I dette selskab er Maximian langt den mest sortsynede.Denne bog handler i høj grad om det mistede og længslen efter det. Men lige så ubærligt trøstesløse elegierne er, lige så komiske er elegierne også i versenes lethed og frådende hån og spot af forfatteren og hans maskuline forfængelighed. Oldingens krop er et ”gravsted for sanser og vid”, alderdommen sammenlignes med at være en levende død, og den aldrende digter latterliggør sig selv nådesløst: ”Vaklende, skælvende står gammelfar og tror altid det værste (…). / Hensvundne dage lovpriser han og foragter samtiden, / kun det, han selv kender til, regnes for vigtigt og sandt. / Han mener, at han alene i verden er lærd og forstandig. / Når han fremturer som vis, / bliver han visselig dum.”Der er mange mislykkede samlejer i Levende død, og generelt beskrives den seksuelle drift som plagsom og pinefuld; selv digterens impotens er ikke i stand til at fjerne det evige begær. Seksualiteten bliver beskrevet som ét stort tab – af uskyld, af potens. Men det handler om mere end kroppens forfald: Hos Maximian bevæger den gamle mands slappe lem sig ”på et øjeblik fra det private til det kosmiske, fra eksem og rindende øjne til stormagters kollaps og alt levendes ophør”, som Harald Voetmann skriver i efterordet, og bliver til en metafor for forgængelighed som universel livsbetingelse.Om den senromerske digter Maximians liv ved man næsten intet[LB1] . I elegierne fortæller han, at han er af etruskisk afstamning, at han har været advokat, at han har kendt filosoffen, senatoren og digterkollegaen Böethius, og at han som aldrende mand har været sendt på diplomatisk fredsmission til Konstantinopel – intet vides dog med sikkerhed.Maximians eneste kendte værk er disse seks elegier fra midten af det 6. århundrede e.v.t. Heri jamrer han over sin svigtende potens, svælger i sine minder om alt det, der aldrig blev til noget, og beklager sig over altings – kroppens, nationens, universets – forfald.
