Based on extensive archival research in six countries and intensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the history of the village of Nkholongue on the eastern (Mozambican) shores of Lake Malawi from the time of its formation in the 19th century to the present day. The study uses Nkholongue as a microhistorical lens to examine such diverse topics as the slave trade, the spread of Islam, colonization, subsistence production, counter-insurgency, decolonization, civil war, ecotourism, and matriliny. Thereby, the book attempts to reflect as much as possible on the generalizability and (global) comparability of local findings by framing analyses in historiographical discussions that aim to go beyond the regional or national level. Although the chapters of the book deal with very different topics, they are united by a common interest in the social history of rural Africa in the longue durée. Contrary to persistent clichés of rural inertia in Africa, the book as a whole underscores the profound changeability of social conditions and relations in Nkholongue over the years and highlights how people's room for maneuver kept changing as a result of the Winds of History, the frequent and often violent ruptures brought to the village from outside.
"A study of the stalled/non-existent process of legally reckoning with the 1965 state-sponsored genocide in Indonesia"--
Poverty and inequality have pervaded British society to this day, but this has not always been self-evident to contemporaries - popular understandings have depended on existing knowledge. Inequality Knowledge provides the first detailed history of the numbers about the gap between rich and poor. It shows how they were produced, used, and suppressed at times, and how activists, scientists, and journalists eventually wrestled control over the figures from the state. The book traces the making and the politics of statistical knowledge about economic inequality in the United Kingdom from the post-war era to the 1990s. What kind of knowledge was available to contemporaries about socio-economic disparities in Britain and how they evolved over time? How was this knowledge produced and by whom? What did policy makers and civil servants know about the extent of poverty and inequality in British society and to what extent did they take the distributional impact of their social and fiscal policies into account? Far from just a technical matter, inequality knowledge had far-reaching implications for key debates and the wider political culture in contemporary Britain. Historicizing inequality knowledge speaks to a long tradition of historical research about social class divisions and cultural representations of economic disparities in twentieth-century Britain.
Dwight Eisenhower's encounter with the Holocaust altered how he understood the Second World War and shaped how he led the United States and the Western Alliance during the Cold War. This book is the first to blend scholarship on Eisenhower, World War II, and the Holocaust together, constructing a narrative that offers new insights into all three, all while uncovering the story of how he became among the first to vow that such atrocities would never again be allowed to happen. From the moment he stepped foot in the concentration camp Ohrdruf in April 1945, defeating Nazi Germany took on a moral hue for Eisenhower that had largely been absent before. It spurred the belief that totalitarianism in all its forms needed to be confronted. This conviction shaped his presidency and solidified American engagement in the postwar world. Putting these pieces of the story together alters how we view and understand the second half of the twentieth century.

On 4 May 1970, at Kent State University in Ohio, political fires that had been burning across America during the 1960s exploded. Antiwar protestors wearing bell-bottom jeans and long hair hurled taunts and rocks at another group of young American-National Guardsman sporting gas masks and rifles. At half past noon, violence unfolded at chaotic speed, as guardsmen-many of whom had joined the Guard to escape the draft-opened fire on the students. Two reductive narratives ensued: one, that lethal state violence targeted Americans who spoke their minds; the other, that law enforcement gave troublemakers the comeuppance they deserved. For over fifty years, little middle ground has been found due to incomplete and sometimes contradictory evidence.Kent State meticulously re-creates the divided cultural landscape of America during the Vietnam War and heightened popular anxieties around the country. On college campuses, teach-ins, sit-down strikes and demonstrations exposed the growing rift between the left and the right. Many students opposed the war as unnecessary and unjust and were uneasy over poor and working-class kids drafted and sent to Vietnam in their place. Some developed a hatred for the military, the police and everything associated with authority, while others resolved to uphold law and order at any cost.Focusing on the thirteen victims of the Kent State shooting and a painstaking reconstruction on the days surrounding it, historian Brian VanDeMark draws on crucial new research and interviews-including, for the first time, the perspective of guardsmen who were there. The result is a complete reckoning with the tragedy that marked the end of the sixties.

