In the minutes, one will find local office holders being appointed and/or qualified, including clerks of courts, registers of deeds, sheriffs, coroners, etc. The court controlled the levying and expenditure of local taxes, matters dealing with public buildings, roads, bridges, etc. were handled by this court and it also selected and summoned juries. Among the other responsibilities of the court found in its minutes were licenses granted to operaters of taverns, as well as deeds and bills of sale being acknowledged by the grantors. The court oversaw a wide range of matters involving estates, including probate of wills, settlements of estates, and appraisements as well as matters dealing with bastardy, and many other valuable bits of information.

From the award-winning Southern lifestyle magazine Garden & Gun comes this rich collection of some of the South's most notable women. For too long, the Southern woman has been synonymous with the Southern belle, a ?moonlight and magnolias? myth that gets nowhere close to describing the strong, richly diverse women who have thrived because of?and in some cases, despite of?the South. No more. Garden & Gun's Southern Women: More than 100 Stories of Trail Blazers, Visionaries, and Icons obliterates that stereotype by sharing the stories of more than 100 of the region's brilliant women, groundbreakers who have by turns embraced the South's proud traditions and overcome its equally pervasive barriers and challenges. Through interviews, essays, photos, and illustrations these remarkable chefs, musicians, actors, writers, artists, entrepreneurs, designers, and public servants will offer a dynamic portrait of who the Southern woman is now. The voices of bona fide icons such as Sissy Spacek, Leah Chase, and Loretta Lynn join those whose stories for too long have been overlooked or underestimated, from the pioneering Texas rancher Minnie Lou Bradley to the Gee's Bend, Alabama, quilter Mary Margaret Pettway?all visionaries who have left their indelible mark not just on Southern culture, but on America itself. By reading these stories of triumph, grit, and grace, the ties that bind the sisterhood of Southern women emerge: an unflinching resilience and resourcefulness, an inherent love of the land, a singular style and wit. And while the wisdom shared may be rooted in the Southern experience, the universal themes are sure to resonate beyond the Mason-Dixon.
By: W.P.A., Orig. Pub. 1941, reprinted 2019, 152 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #0-89308-972-9.Obion County was created in 1823 from the Western District. It sits in the north-western corner of the state boarding the Kentucky and Missouri. The court was held 4 times a year and heard such cases of assault, batteries, trespass, all breaches of the peace. They held authority of administration in intestate estates and orphans, granted license to build water grist mills, to taverns and ordinaries, and to build and maintain public ferries. The court also appointed Constables and Overseers of Roads, and named the men who lived within the bounds to keep them in repair, as well as recommending three persons to the Governor, of whom one was made Sheriff, as well as imposing taxes for roads, courthouses and goals, appointed all county officers, civil and military, all lists of Jurors and probates of Wills. These records are extremely valuable for the researcher, especially if an ancestor died intestate (without a will), and in some instances a person may be listed in these court records and nowhere else in the county records.

Lisa studied abroad in college, and for their honeymoon Lisa and her husband toured Europe. During her travels to Malta, an older man tried to give her some advice based on his own experience living on the island since he was a young boy. She was not sure if she should talk to the stranger but was interested in his advice. When traveling to some places she was wary to talk to locals because she was afraid that they weren't being genuine. Through her travels, Lisa learned how much locals had to share with tourists. Lisa created the Greater Than a Tourist book series to help connect people with locals. A topic that locals are very passionate about sharing.
