THE EXTRAORDINARY LOST NOVEL FROM THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR OF LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA AND ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDESitting alone, overlooking the still and blue lagoon, Ana Magdalena Bach surveys the men of the hotel bar. And yet, every August, she travels here to the island where her mother is buried, and for one night takes a new lover.Amid sultry days and tropical downpours, lotharios and conmen, Ana journeys further each year into the hinterland of her desire, and the fear that sits quietly at her heart.Constantly surprising and wonderfully sensual, Until August is a profound meditation on freedom, regret, and the mysteries of love, from one of the greatest writers the world has ever known.'No writer since Dickens was so widely read, and so deeply loved, as Gabriel García Márquez' Salman Rushdie'One of the greatest visionary writers - and one of my favourites from the time I was young' Barack Obama'Few writers can be said to have written books that have changed the whole course of literature. **SHORTLISTED FOR THE ORWELL PRIZE 2024**From the Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author of Ghost Wars, the inside story of America's long and ruinous relationship with Saddam HusseinThe Achilles Trap masterfully untangles the people, ploys of power and geopolitics that led to America's disastrous war with Iraq and, for the first time, details America's fundamental miscalculations during its ruinous, decades-long relationship with Saddam Hussein.Beginning with Saddam's rise to power in 1979 and the birth of Iraq's secret nuclear weapons programme, Steve Coll traces Saddam's motives through understanding his inner circle. He brings to life the diplomats, scientists, family members and generals who had no choice but to defer to their leader - a leader directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, as well as the torture or imprisonment of many more. This was a man whose reasoning was impossible to reduce to a simple explanation, and the CIA and successive presidential administrations failed to grasp critical nuances in his paranoia, resentments and inconsistencies - even when the stakes were incredibly high.Using unpublished and underreported sources, interviews with surviving participants, and Saddam's own transcripts and audio files, The Achilles Trap is a remarkable picture of a dictator who was convinced the world was out to get him and acted accordingly. A work of great historical significance, it is the definitive account of how corruptions of power, lies of diplomacy and vanity - on both sides - led to avoidable errors of statecraft: ones that would enact immeasurable human suffering and forever change our political landscape.

Two decades of intricately layered works on paper from an artist known for his contemporary still lifesComprising 100 works on paper, Drawings: 2003-2023 is the most expansive collection of Jonas Wood's artistic practice to date. This body of work traces the artist's trajectory back to his early days in Los Angeles, where he worked alongside painter Laura Owens and sculptor Matt Johnson. It was during this formative period that Wood's distinct visual language began to take shape: a language that would come to define his mature practice. Drawing played a central role in Wood's process, serving as both preparatory sketches for his collages and paintings, as well as independent works of art in their own right. At the core of Wood's prolific output lies a deep appreciation for the handmade--a reverence reflected in his engagement with found photographs, manual projectors and half-erased pencil sketches. Although rendered in a flattened perspective, the resulting tableaux are deeply layered, revealing traces of the artist's hand, miscellaneous references and the transformative nature of various artistic media. The comprehensive catalog features an essay by Douglas Fogle and a conversation between Laura Owens and the artist. The Los Angeles-based artist Jonas Wood (born 1977) creates paintings, drawings and prints, which mostly comprise intricate still lifes and interior domestic scenes. Throughout his compositions, the artist draws from art history, memory, and the people, objects and interiors that comprise his life. His work is boldly colored, detailed and graphic, and often features basketballs, ceramics and lush plants.

The players, the goals, the games, the scandals and the glory: the story of French football's chequered coming of age over the last 40 years.French football is an enigma: a puzzling jumble of brilliance and farce, flair and frailty, stunning success and abject failure. Its domestic league is mocked on social media as an uncompetitive 'Farmers League' and its clubs derided for underachieving in European competition. But France have reached four of the past seven men's World Cup finals, French players star week in, week out for the world's grandest clubs and the very best of French football - the roar of the Vélodrome, the glamour of the Parc des Princes, the shimmering brilliance of Zinédine Zidane, Éric Cantona and Kylian Mbappé - stands comparison with anything the sport has to offer. When it comes to scandal, meanwhile, the French are the best in the business, be it sensational match-fixing affairs, squabbles over sex tapes or meltdowns within the national squad. In this fascinating and exhaustively researched book, the first of its kind in the English language, Tom Williams brings to life French football's chequered coming of age over the last 40 years. He details how the starry-eyed romanticism that characterised the national team in the early 1980s gave way to an Italian-style pragmatism that would lead Les Bleus to the summit of the international game in the late 1990s. He delves into French football's rich history and explains the myriad ways - tactical, technical and cultural - in which France has shaped the game's evolution around the world.Featuring exclusive interviews with great figures of the French game such as Alain Giresse, Jean-Pierre Papin, Luis Fernandez, Guy Roux, Emmanuel Petit, Robert Pirès, Blaise Matuidi and Camille Abily, and with a cast of characters that also includes Michel Platini, Thierry Henry, Arsène Wenger, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Karim Benzema, Chris Waddle, Neymar Jr and Lionel Messi, it's a book no football fan will want to miss.