The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The warbegan on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the borderand rebellions in South Korea.North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by theUnited States and allied countries. The fighting ended with an armistice on 27 July 1953.In 1910, ImperialJapan annexed Korea, where it ruled for 35 years until its surrender at the end of World War II on 15August 1945. The United States and the Soviet Union divided Korea along the 38th parallel into twozones of occupation. The Soviets administered the northern zone, and the Americans administeredthe southern zone. In 1948, because of Cold War tensions, the occupation zones became two sovereignstates. A communist state, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, was established in the northunder the totalitarian rule of Kim Il Sung, while a capitalist state, the Republic of Korea, was establishedin the south under the autocratic leadership of Syngman Rhee. Both governments claimed to be thesole legitimate government of all of Korea, and neither accepted the border as permanent.
A tour de force of prose style, Holler is poet Danielle Chapman's moving and provocative portrait of her Southern, military childhood and an unflinching reckoning with what such an inheritance means now. A crucial book for anyone with a racial conscience in today's divided America, Holler is one woman's account of "the miraculous catastrophe" of being human in an inhumane world, and proof that it's possible to fully face who we are while searching for forgiveness.
Chart the evolution of Wateridge's style from his earlier realism and complex multi-figure compositions to his more solitary and expressive works by exploring this book's 80 paintings and works on paper made between 2019 and 2022.Uncertain Swimmer is the second monograph on the work of British artist Jonathan Wateridge (b. 1972, Lusaka, Zambia), presenting around eighty paintings and works on paper made between 2019 and 2022. Following on from the bodies of work Enclave and Expatria (2016-18), Uncertain Swimmer develops the artist's interest in modes of representation and the legacies of twentieth-century modernist painting through a visual and social exploration of the motif of the pool, depicting swimmers and sunbathers, often by night. Far from being an escapist environment of aspiration and privilege, Wateridge imbues the pool with a disquieting atmosphere, creating a cumulative feeling of unease and ennui among those present, now seemingly unsure of their world. The publication charts a marked evolution in the artist's style from the realism of his earlier paintings with complex multi-figure compositions to more solitary, gestural, and expressive works. His masterly application of paint takes new forms in the beautiful, curious, and often haunting paintings and works on paper showcased here. Art historian and curator Marco Livingstone's essay considers the change from Wateridge's naturalistic paintings to the flattened, reduced shapes, forms, and lines of the modernism- and abstraction-infused pieces he is making today. Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, and Paul Cézanne are among numerous art historical influences cited by Livingstone, who ruminates on the identity of the people in Wateridge's portraits and the mercurial spaces they occupy, examining how Wateridge's current critical preoccupations have transitioned from the autobiographical to more formal concerns. In the featured conversation between Wateridge and fellow painter Caroline Walker, the two artists discuss their overlapping experiences studying painting at Glasgow, as well as Wateridge's fourteen-year break from painting until 2005. He eventually returned to the medium when he realized it excited him more than anything else. Wateridge elaborates on his fascinating painting process, staging shoots in studios with hired actors and using elements from the photographs in the paintings, often over a period of years. On his canvases, he will scrape back the paint and reapply it, frequently taking pictures of the paintings in their various stages; he will then print the photographs and draw over them to continue working out what he will do with the final paintings. For Wateridge, a painting works when it stops failing, and he embraces unforeseen conclusions.
Published to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Tet Offensive, this new paperback edition brings back into print a book that became an essential source for a 2006 study of the battle by the U.S. Army s Center of Military History. It takes a critical look at what went wrong in early 1968 during one of the first engagements of Tet, when a U.S. infantry battalion was ordered to attack a large North Vietnamese force near Hue City without air or artillery support. The tragic military foul-up resulted in over 60 percent casualties for the 2d Battalion, 12th Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, when the soldiers were surrounded by the enemy and began running out of ammunition. The bold decision by battalion commander Lt. Col. Richard Sweet to break out with his remaining soldiers under cover of darkness saved this encirclement from being a total disaster. Author Charles Krohn, the unit s intelligence officer at the time, provides a much-needed analysis of what took place and fills his account with details that have been confirmed as factual by other survivors. Krohn examines the battalion s involvement in two other major attacks for lessons learned when vital systems break down lessons, he says, that are timeless and applicable anywhere. This book is published in cooperation with the Association of the United States Army.
Explores the significance of postwar German representations of violence in other places and times.
