Having been defeated in the First World War, Bulgaria, as a result of the implementation of peace treaty clauses, could not purchase tanks until the early 1930s. Due to the lack of industrialisation, it was forced to turn to the countries that were the main producers of armoured vehicles at that time. Thus, the CV33 fast tanks were purchased from Italy, the Vickers Mk. E from England and the LT vz. 35. After the first units were established, thanks to Germany, into whose sphere of influence Bulgaria had entered, French wartime French tanks, the Renault R35, and new Czechoslovak tanks were purchased. In 1943, with the establishment of the Bronirana Brigada, Panzer IVs and StuG IIIs arrived. In 1944, after the coup d'état, Bulgaria changed allegiance and joined the Red Army in the liberation of Yugoslavia and Hungary, fighting the Germans with its armoured units until the end of the conflict in May 1945.

Poems from the Volcano was written in a challenging and painful time in my life. Originally, I had bought a normal diary from WHSmiths with the thought that I would write my daily diary. I was rather overweight though. I had done a Prevention of Type II Diabetes Programme remotely using Microsoft Teams and because of this programme I was losing weight. From February 2022 I had also decided not to take any medication to treat my Bipolar Disorder. This had resulted in me not being able to sleep which resulted in me suffering horrific hallucinations. It was in the diary then I would write notes about my life. From the age of seventeen to twenty-two I had suffered different stages of mental illness which included, nervous tension, agoraphobia, schizophrenia. I was put in a psychiatric ward for four weeks. My life after that went into hell and out of sheer madness became obese. I began writing Poems from the Volcano in the Spring of 2022 and concluded in the Autumn of 2022. It is about adolescence heartbreak and the writing is inspired by own battle with heartbreak and depression. Some poems reflect political themes such as Ukraine and Russia. There is a historical poem called 'Tat', about Tutankhamun, the Egyptian pharaoh. These poems were a joy to pen.

DostoevskySober Hope: Finding Faith in the Bleak Midwinter As winter descends to end the year 2023, it is a time for contemplation: a time to revel in the joys and find balm for the woes of the past year, a time to find the courage to hold on, and the hope to thrive in the new year. Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821 - 1881) faced his own bleak (and Russian!) winters, from childhood play amongst the impoverished at his father's medical clinic to a last minute reprieve from the Tsar's firing squad for discussing banned books followed by ten years of prison camp and military service in exile. While his novels, such as Crime & Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov demonstrate human depravity they also give glimmers of grace, love, and beauty which have made him one of the most beloved novelists of all time. It is our hope that as you find time to relax during the holiday season (making it a habit for the new year!), that you will find these discussions deeply meaningful. Awaiting for you within are discussions of his characters from novels and short stories alike, Dostoevsky-inspired poems, and reviews of films, books, and even contemporary music which reflect the light and warmth he dared to find in his own bleak winter.

From the perspective of the Teutonic Order, the period under study (1411-1422) can be understood as a period of searching for a solution to an unresolved situation - especially in the conflict with Poland-Lithuania. The brothers of the Order did not assume that they were in an unchangeably bad position or in decline. Rather, they perceived the question of the long-term development of the Order's Prussia as undecided. However, due to its close observation of the political environment, the Order had to notice that no other actor was in a position to bring about this solution (e.g. by an arbitration award). As a consequence of this assessment, from 1420 onwards there are increasing considerations to shape one's own actions more actively and to show less consideration for other actors.
This issue of Slanted is not about war. It's about amazing people from the creative industry in and from Ukraine, trying to live a "normal" life, working super hard and giving their best, showing that culture and design cannot be separated. Slanted Magazine #43 is dedicated to the Ukrainian design scene. Despite the impossibility of visiting studios on location as in previous issues of Slanted Magazine, extensive contacts in the Ukrainian design scene helped to put together this diverse and complex magazine. This selection of works by Ukrainian designers, typographers and graphic designers was carefully chosen from 1,500 submissions - they exemplify the independence and resilience of Ukrainian design.
The authors used quantitative analysis and case studies of China, Iran, and Russia to examine the causes and likely future trends in proxy wars: civil wars in which at least one local warring party receives material support from an external state.