This Is Hardcore is Pulp's cry for help. A giant, sprawling, flawed masterpiece of a record, the 1998 album manages to tackle some of the most inappropriately grown-up issues of the day - fame, ageing, mortality, drugs, and pornography - and still come out crying and laughing on the other side. The subject of pornography dominates the record - from its controversial artwork to the images conjured up by songs like "Seductive Barry" and the title track - after Pulp's main man, Jarvis Cocker - who'd spent most of his teenage and adult life chasing celebrity, only to be cruelly disappointed when it finally arrived in spades - hit upon the grand notion of using pornography as a metaphor for fame. The album's commercial failure as a follow-up to the band's Britpop-defining, Different Class, also symbolizes a death knell for Britpop itself. Dark, right? Except just like Pulp themselves, Jane Savidge's book is playful and sometimes very funny indeed. Kicking off with an imaginary conversation between Jarvis Cocker and the people who run the Total Fame Solutions helpline, Savidge expertly guides us through the trials and tribulations of an album that begins with the so-called Michael Jackson Incident, when Cocker got up on stage at the 1996 Brit Awards and waggled his fully-clothed bum at the King of Pop. Pulp's This Is Hardcore may be a sleazy run through porn and mental demise, and an album that chronicles Cocker's continuing disillusionment with his newfound lot in life, but Savidge's book assesses the cultural and historical context of the album with insider knowledge and a sharp modern lens, ultimately making a case for it as one of the most important albums of the 1990s.
A fresh perspective on collaboration, collectivity, and conflict in the women's art movement of the 1970s

A new artist’s book, created by Gerhard Richter, that explores abstraction and chance in art and writing“The 100 Abstract Pictures shown here originated about five years ago, when I poured enamel paints on a fifty-by-fifty centimeter glass plate. The paints then flowed into one another without completely mixing. Thus they produced countless ephemeral abstract pictures, which I captured in photographs. These pictures are juxtaposed in the book with text formations that were generated at random.” —Gerhard Richter, 2023 With a career spanning more than sixty years, the renowned painter Gerhard Richter is one of the greatest artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Debuting alongside Richter's first exhibition at David Zwirner, featuring new abstract works created between 2016 and 2022, this book celebrates his continued dedication to experimentation and innovation. An artwork of its own, this intimate volume inspires both close looking and a beautiful interpretation of abstraction.

A comprehensive, illustrated account of the new generation of advanced tanks to emerge during the last 15 years of the Cold War, showcasing major improvements in armor protection, gunsights, and fire-control systems.Focusing on the technology of the period, author Steven J. Zaloga explains how the demands of a potential Cold War battlefield spurred the development of the 20th century's most advanced tanks. He considers the final versions of the Soviet T-72, T-64, and T-80 and assesses their strengths and weaknesses. He also explores how the failure of the US-German MBT-70 project led to America's development of the M1 Abrams tank, and to Germany's all-new Leopard II. The British development of the Challenger tank is also considered, as is the lesser-known Leclerc tank developed by France, the smallest and lightest of any of the western designs. Featuring superbly detailed new illustrations and many photos, this volume pinpoints the key technology of the era, including turbine engines, APFSDS ammunition, advanced armor and high-tech fire-control systems, and describes how the rival tanks compared in the final stretch of the Cold War arms race.
The Financial Times - Best books of 2022: Politics 'The prolific military chronicler and analyst Mark Galeotti has produced exactly the right book at the right time.' The Times A new history of how Putin and his conflicts have inexorably reshaped Russia, including his devastating invasion of Ukraine. Putin's Wars is a timely overview of the conflicts in which Russia has been involved since Vladimir Putin became prime minister and then president of Russia, from the First Chechen War to the two military incursions into Georgia, the annexation of Crimea and the eventual invasion of Ukraine itself. But it also looks more broadly at Putin's recreation of Russian military power and its expansion to include a range of new capabilities, from mercenaries to operatives in a relentless information war against Western powers. This is an engrossing strategic overview of the Russian military and the successes and failures on the battlefield. Thanks to Dr Galeotti's wide-ranging contacts throughout Russia, it is also peppered with anecdotes of military life, personal snapshots of conflicts, and an extraordinary collection of first-hand accounts from serving and retired Russian officers. Russia continues to dominate the news cycle throughout the Western world. There is no better time to understand how and why Putin has involved his armed forces in a variety of conflicts for over two decades.
