A beautifully illustrated book-length publication on the contemporary artist and Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Garrett Bradley, whose quietly devastating work blurs the space between fact and fiction.Garrett Bradley works across narrative, documentary, and experimental modes of filmmaking to address themes such as race, class, familial relationships, social justice, and cultural histories in the United States. Her collaborative and research-based approach to filmmaking is often inspired by the real-life stories of her protagonists. This book explores Bradley’s work through the lens of devotion and features conversations with the artist and contributions from the likes of Ashley Clark, Arthur Jafa, Joy James, Tyler Mitchell, Kevin Quashie, and Claudia Rankine. This is the first volume in a new series of readers copublished with Lisson Gallery entitled Re:, which will respond to a number of its artists and themes past and present.Adopting archival material alongside newly shot footage, Bradley’s films exist simultaneously in the past, present, and future, not only disrupting our perception of time, but also breaking down our preconceived ideas about objectivity, perspective, and truth-telling. These narratives unfold naturally in both feature-length and short form, revealing a multitude of individual and collective stories. The social, economic, and racial politics of everyday life—its joys, pleasures, and pains—are lyrically and intimately rendered on screen.
The first exhibition catalogue of the acclaimed queer, feminist curatorial initiative Ridykeulous, marking the occasion of their first institutional presentation in Europe at Nottingham Contemporary.Founded in 2005, Ridykeulous mounts exhibitions and events primarily concerned with queer and feminist art. This publication will be the first exhibition catalogue by Ridykeulous, joined by Sam Roeck, and will accompany the fall 2023 exhibition Ridykes’ Cavern of Fine Inverted Wines and Deviant Videos at Nottingham Contemporary. With newly commissioned texts by curator Lia Gangitano and Alexandro Segade of the artist collective My Barbarian, the catalogue will be complemented by a conversation between Ridykeulous members Nicole Eisenman, A.L. Steiner and Sam Roeck, providing insights into the collective's thinking, politics, behind-the-scenes notations, and methods of exploration, as well as an introduction by Nottingham Contemporary's Chief Curator Nicole Yip.Using humor to critique the art world and heteropatriarchal culture at-large, Ridykeulous often reinvents language to reflect their sensibilities and concerns—composing communiqués, screeds, and diatribes across various media. The exhibition features an intergenerational mix of 30 contemporary visual artists working across film, video installation, sculpture, and performance. Playfully proposing queer fabulosity as a critical intervention in the capitalist spectacle, the exhibition seeks to erode the secondary positioning of LGBTQ+ art and artists as “alternative.” Designed by the Zürich-based Studio Marie Lusa, the publication will evoke the textual feeling of a zine, with over 100 full-color and black-and-white image plates.
An arresting and visually rich monograph of the work of contemporary artist Sanya Kantarovsky.Forlorn and spiritually bankrupt, tender or abject—the subjects in the figurative paintings of Sanya Kantarovsky (b. 1982) convey an uneasy, dark humor. They seem trapped in a precarious inner monologue, or under the spell of mundane lived experience. Sanya Kantarovsky: Selected Works 2010-2024 is published with the support of Aspen Art Museum, following Kantarovsky's exhibition A Solid House (2022). It includes more than 140 full-color image plates and spans the artist's oeuvre, focusing on his most recent output since his previous monograph No Joke (2014).The publication also includes a conversation between Kantarovsky and art historian Isabelle Graw, as well as essays by the psychoanalyst and writer Jamieson Webster and art historian George Baker.

'For the past half-century Frank Field has been an outstanding parliamentarian, social reformer and champion of the disadvantaged. He joined the Labour Party at the age of 16 and was expelled from it at the age of 78.' -Brian & Rachel Griffiths'Frank Field is one of the most important, iconoclastic and remarkable politicians of his generation. This book is told with his Christian belief, regrets and all, and his trademark searing honesty.' -Nick TimminsIn the increasingly dirty world of British politics, one man has stood out for unimpeachable integrity - the former Labour Member of Parliament for Birkenhead, Frank Field. In this touching but also profound memoir, the veteran former Labour MP and social campaigner Frank Field reveals the poverty of his own childhood and the deep and lasting effect of his Christian socialism. Field has spent his life fighting poverty in Britain, and has found allies on all sides of the political spectrum. In this book, Field talk about his activism, his foundational work with the Child Poverty Action Group and his work passing legislation for the Minimum Living Wage. He explains why he has dedicated his life to speaking out against the corruption of greed and power and writes with great alacrity about the titans of his political age, including Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher. In the end, Field's zeal for reform was too much for too many people, and, in 2015, he was deselected by his own local Labour party. Politics, Poverty and Belief is an implicit indictment of modern British politics - the world of cash for questions, Partygate and all the rest - in which the poor get poorer and the rich get richer.

The book seeks to correct the anomaly in the theology of prayer among contemporary Christians who have replaced hard work with prayer thereby presenting God as a magician. The book reveals that everything should be subjected to reasonable faith to avoid extreme nihilism and rationalism. There's no conflict between faith and reason as the duo compliment each other. There is the need to strike a balance between Faith, prayer and hard work through rational reasoning.

