"The Forgotten Conflict: The Korean War's Enduring Impact on History" is a profound exploration of the Korean War, often overshadowed by World War II and the Vietnam War in global consciousness. This book delves into the historical, political, and social ramifications of a conflict that dramatically reshaped the Korean Peninsula and left a lasting imprint on international relations. The narrative commences with an in-depth examination of the geopolitical tensions following World War II that set the stage for the Korean War. It provides a detailed account of the war's origins, from the division of Korea at the 38th parallel to the escalation into a full-scale conflict involving the United States, China, the Soviet Union, and other nations under the United Nations banner. Each chapter meticulously explores key aspects of the war, including major military campaigns, the strategies employed by both the United Nations and Communist forces, and the war's impact on the soldiers and civilians involved. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of the military tactics and technological advancements used during the conflict and their implications for future warfare.A significant portion of the book is dedicated to examining the broader impact of the Korean War. This includes its influence on the Cold War dynamics, shaping policies like containment and the arms race, and its role in solidifying the division of Korea, leading to the ongoing tensions between North and South Korea."The Forgotten Conflict" also addresses the war's legacy in terms of its impact on international diplomacy, the evolution of the United Nations' role in global conflicts, and the development of U.S. foreign and military policy in the post-war era. The author delves into the social and cultural impacts of the war, both within Korea and internationally, including its representation in media and the collective memory of participating nations. This book is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the Korean War's complex legacy. It provides a nuanced and in-depth perspective on a pivotal moment in history that continues to influence global politics and international relations. "The Forgotten Conflict" offers a compelling argument for why the Korean War should be remembered and studied alongside the 20th century's other major conflicts.
This text consists of identifying literary elements with historical guidelines in eleven stories selected from three texts entitled Historia Secreta de Chile (Secret History of Chile) written by the Chilean Jorge Baradit. These narratives are framed in historical events that occurred in Chile between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. Such stories, with historical glimpses, make up the analysis, the purpose of which is to elucidate the author's narrative style and identify elements typical of literature. Consequently, the study is preceded by a review of the cultural-literary framework in which literary and artistic terms such as postmodernism, contemporary literature and historical fiction are examined in depth, considering theorists from the 20th century onwards. In addition, an approach has been made to the artistic and literary movement known as Freak Power, to which the author Jorge Baradit belongs. Finally, four axes of analysis have been determined: discursive reconstruction between person-fact-character, symbolism of fire, dehumanisation of the self and recusation of the dictator. These themes are transversal in the stories chosen for this analysis.

A detailed account of the intertwining political and military events of March and April 1974 in and around Lisbon. In March 1974, a climate of conspiracy reigned in Portugal. Premier Marcello Caetano, insisted on the continuation of the Portuguese presence in Africa and the wars being waged against the liberation movements in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea. Costa Gomes and Spínola, Portugal's two most senior generals, did not share this view. Spínola, with Costa Gomes's permission, had published Portugal e o Futuro (Portugal and the Future), a book that questioned the policy that had been followed until then, and caused a major political earthquake throughout Portugal and its colonies. At the same time, a movement of young captains prepared the overthrow of the regime. Tired of the war in Africa and the government's inability to solve the overseas problem, the conspirators drew up plans to end the dictatorship and establish a democratic regime in Portugal. A first coup attempt on 16 March 1974 was neutralized by government forces, but the second attempt on 25 April was an overwhelming success. In under 24 hours, the insurgents controlled the streets of the capital and Marcello Caetano was surrounded by rebel forces. With no options remaining, Caetano would hand power to General Spínola, who would become the new leader of the emerging regime. The people took to the streets of Lisbon to give red flowers to the soldiers, earning these events the name of 'The Carnation Revolution.'Carnation Revolution Volume 2: Coup in Portugal, April 1974 offers a detailed account of the intertwining political and military events of March and April 1974 in and around Lisbon as power swung irretrievably from a dictatorial government to a military intent on ending the colonial wars in Africa and restoring democracy to Portugal. This volume is illustrated throughout with original photographs and includes specially commissioned color artworks.

This work examines the CFE Treaty as a factor in Russia's foreign and security policy. Moscow showed amazing persistence in their relationship with the "cornerstone of European security." Their approach to the treaty was a genuine attempt to shape the security environment in Europe and the former USSR. The treaty also enabled the dismantling of large conventional forces as they returned from Eastern Europe and transitioned into the armies of the newly independent states of the former USSR. The CFE Treaty, though, proved ineffective at constraining the enlargement of NATO. Simultaneously, Moscow's foreign and security policy evolved from one that focused on the domestic development of the country to that of a more confident state reasserting itself as a great power. Drawing extensively on primary sources and analyses by Russian authors, this book employs two historical narratives, case studies, and a conceptual framework to show that while Moscow remained engaged with the CFE Treaty, undesired effects on Russia's national interests gradually accrued at the expense of desired ones, leading Vladimir Putin to withdraw Russia from the treaty as an act of de-coupling from the "collective West." This book is relevant to scholars and policymakers who want to understand Russia's approach to arms control as an element of military security.
Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter's welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience.

The !Xun & Khwe Art Project was developed in 1993 in a refugee camp in Schmidtsdrift, South Africa. After being party to the struggles for liberation from colonial rule, endangered groups of San people from Namibia and Angola were relocated there. They eventually found their final home in the self-governing South African community of Platfontein. The art of the !Xun and Khwe came about during the short period of transition from a traditional way of life to a modern, globalized society. This is what makes them unique. The collection of Hella Rabbethge-Schiller reveals the remarkable creativity and visual expressiveness of the artists. Despite otherwise depending on oral transmission, the San have captured their stories for posterity here in images charged with energy.

These two novellas demonstrate why Alain Robbe-Grillet, the leading practitioner and theorist of the noveau roman, is one of the most discussed and controversial writers of the post-war era. In La Maison de Rendez-vous, the master of the "new novel" creates a world of crime, intrigue, and passion dominated by Lady Ava's mysterious Blue Villa. Set in Hong Kong, the novella unfolds over the course of one evening, but the events of that night recur repeatedly, from the perspectives of different characters. Robbe-Grillet creates an unsettling work that challenges ideas about subjectivity and objectivity, fiction and fact, and the entire process of storytelling. A haunting, disorienting, and brilliantly constructed novel, Djinn is the story of a young man who joins a clandestine organization under the command of an alluring, androgynous American girl named Djinn. His search for the meaning of his mission and for possible clues to the identity of the mysterious Djinn, becomes a quest for his own identity in an ever-shifting time-space continuum.
How did a small, humble folk instrument become an American icon? How did the guitar come to represent freedom, the open road, protest and rebellion, the blues, youth, lost love, and sexuality? In this intensely personal memoir and informative history, National Public Radio commentator and essayist Tim Brookes recounts his quest to build the perfect guitar. Pairing up with a master artisan from the Green Mountains of Vermont, Brookes sees how a rare piece of cherry wood is hued, dovetailed, and worked on with saws, rasps, and files. As his prized instrument takes shape, Brookes also narrates the long and winding history of the guitar in the United States. Arriving with conquistadors and the colonists, the guitar has found itself in an extraordinary variety of hands: miners and society ladies, lumberjacks and presidents' wives. In time, the guitar became America's vehicle of self-expression, its modern soundtrack. "Guitar" is a rare glimpse of one man's search for music. It is sure to resonate with musicians and non-musicians alike.