Awarded the Silver Medal by the Military Writers Society of America. Sent into the deadly Central Highlands of Vietnam, the true story of my dad and his fellow soldiers of the 1st Air Cavalry Division. Twenty-year-old Will Bowe was living on his family's farm, and the military build-up had just begun when he was drafted in 1965. The impossibly young men of his company would be trained in the new airmobile infantry and become "skytroopers," flying into the jungle battlefield by helicopter, where they would learn what "search and destroy" meant and face the reality of this new war. Based on formerly classified staff journals, situation reports, and military maps, our story follows Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry as they march through rice fields, search villages, and climb jungle-covered mountains. Our story also features many of the photographs and letters my dad sent home from Vietnam's most remote valleys and outposts. Written under the most austere conditions, his dispatches were often scribbled in haste before another mission or by flashlight under a poncho in the rain. They would travel over eight thousand miles across the ocean to be placed in a mailbox that stood across from a farmhouse along a rural county road in Wisconsin. Many who served in my dad's company were interviewed for this story, as were many family members and friends of the fallen. Their accounts recall much of the humor and friendship they shared, along with the sadness and tragedy that would accompany a year spent in Vietnam. Now these letters, photos, reports, and personal accounts have been brought together to tell of one infantry company's war journey, from their training at Fort Carson to their historic voyage across the sea, their first steps into the dark highland jungles, their many battles fought together, and eventually, their final patrol.
The De Havilland Mosquito and the Avro Lancaster were two of the most legendary British aircraft of all time, eclipsed only by the immortal Supermarine Spitfire in fame. They flew for the first time six weeks apart, on 25.11.1940 the Mosquito and on 9.1.1941 the Lancaster and they were both powered by the same RR Merlin engine. Commencing bomber operations over Europe in the spring of 1942, they were also produced in similar numbers (7,781 Mosquitoes and 7,377 Lancasters). Still, they served two different design philosophies: the mainstream philosophy of a slow, heavily armed bomber with a devastating payload (the mighty Lancaster), versus the alternative one of a very fast and unarmed combat aircraft made of wood, with many applications (the compact and multi-role Mosquito). A crucial question inevitably arises: which of the two was more cost/effective?
Fifty years on from her legendary kidnapping, the definitive novel has finally been written. On the night that Patty Hearst was kidnapped in 1974, journalist Roger D. Rapoport was a short drive away in his Bay Area home. He quickly became one of the primary reporters covering the saga as it unfolded in real time. His reporting gave local and national readers a window into one of the most bizarre and polarizing crimes in U.S. history. Now, fifty years later, he has written a novel that draws us back to that time. In this compelling new book, he explores alternative theories of the crime and delves into the complex psychology of many of the key actors in a drama that kept the country riveted. Using the techniques of fiction, Rapoport gives voice to much of the story that fell outside of the bounds of journalistic coverage. With Rapoport's wry sensibility and insider knowledge Searching for Patty Hearst is able to go beyond the tabloid headlines to tell the story in depth. Why did Patty participate in the kidnapping of a high school student hours before six of the SLA kidnappers were killed in a firefight with the Los Angeles police department? Did celebrity coroner Thomas Noguchi mishandle the autopsies of six SLA victims? Why did Patty's lawyers dump her fiance Steve Weed as a key witness at her trial at the last minute?Does the city of Stockholm having anything to do with this? It's often said that fiction can offer insights into the truth that reporting can't. If that is the case, the story of Patty Hearst, the SLA, and the kidnapping that carved them into the American psyche just may be told here for the first time.--James Sparling
Two of the most important voices in art history discuss their intellectual foundations, the changing role of criticism, and the possibilities for artistic practice today. In Exit Interview, the prominent art critics and historians Hal Foster and Benjamin Buchloh discuss their intellectual foundations and the projects they've worked on together, from October magazine to Art Since 1900. Buchloh candidly addresses his successes, critical significance, and unexplored avenues in art history, providing a unique window into his motivations and experiences. With a powerful postface by Buchloh, Exit Interview builds from biography and anecdote to important reflection on one’s critical life as a whole.
"In May 1968, while serving in Vietnam, Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez led the rescue of a reconnaissance team surrounded by hundreds of enemy soldiers. He saved the lives of at least eight of his comrades that day in a remarkable act of valor that left him permanently disabled. Awarded the Medal of Honor after a yearslong campaign, Benavidez became a highly sought-after public speaker, a living symbol of military heroism, and one of the country's most prominent Latinos."--Provided by publisher.
