Der römische Historiker Ammianus Marcellinus gilt als einer der wichtigsten Autoren zum Thema Alamannen. In seiner Römischen Geschichte "Res gestae" gibt er einen weitreichenden Einblick, in die unzähligen Begegnungen der Römer mit den Alamannen. Sein umfangreiches Werk, stellt eine wesentliche Quelle für die Auseinandersetzung mit den Alamannen dar. Außer den Schriftquellen stellen archäologische Funde eine zweite wichtige Säule dar, um sich den zumeist im Verborgenen liegenden Anfängen dieses Volkes zu nähern.Der Begriff "Formierung" beschreibt einen Prozess, im Laufe dessen aus unterschiedlich benannten und abstammenden Gruppierungen, beispielsweise Kriegerverbänden, offensichtlich eine neue große Einheit wird. Ihren Namen kann diese Einheit entweder von außerhalb bekommen und angenommen oder ihn zum Zweck der Selbstbezeichnung bestimmt haben. Jener Name dient dann sowohl den Nachbarn, den Geschichtsschreibern und der neu entstandenen Einheit selbst, als Eigenname. Was die Formierung der Alamannen in der Spätantike anbelangt, wir sprechen hier von einem Zeitraum vom 3. bis zum 5. Jahrhundert, waren sie unter diesem Namen nicht bekannt, legten aber zu dieser Zeit den Grundstein für die weitere Entwicklung ihres Stammes.In der Fachliteratur zu den Alamannen tauchen immer wieder unterschiedliche Schreibweisen des Namens auf, welche zu Verwirrungen führen können. In den ersten Schriftquellen des 3. Jahrhunderts die uns von den Römern überliefert wurden, wird von den "Alamanni" gesprochen. In der Geschichtswissenschaft und der Archäologie wird deshalb die Schreibweise mit "a" bevorzugt. Die e-Variante ist neueren Datums.
