Since ancient times, we, humans, have shared information. We have oral traditions and written books, stories and beautiful theories of origins. Yet, we lack consensus about where we are from. Storytelling takes us back in time. Evolution is in our back bone. Many speak about revelations. When are we going to win?Chronicles of the Good Family is a series looking into how we can become good, learn to understand our planet, and the universe that surrounds it.Far north, the Northern star, North Pole, North wind, Earth's axis - where does the known world end?In the Saga of the Ring, also known as the Bock Saga, it is told, that in ancient times people used to gather at a Rasti, a crossing point, to receive information. These teachings were presented by acting characters, and told through rhymes. Some of the rhymes have survived time, and are collected in manuscripts like Kalevala. Tolkien received inspiration from them, while creating The Lord of the Rings. And so the ring circles the ring. That which is precious, can sometimes seem to be out of reach. Through understanding, we can learn, and see, what there is to know. Eventually, we become good and give peace, and so we reach far. Everything that is hidden will be revealed.

Euthyphro by Plato, is a Socratic dialogue whose events occur in the weeks before the trial of Socrates (399 BC), between Socrates and Euthyphro. The dialogue covers subjects such as the meaning of piety and justice. As is common with Plato's earliest dialogues, it ends in aporia. In this dialogue, Socrates meets Euthyphro at the porch of the archon basileus (the 'king magistrate') at that time. Socrates tells him that he is preparing to go to court against the charges of Meletus on the grounds of impiety. Euthyphro tells Socrates that he is going to court himself to prosecute his father for binding a worker in chains and leaving him to die. This has granted him the ire of his own family who believe his father was in the right. The worker had killed a fellow worker, which they believe exempts his father from liability for leaving him bound in the ditch to starve to death. Since Euthyphro seems assured of himself, Socrates asks him to define piety. His help will clarify Socrates' case in the courtroom. If Socrates is asked to define piety, he can simply rely on Euthyphro's definition. This however leads to the main dilemma of the dialogue when the two cannot come to a satisfactory conclusion. Is something pious because the gods approve of it or do the gods approve of it because it is pious? This aporic ending has led to one of the longest theological and meta-ethical debates in history. The dialogue in Euthyphro occurs near the court of the archon basileus (king magistrate), where Socrates and Euthyphro encounter each other; each man is present at the court for the preliminary hearings to possible trials.Euthyphro has come to present charges of murder against his own father who, after arresting one of his workers (Thetes) for killing a slave from the family estate on Naxos Island, tied him and threw him in a ditch where he died of exposure to the elements (3e-4d) while Euthyphro's father waited to hear from the exegetes (cf. Laws 759d) about how to proceed. Socrates is astonished by Euthyphro's confidence in being able to prosecute his own father for the serious charge of manslaughter, despite the fact that Athenian Law allows only relatives of the dead man to file suit for murder (Dem. 43 §57). Euthyphro dismisses the astonishment of Socrates, which confirms his overconfidence in his own critical judgment of religious and ethical matters
THIS is the first volume, time period 1917-1930, of an empirical study of the relationship between Western technology, entrepreneurship and the economic growth of the Soviet Union.By far the most significant factor in the development of the Soviet economy has been its absorption of Western technology and skills. The continuing transfer of skills and technology to the Soviet Union through the medium of foreign firms and engineers in the period 1917 to 1930 can only be characterized as extraordinary.
Hippolytus composed his now largely lost work of the history of the Roman Empire sometime in the late 6th century. While its influence appears to resonant across the centuries, the text itself has been lost. What is compiled here is the few surviving fragments of his works preserved in various extended quotations by other authors. Much of his surviving writings give us precious insight in the personal life of the family of Christ, his sisters, and extended family, as well as notes about the reign of the Emperor Constantine I.

"Are Greek neighbours natural enemies in the Archaic and Classical period? This book uses literary, archaeological and epigraphic sources to reveal that the neighbours Attica and Boiotia had a more complex and positive relationship than has been assumed until now"--
Outgrowth of the author's thesis (doctoral)--Yale University, 2017, under the title: Complex sensations of divine music in archaic and classical Greek art.

The influence of the ulema, the official Sunni Muslim religious scholars of the Ottoman Empire, is commonly understood to have waned in the empire's last century. Drawing upon Ottoman state archives and the institutional archives of the ulema, this study challenges this narrative, showing that the ulema underwent a process of professionalisation as part of the wider Tanzimat reforms and thereby continued to play an important role in Ottoman society. First outlining transformations in the office of the Sheikh ul-islam, the leading Ottoman Sunni Muslim cleric, the book goes on to use the archives to present a detailed portrait of the lives of individual ulema, charting their education and professional and social lives. It also includes a glossary of Turkish-Arabic vocabulary for increased clarity. Contrary to beliefs about their decline, the book shows they played a central role in the empire's efforts to centralise the state by acting as intermediaries between the government and social groups, particularly on the empire's peripheries.

The third dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt saw an extraordinary development of building techniques, from the simple structures of mud brick at the end of the second dynasty to the towering pyramids of the fourth dynasty. Just how these massive structures were built has long been a matter of conjecture, but history is made up of the lives and actions of individuals; kings and architects, scribes and priests, soldiers and artisans, even common labourers, and so the story of the Pyramid Builders unfolded over the course of more than a century. This is that story…Like a breath of fresh air after a generation of stagnation, Huni becomes king and sets about reorganising Egypt. He divides the land into administrative regions under governors and devises a way to bring the blessings of the gods to all men--he will build small pyramids up and down the length of the river, reserving a simple tomb for himself.Even as Den and his sons build for the king, his twin daughters threaten to tear down the king's future. One falls in love with the heir to the throne, while the other seeks the heir's death. Which one succeeds will determine the fortunes of their extended family.

"There are many fishes in the Sea," in fact so many that it is possible to have a different kind served every day of the year, and still not exhaust the variety, but it is necessary to the attainment of this result to have the resources of a great city fish market at one's command. Thanks to the skill of the trained cook there are an infinite number of ways in which the commoner sort of fish that are to be had everywhere, can be transformed into a great variety of dainty, yet simple and inexpensive dishes. And here is the value of this publication. Cook books there are of all sorts and shapes, but strange to say the subject of Fish Cookery has been sadly neglected in all of them, and to supply this deficiency, the following collection of receipts has been carefully gathered and properly arranged for the convenience of the housewife, no time or expense having been spared to make the volume a thoroughly reliable and practical guide upon the important subject which it treats. The experience of distinguished chefs and epicures of many lands have been fully drawn upon, while noted travellers, anglers, and sportsmen, who have been pleased with the cookery of some famous guide or cook, have revealed his secrets for the benefit of our readers. The famous housekeepers have assisted, too, and have contributed generously from the wealth of their experience. In addition to the receipts there will be found within the covers of the book much other information of value to the reader, about the best fish foods, where obtained and how to be made of the best service. It is in every way a complete guide to the culinary art as applied to the fish family.
