one woman's triumph over adversity. In this extraordinary multi-generational memoir, Kwa fearlessly grapples with questions of love, loyalty, and the power of the human spirit. Intimate and revelatory, House of Kwa is the most heart-breaking and uplifting book I have read in years and announces the arrival of an exciting writer. Meaghan Wilson Anastasios'If you're a fan of the book Educated by Tara Westover, as I am, and most readers I know are, then you have to read this.' Joan McKenzie, Joan's Picks, Whitcoulls'Mimi's narrative about their family life is heart-breaking, hilarious, and often unbelievable.' Magic talk FM'An exotic journey that takes readers through the contributions Chinese immigrants have made to multicultural Australia.' ABC Nightlife'Kwa is an engaging storyteller.' Asian Review of Books'Extraordinary - I couldn't put it down. Wonderfully written, this intriguing family story reads like a page-turning novel. The journey of the Kwa dynasty and its legacy is told in such rich, colourful detail, you feel like you are there. I loved it. Sue Smethurst'I laughed, I grieved, I was intrigued. It took enormous strength to write this story of trauma, abuse, mental health, dislocation, racism and reinvention. Above all it is a story of love and kindness. It will resonate with so many people.' Kirsty Manning