This is a book about survival. It is a book about a 21 year old Army Scout pilot shot down during the Vietnam War on a Scout mission well inside North Vietnamese controlled territory in Cambodia. He along with his two crew members, his Observer and his Door Gunner, were shot down on 10 March 1971.They were hit by a B-40 Rocket Propelled Grenade or an SA-7 missile. The pilot, WO1 Craig (Jeff) Houser immediately lost engine power and then realized he had no cyclic control. The burning aircraft passed over a river and crashed into the trees above the riverbank, exploded on impact, and then fell into the river and sank.He never saw his two crew members: Observer SP4 Robert T. Kiser or Door Gunner Sgt. Curtis R. Smoot again. After almost drowning, Houser managed to somehow get out of the wreckage of the aircraft on the bottom of the river and swim to the river bank. This was then the beginning of what turned out to be four days of Escape and Evasion. He was burned and blinded (totally blinded in one eye and loss of most of his vision in the other) by the crash. Most of his survival equipment was now on the bottom of the river. He had no food, no medicine, and no water. It was now the dry season in this area of Southeast Asia and other than the river he crashed in, all the intermittent streams and creeks were dried up.First he had to keep from being captured, that was the primary goal.It is absolutely a true story of survival against all odds.
Watson har sidenhen sagt, at Franklin burde have fået prisen.
The history of the relationships intertwined by the Taizé Community amongst Christians of Eastern European countries in the second half of the last century has not yet been written. Yet it is a fundamental chapter for understanding the unique international irradiation of the community. The encounter with the different faces of a Christian youth beyond the Iron Curtain who in Taizé experienced an European space at once unified, will become in particular one of the main directions of investment of the community from the early 1960s. It is on this story that the contributions of this volume intend to throw a first light, relying on a completely unpublished documentation and on the witnesses of many protagonists involved in the construction of this unique continental and ecumenical network.
The nursing process generally is understood as key element of professional nursing care in Germany. This study follows this argument back to the introduction of the nursing process in the 1970s and 1980s. At that time, the German healthcare system underwent dramatic changes and economic reorganization, which can be understood as the emergence of the neoliberal rationale in Germany. The argument of cost explosion was used to restructure hospitals into enterprises that were to operate based on the logic of the market. Its cybernetic logic made the nursing process an ideal instrument to restructure nursing care. Perspectives of governmentality and critical accounting reveal the nursing process as an accounting tool which has made nursing calculable. And while German nurses valued its potential for professionalization, the findings suggest that a newly constituted accountable nursing vocation can instead be considered as de-professionalizing.
This new reading of Erving Goffman's work shows how his analyses of everyday life portray interactional analogs of larger Cold War realities. Rather than viewing Goffman as microsociologist of the mundane, he is shown to be a powerful social theorist of the American Cold War.

China has become the powerhouse of the world economy, its incredible boom overseen by the elite members of the secretive and all-powerful communist party. But since the election of Xi Jinping as General Secretary, life at the top in China has changed. Under the guise of a corruption crackdown, which has seen his rivals imprisoned, Xi Jinping has been quietly building one of the most powerful leaderships modern China has ever seen. In CEO China, the noted China expert Kerry Brown reveals the hidden story of the rise of the man dubbed the 'Chinese Godfather'. Brown investigates his relationship with his revolutionary father, who was expelled by Mao during the Cultural Revolution, his business dealings and allegiances in China's regional power struggles and his role in the internal battle raging between the old men of the Deng era and the new super-rich 'princelings'. Xi Jinping's China is powerful, aggressive and single-minded and this book will become a must-read for the Western world.
From her magical childhood being reared in a family of travelling entertainers to building a career as a music star, Sandy recounts the highs - and lows - of a lifetime in music.
Amidst the turmoil of World War II, Zurich was an enclave where modern art held its ground. In the aftermath, Concrete Art, design, and the "Swiss Style" became emblematic of a modern Switzerland. Influenced by De Stijl, Russian Constructivism, and the Bauhaus, the Zurich Concretists aimed to transform society through aesthetics, design, and architecture. Circle! Square! Progress! brings together the main protagonists Max Bill, Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg, and Richard Paul Lohse along with precursors such as Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Georges Vantongerloo, Theo van Doesburg, and Anton Stankowski. Contemporary witnesses, artist Peter Fischli and curator Bice Curiger, add their unique perspectives. The volume vividly describes the Zurich Concretist's conections with European avant-garde, delving into the hostilities, scandals, and their ultimately successful struggle for recognition against the backdrop of the 20th century's upheavals.
The term "performance," as used in 1955 by the British philosopher of language John L. Austin, refers to processual, "performative" aspects that take center-stage instead of rigid states and fixed norms. It has found its way into the most diverse areas of science and technology and has recently also appeared in the architectural context. Performance has long been a recurring topic also in the design and research work of Zurich-based architecture firm Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin (EMI). This is particularly visible in the award-winning design for a tourist infrastructure on the eastern ridge of the Jungfrau in the Swiss Alps (2012), in the temporary installation Anthropomorphic Form for the Swiss Art Awards (2019), and in the residential building on Stampfenbachstrasse in Zurich (2022). Their own work is a catalyst for EMI's deeper engagement with performance, now set forth in this book. Texts by the firm's founding partner Elli Mosayebi and by Joseph Schwartz, Laurent Stalder, and Nina Zschocke, all of whom also teach at ETH Zürich's Department of Architecture, as well as artistic and documentary photographs, plans, and drawings, illuminate the phenomenon from the different perspectives of architectural practice, theory of architecture, and structural engineering.
