Orlando is one of the top travel destinations on the planet, now welcoming over 60 million people annually. Most of these visitors come on vacation to experience the world-famous theme parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. But many of them venture no farther than International Drive, never discovering the secret face of the City Beautiful and the many hidden gems within the Milk District, Lake Nona, Winter Park, Maitland, Kissimmee, Altamonte Springs and other areas that reveal so much more than meets the ears. Authors John Brown and Joshua Ginsberg have teamed up to take curious travelers on an adventure that begins where the monorail ends. Join them for a ride down a forgotten brick highway, on a citrus safari in a monster truck bus and in a kayak through bioluminescent algae at night. Find your way through a library into a swank urban speakeasy, have coffee with a stuffed ostrich at a curio shop, pay your respects at the grave of painter Bob Ross, catch a film festival (and maybe a ghost) at the Enzian theater, decode the binary message on the wall of a parking garage and let the spirits be your guide at the "Psychic Capital of the World." From unique monuments and artworks to natural wonders, modern ruins, NASCAR racing and death metal, Secret Orlando is your ticket to discovering the weird, wild and wonderful that awaits you beyond what's listed in the typical travel blogs, brochures and hotel lobby rack cards.

In this book, you'll not only read about some of Louisville's oldest existing institutions and the lives involved in them, but you'll also encounter a few unusual stories to help illustrate what life was like in Louisville long before the city we know today. You'll learn about the early days of the Kentucky Derby and about the first-ever bottled bourbon. You'll meet the family behind the city's oldest operating funeral service, hear the stories behind Louisville's oldest parks and cemeteries (and how sometimes they overlapped). You'll get the muddled history of the Old Fashioned cocktail, discover the story of a thrilling duel in a cemetery and learn about a dairyman who was the victim of a robbery gone bad. Ultimately, what Oldest Louisville aims to present is not only a bit of historical insight into Louisville's history and culture, but also entertaining stories to put that history into a measure of human context. Enjoy the walk through time.

WID has two appendices, one with thorough information on congresspersons and committees, and the second with governors and embassies.

Wanderlust much? Author Jim Duffy of Secrets of the Eastern Shore is here to help.In his fifth book devoted to travel, history, and culture on the storied Delmarva Peninsula, Duffy has created a 276-page idea factory with hundreds of annual events and cool destinations. "Shore Fun" will serve for years to come as your roadmap to discovering beauty, joy, culture, weirdness, history, and good times while wandering one of the nation's great travel destinations--the storied peninsula that includes the state of Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia and lies between the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. The book unfolds into two sections. The first connects you with more than 150 annual events, organized by the four seasons. These range from can't-miss classics like Ocean City Springfest, the Chincoteague Pony Swim, Chestertown's Downrigging Weekend, and the Delaware State Fair to idiosyncratic gems like the Apple Scrapple Festival, the Muskrat Skinning World Championship, and the Berlin Bathtub Races. The second section delivers what-you-need-to-know info on 125 different destinations, organized into five geographic regions. Some of those destinations are one-stop affairs--a fabulous little museum here, or a breathtaking natural attraction there. Others describe multiple fun things to see and do in itineraries devoted to small towns, beach resorts, remote islands, and scenic backroads.Everything that makes the peninsula special is here, at your fingertips. That makes "Shore Fun" different from Duffy's earlier books. His two popular collections of "Eastern Shore Road Trips" and his collection of "Tubman Travels" contain extended essays that are filled with stories from days gone by and insights into local culture. Those books don't strive to be comprehensive travel guides to the whole region. This one does. It's focused on delivering quick-hitting, what-you-need-to-know descriptions so you can decide which of Delmarva's countless travel options fit your priorities and timetable. So ... another weekend is approaching. Does the weather look good? Are you feeling the itch to let loose, hit the road, and make some new discoveries? "Shore Fun" is going to help you make the most of your Delmarva travels, from down in Cape Charles to up in Elkton and from oceanfront sunrises to Chesapeake sunsets.Good times and fun finds await around just about every bend of this glorious peninsula, so start flipping through these pages to find your next fun adventure. Happy wandering!

