The last full commentary on The Sack of Troy was published by Wernicke in 1819 and even the most recent analyses of the poem tend to see it as a quick halt in the evolution of epic poetry on its way towards Nonnus of Panopolis. This book offers a complete treatment of The Sack of Troy for its own sake. The introduction gathers all the information we have about Triphiodorus and his work, focusing on the reasons behind the election of topic, the outline of the poem, different forms of allusion, the use of the characterisation of individuals and groups to sustain plot development, the nature of the narrator and the value of speeches. The current study investigates the language use in two Volkswagen Group subsidiary companies Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co. Ltd. and Audi China in the Region China, focusing on language choices between 2 corporate languages English and German, in workplace communication.An overall preference to use English of employees in both companies was found. Furthermore, employees¿ previous international experience and specific communicational conditions were proved to be significant factors during their decision-making. Besides, the corporate language application in the two companies showed some differences, and the work explained the possible accounts.

Als dramaturgisches Mittel zur Belebung des mündlichen Vortrages gewährleistet die Konzeption der Reden, deren thematisches Spektrum sowohl situationsgebundene Äußerungen zu konkret historischen Anlässen sowie allgemeingültige Aussagen zu universellen Fragestellungen umfasst, die Einbeziehung eines historisch nicht versierten Publikums in die wissenschaftlich-historiographische Rahmenerzählung. Die einzigartige Verfassersituation Herodots als Begründer einer literarischen Gattung ermöglichte dem Autor die Ausprägung eines spezifisch-individuellen Verständnisses der Rede als literarisches Stilmittel ebenso wie als narratologisches Instrument. Mithilfe der narrativen Ausgestaltung der Reden durchbricht der Autor den objektiv-berichtenden Gestus seines Werkes. Demgemäß galten die ursprünglich als literarisches Dekor verstandenen Reden im Geschichtswerk Herodots lange Zeit als paradigmatisch für die erzählerischen Tendenzen im historiographischen Werk Herodots, dessen Interesse an anekdotischer Geschichtenerzählung eine elaborierte Argumentation auf der Basis eines fundierten Weltbildes überwogen habe. Innerhalb des Spektrums der herodotischen Reden betraf diese Kritik insbesondere die als digressive Narrationen klassifizierten paradigmatischen Reden.

The Greek commentary tradition devoted to explicating Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics (NE) was extensive. It began in antiquity with Aspasius and reached a point of immense sophistication in the twelfth century with the commentaries of Eustratius of Nicaea and Michael of Ephesus, which primarily served educational purposes. The use of Aristotle's ethics in the classroom continued into the late Byzantine period, but until recently scholastic use of the NE was known mostly through George Pachymeres' epitome of the NE (Book 11 of his Philosophia). This volume radically changes the landscape by providing the editio princeps of the last surviving exegetical commentary on the NE stricto sensu, also penned by Pachymeres. This represents a new witness to the importance of Aristotelian studies in the cultural revival of late Byzantium. The editio princeps is accompanied by an English translation and a thorough introduction, which offers an informed reading of the commentary's genre and layout, relationship to its sources, exegetical strategies, and philosophical originality. This book also includes the edition of diagrams and scholia accompanying Pachymeres' exegesis, whose paratextual function is key to a full understanding of the work.

Why did ancient autocrats patronise theatre? How could ancient theatre - rightly supposed to be an artform that developed and flourished under democracy - serve their needs? Plato claimed that poets of tragic drama "drag states into tyranny and democracy". The word order is very deliberate: he goes on to say that tragic poets are honoured "especially by the tyrants, and secondly by the democracies" (Republic 568c). For more than forty years scholars have explored the political, ideological, structural and economic links between democracy and theatre in ancient Greece. By contrast, the links between autocracy and theatre are virtually ignored, despite the fact that for the first 200 years of theatre's existence more than a third of all theatre-states were autocratic. For the next 600 years, theatre flourished almost exclusively under autocratic regimes. The volume brings together experts in ancient theatre to undertake the first systematic study of the patterns of use made of the theatre by tyrants, regents, kings and emperors. Theatre and Autocracy in the Ancient World is the first comprehensive study of the historical circumstances and means by which autocrats turned a medium of mass communication into an instrument of mass control.

Portfolios have been most widely used in the teaching of reading and writing, with a strong focus on classroom instruction, student ownership and self-evaluation, and teacher autonomy (Carter et al., 1991; Graves, 1983). More recently, portfolios have been proposed and adopted as statewide student assessment management tools in addition to or instead of standardized achievement test data (Baron, 1992; Brewer, 1990; O'Neil, 1992; Rothman, 1990). Provided that the purpose of portfolio contents is to expand understanding of a student¿s growth based on multiple measures, different kinds of test and non-test data can be included in a portfolio. Portfolios might also contain required information for state- or district- wide systems, but these data need not dominate or divert portfolio assessment from being used to inform classroom instruction (Paesani, 2006).
