  • af Benjamin Gourisse
    452,95 kr.

This book examines the period of political violence in Turkey between 12 March 1971 and 12 September 1980. It sets out a close analysis of the tactics used by the various protagonists in the conflict, showing how they took over public institutions, the first of which was the police. This book challenges the myth of a 'strong' Turkish state viewed as authoritative and autonomous from society, instead reflecting a state that was unable to contain the political mobilisation actually taking place. In the book, Benjamin Gourisse analyses the structure, mobilisation, and strategies of antagonistic radical political groups caught up in this dynamic of violence, including the far-left organisations and the Nationalist Movement, comprising the Nationalist Movement Party and its satellite organisations. Gourisse demonstrates that from 1975 to 1980, the state was never "out of play". Quite the contrary, in fact, for its institutions, together with the practices, beliefs, and representations of their members and users, were central to the processes constituting the crisis.

"From the time she first felt called to its gates as a high school student fascinated by Dante and Italian thanks to a life-changing teacher, Rome has been a fixed star around which Alizah Holstein's life has rotated-despite the fact that she bears no Italian heritage, and has never lived there long enough to call it home. In this kaleidoscopic yet intimate memoir, her shifting relationship to a vibrant city layered with human history becomes a lens on why we look to the past, on the mysteries of affinity and desire, and on what it means to grow up. Holstein weaves the stories of Romans past and present, and encounters with the city of historical figures from Petrarch to Freud, into the narrative of her evolution from a curious student abuzz with the thrill of discovery, to a lonely researcher in a city to which she feels she belongs despite knowing no one, to an ambitious young historian struggling to find her place in the halls of academia. Following a trail of memories-that first taste of a tartufo cioccolato in Piazza Navona, the ancient walls of the Via Appia blurring from the back of a motorcycle, the smudge of ink on a manuscript left by a scribe's hand over seven hundred years before-she explores what it means to be romana, Roman-and to find solace and self-knowledge in the presence of the past."--

The true, harrowing story of the ill-fated 1913 Canadian Arctic Expedition and the two men who came to define it.In the summer of 1913, the wooden-hulled brigantine Karluk departed Canada for the Arctic Ocean. At the helm was Captain Bob Bartlett, considered the world's greatest living ice navigator. The expedition's visionary leader was a flamboyant impresario named Vilhjalmur Stefansson hungry for fame.Just six weeks after the Karluk departed, giant ice floes closed in around her. As the ship became icebound, Stefansson disembarked with five companions and struck out on what he claimed was a 10-day caribou hunting trip. Most on board would never see him again.Twenty-two men and an Inuit woman with two small daughters now stood on a mile-square ice floe, their ship and their original leader gone. Under Bartlett's leadership they built make-shift shelters, surviving the freezing darkness of Polar night. Captain Bartlett now made a difficult and courageous decision. He would take one of the young Inuit hunters and attempt a 1000-mile journey to save the shipwrecked survivors. It was their only hope.Set against the backdrop of the Titanic disaster and World War I, filled with heroism, tragedy, and scientific discovery, Buddy Levy's Empire of Ice and Stone tells the story of two men and two distinctively different brands of leadership-one selfless, one self-serving-and how they would forever be bound by one of the most audacious and disastrous expeditions in polar history, considered the last great voyage of the Heroic Age of Discovery.

Christianity's engagement with late antique culture. The specific focus is on the intricate relationship, interaction, and sometimes confrontation between Christianity and Hellenism. The chapter's objectives are twofold: first, to examine the reception of the relationship between Christianity and Hellenism in modern scholarship, and second, to assess John Chrysostom's role within this complex dynamic.John Chrysostom lived during a pivotal period when Christianity was gradually emerging as the dominant religion within the Roman Empire. His attitude towards Hellenism has historically provoked diverse responses. On one hand, some scholars view him as a proponent of the fruitful encounter between Christian teachings and Hellenic culture, asserting that he played a significant role in the assimilation of Greek culture into the burgeoning Christianity of his time. On the other hand, there are those who label him as a "champion of anti-Hellenism," a characterization that warrants further exploration.

What can the fall of Rome teach us about the decline of the West today? A historian and a political economist, both experts in their field, investigateOver the last three centuries, the West rose to dominate the planet. Then, suddenly, around the turn of the millennium, history reversed. Faced with economic stagnation and internal political division, the West has found itself in rapid decline. This is not the first time the global order has witnessed such a dramatic rise and fall. The Roman Empire followed a similar arc from dizzying power to disintegration - a fact that is more than a strange historical coincidence. In Why Empires Fall, historian Peter Heather and political economist John Rapley use this Roman past to think anew about the contemporary West, its state of crisis, and what paths we could take out of it.In this exceptional, transformative intervention, Heather and Rapley explore the uncanny parallels - and productive differences - between the two cases, moving beyond the familiar tropes of invading barbarians and civilizational decay to learn new lessons from ancient history. From 399 to 1999, the life cycles of empires, they argue, sow the seeds of their inevitable destruction. The era of western global domination has reached its end - so what comes next?

The recently murdered Queen Nefertiti of Egypt stands before the gods in the Underworld. To be granted eternal life, she must convince them her life has been worthy. Should she fail, she will be consigned to oblivion. To prove her worthiness, she undertakes a review of her life - from the moment when, as a child, the gods assigned her the task of maintaining cosmic balance, to her turbulent forced marriage to Akhenaten, the one Pharaoh in Egypt's long history who set out to tear that balance apart. Her marriage becomes steadily more difficult as Akhenaten's obsession to legitimize the worship of only one god throws society into chaos. Nefertiti assumes more and more of his duties, at a time when simply having a woman in charge is itself viewed as an upset of the cosmic balance. But Nefertiti's greatest challenge arises as she fails to produce a male heir to preserve the dynasty. As Akhenaten turns in desperation towards Nefertiti's beautiful young daughters to birth him a son, Nefertiti must balance the future of Egypt and the weight of her royal responsibilities against her love for her daughters.