Every factory ever built was because someone had a dream. Every business ever started was a person taking a risk. Every school ever built was done so with the intention of making a brighter future. Every church at one point was a testimony of someone's faith. Every structure someone ever called home was once a shelter from the often intimidating outside world. Whether that person needed shelter from the weather, shelter from the dark, or shelter from other people, those four walls provided solace. Often, dreams die, risks lead to failure, faith waivers, and people outgrow their four walls or lose them to death, poverty, or the very weather from which they are meant to provide shelter. Abandoned North Alabama: Where the Stories Ended photographer Robert Posey explores structures that have outlived the ambitions they were built to serve. Learn about businesses that failed even after decades of thriving. Walk through houses showing a time when racism was publicly accepted, phones were attached to walls, and children's toys, left discarded, had no place for batteries. Join along on this journey to resurrect the stories that once filled these forgotten structures before nature erases forever their tales of the past.

Winter Park, a vibrant city in Central Florida reminiscent of a New England village, witnessed the following exciting changes in the 1960s: the building of a new city hall, the establishment of the Sidewalk Arts Festival, and construction of shopping centers and apartment buildings. Beloved businesses, such as the Yum Yum Shoppe and Café del Prado, thrived on the downtown strip of Park Avenue. The Langford Hotel welcomed glamorous guests and hosted beauty pageants. Winter Park promoted children's activities, from Easter egg hunts in Central Park to citywide athletic competitions, while racial integration emerged in its recreational facilities. The city's popular mayor, Ed Gurney, rose to become a US representative and then a US senator.

"Boonesborough is one of America's most historic and scenic places. In the spring of 1775, legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone led a party of settlers to this place on the Kentucky River. They erected Fort Boonesborough as headquarters for Richard Henderson's Transylvania Company. The fort withstood a siege by 400 Shawnee Indians in 1778. Two years before, the Indians had captured the daughters of Boone and Richard Callaway; Boone himself led a party on the girls' successful rescue. The year 1779 saw establishment of the Boonesborough ferry, the first in Kentucky, which continued in operation until replaced by a bridge in 1931. In 1905, the US Army Corps of Engineers erected a lock and dam at Boonesborough. A breaching of the dam uncovered a luxurious sand beach that became a beacon for visitors and a focal point on the Boonesboro Beach Resort, established in 1909. The resort was replaced by Fort Boonesborough State Park in 1965. That same decade saw Fess Parker bring Boonesborough to national recognition with his popular television series Daniel Boone. With the opening of the replica fort at the state park, visitors now have an opportunity to take a walk back in history -- a journey to the western frontier of 1775. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today."--

Author Lee Lancaster unearths the delectable history and classic recipes of the Peach State's top vegetable. The Vidalia onion may be small, but it's as sweet as an onion can be, and it means big business for Georgia, too. Officially christened the Georgia State Vegetable in 1990, it can only be grown in Southeast Georgia. Once sold mostly off a truck tailgate, Vidalia onions now produce an annual crop worth $150 million. And after years of perfecting and fighting off posers and pirates, Vidalia onions are presented as gifts to presidents, governors, close friends and relatives. They are hand planted and handpicked but worth all the trouble to produce the King of the Onion Rings. They are so good, they have their own Vidalia Onion Museum, mascot named Yumion, and a Vidalia Onion Hall of Fame. Vidalia, there's just something about that name.

When describing the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site in a 1945 interview, Tennessee historian Samuel Cole Williams said, "No other site in Tennessee compares with this in its historic interest." Five original structures, six reconstructed and restored buildings, a limestone cave, and a small family cemetery bear witness today of the rich and diverse history of Tipton-Haynes, which spans the Pleistocene Ice Age, Native American settlement, Tennessee statehood, the American Civil War, and the Great Depression. During the latter half the 20th century, the Tennessee Historical Commission and the nonprofit Tipton-Haynes Historical Association, Inc., worked to establish and preserve the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site. Collected photographs of these efforts and achievements have been hidden away in the site's archives for decades to only now be viewed by the public.
