To examine the origins, characteristics, and outcomes of resilient governance with Chinese characteristics, this open access book takes Guangzhou, a typical Chinese city from 1990 to 2015, as an example. Through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and the collection of secondary data, this book finds that (1) the institutional context can be described as an authoritarian land-oriented pro-growth regime; (2) there are three phases with different patterns of governance: the Primitive Market Phase (1990¿1998), the Pure Government Phase (1998¿2006) and the Multiple Players Phase (2006¿2015); (3) redevelopment can serve as a model of resilient governance because it changes in time in a dynamic environment to maximise economic growth; (4) an authoritarian land-oriented pro-growth regime is the key to support such a resilient governance model.This is an open access book.

On November 11, 1923, the fifth anniversary of the Armistice, the memorial for the Fredericton war dead was unveiled. Popular perception is that the process was a simple one: a list of all of those who died in the Great War was compiled and inscribed on the monument. In reality, the truth is much more complex. In Perpetuity brings together the biographies of 110 soldiers from the Fredericton area who died from service during the First World War. The product of an inquiry-based learning project led by social studies teacher James Rowinski, the biographies shed light on the lives of the soldiers, the conditions they experienced during their service, and the process of commemoration following the war. The book includes the biographies of four soldiers that students argue should have been included on the official memorial, including Lieutenant Charles Blair who died by suicide in 1920 and would now likely be recognised as suffering from PTSD. A correction and supplement to official memory, In Perpetuity preserves the memory of Fredericton's war dead -- those who both were included and excluded from the official record. This book presents a multidimensional perspective on the interlinkage between human development, community characteristics and public service delivery with special reference to India. The chapters in the book analyze the influence of public service delivery on human development from neo-classical as well as Marxian point of view. This book scrutinizes the frequently ignored agency of Global South sub-national actors in their interactions with China, using a multidisciplinary approach and eleven case studies. Contributors examine China's presence in the Global South on a country-by-country basis, analyzing how various non-state and sub-state actors are responding to the rise of China and whether they are attracted by the cooperation models that China proposes or deterred by its new assertiveness. Contributions cover diverse and heterogeneous geographies of the Global South, ranging from Papua-New Guinea to Argentina and from Madagascar to the Russian Far East. Examining such diverse cases, contributors focus on two interrelated questions: What is the actual economic, political, and social impact of China's growing presence in the Global South? And, critically, how do the citizens of the Global South understand and interpret China's rise? Taken together, the case studies develop a comprehensive picture of a complex and sometimes problematic process of China's inclusion into the economic, social, and political realities of the Global South.This book identifies and fills the gaps in the existing literature on China's rise by offering a nuanced perspective on China's relations with the countries of the Global South that captures such variables as social context, intersubjective meanings, and identities. This book is a collection of writings by multiple members of the UNITAR Hiroshima Fellowship for Afghanistan (AF), covering the period since the inception of the Fellowship in 2003, till the present day. The imperative to share this story became even more critical in the wake of the events of August 2021 in Afghanistan, and the return of the Taliban to power. It seemed essential to document the unique 15-year Hiroshima Fellowship, and to learn from the challenges and accomplishments of an Afghan-driven international development effort, before the recollections were lost.Part of the UNITAR Afghan Fellowship Legacy Projects (AFLP) the book has brought together authors from among the 500 alumni, mentors, faculty members, partners, and UNITAR staff, who took part and here share their experiences and analysis of the Fellowship over the years - its unique structure, its philosophy and modus operandi, its particular emphasis on building, and sustaining, a community of professionals and international mentors.Each chapter tells a what, why, and how story, lessons learned, impressions or reminisces of the Fellows' learning and projects during many training cycles.
