Unveil the complexities surrounding the term "radical imam" in post-revolutionary Tunisia through a meticulous examination of the state's rhetorical strategy. Following the upheaval of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, a wave of expulsions targeted state-appointed imams accused of complicity with the former regime. In their place emerged a new generation of preachers challenging the state's control over religious life, triggering what became known as "the crisis of the mosques."This thesis delves into the state's response to this crisis, exploring how it sought to restore control by disciplining or removing the newly installed imams labeled as "radicals" and "extremists." The central inquiry revolves around understanding the criteria for labeling, whether based on beliefs, rhetoric, or the unconventional means of taking office.

Within the pages of Balondo Through the Ages 1100‒2013, author and Balondo expert Aja Oro properly documents the Balondo story, in the form of a history book, for the perusal of all humankind. The information contained in this book is also going to be preserved in the form of a Balondo website. Balondo Cultural Heritage, Inc., which will act as a museum and clearinghouse for research materials unique to the Balondo experience, has also been established. Ultimately, when all of the unmet goals and objectives pertaining to Balondo and its history have been achieved, the Balondo people will find themselves once again on the world map -- a prospect that will enable them to emerge from their seeming obscurity and be recognized as one of the best African cultures in the world.Balondo Through the Ages is the first original one-time work written by Aja Oro, a pure Balondo man who has chronicled throughout the pages of this book about a thousand years of the Balondo story, highlighting the two historical voyages made by Balondo from the Congo to Calabar, Nigeria, and then to the south-west littoral region of Cameroon. Also, in a bid to ensure that the narrative will be viewed as a comprehensive rather than a disjointed panorama, Aja Oro has equally made the case for the many threads of continuity running through Balondo's total historical experience without which it would not have been easy to read and understand such an unprecedented extraordinary long period in the Balondo historical experience as a whole.

The AmaNdebele War was part of the expansion of the British Empire in Africa in the late Nineteenth Century and part of Cecil Rhodes' plan to expand two Empires: his own through the British South Africa Company, and that of Queen Victoria. It discusses the international conflict which this expansion caused, especially with Portugal and the Boer Republics, who both claimed the rights to the region which eventually became known as Rhodesia.Rhodes' plans had only lukewarm support from the British Government which tried to ensure that the rights of the indigenous peoples of southern Africa were protected from the most outrageous attacks on their way of life. Which meant it was wary of allowing Rhodes to execute his most outrageous plans to exploit Southern Africa. However it was Company's desire to develop the land which had been given to them by Charter from the Government which brought them into conflict with native Africans whose way of life was not compatible to Victorian sensibility and morality and eventually led to war.The book describes the hazardous journey to Mashonaland which was taken by would be prospectors and settlers who had been promised riches in gold and land by the Company in order to boost its shares. The horror of AmaNdebele raids on the people of Mashonaland which were part of their accepted way of life and the terrifying effects their brutality had on the settlers who demanded that GuBulawayo and the AmaNdebele king be captured and the raiding stopped. This was partly achieved but only after the famous massacre of a patrol by AmaNdebele Impis. The story is full of larger-than-life characters such as Jameson the Administrator, Patrick Forbes, the out of place military commander, Allan Wilson, the Scottish hero and leader of men, Pieter Raaff, a survivor of the First Boer War, Sir Henry Loch, the High Commissioner and, Burnham and Ingram, the American Scouts without whose assistance British casualties would have been much higher and of course, Lobengula the Chief of the AmaNdebele, who having unwittingly given away his land for money and guns was forced to attempt to drive away an invading army armed with superior weapons but failed. His escape and pursuit became one of the tales of daring do in the Victorian psyche but the search for who to blame almost cost the Company its Charter. The book concludes with a detailed examination of the characters three leaders of the invading force and analyzes how Leander Starr Jameson's decision to select them to lead the pursuit of Lobengula contributed to its failure.

Canada's varied roles in the South African War, from mounted troops to artillery, highlight its complex contribution and military impact. The story of Canada in the South African War is a complex one. How it even came about that the Canadian Government agreed to the dispatch of troops has its many talking points.Serving as units integrated within a larger British force, several contingents were sent during the course of the conflict, the first being the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry. Subsequent contingents were made up mostly of mounted troops but also artillery and later a field hospital. The first mounted units were the 1st and 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, the first of these becoming the Royal Canadian Dragoons. Then there was the privately raised Strathcona's Horse. Of considerable interest are the more than 1000 Canadians who enlisted in the South African Constabulary. There was no single manner in which the Canadian Contingents were raised and paid for, though the men mostly served under fixed terms of enlistment. Those joining the South African Constabulary, however, frequently found themselves in action for longer periods as, though they were raised as a para-military police force, the unanticipated extended period of hostilities meant they were engaged in much more of a military role than had been expected.Canada's role in the changing and evolving conditions of the South African War was complex and varied, and Canadian troops rose to the task and performed well. The impact of the war on the development of the Canadian military is also of considerable interest.

Freshly out from under French colonial rule in 1960, the West African nation of Dahomey (now Benin) became home to the largest number of coups d'état in history, earning the reputation of the "sick child of Africa." Country politics eventually aligned with Marxist and socialist ideologies stimulating French opposition that resulted in mercenary intervention. Opération Crevette: Benin, Mercenaries, and the Survival of a New State brings together the voices of the involved mercenaries, political rulers, and local witnesses to reveal a struggle for power in the former French colony. Opération Crevette was a mercenary operation which was intended to remove Benin's eleventh president from power in the 1970s. This book analyzes the political, social, and economic factors that led to this operation, as well as the foreign interference from nations like France and America. Les and Monique Sosnowski provide a unique perspective of international politics, exposing French instigated military intervention and the immense influence Western nations have played in shaping the Africa we know today.

"Set in a fictional town, at a fictional school, Linda N. Masi's debut novel, Fine Dreams, rewrites myth and history. Framed by a ghost's first-person narrative, the book centers on four young friends, the stars of their school's track team. While studying for exams, they are kidnapped and taken to a terrorist encampment. Two are claimed as "wives" by their captors, one is forced to wear a suicide vest, and each is subjected to appalling violence and terror. While their stories resonate with a widely publicized 2014 abduction, these four young women could have been taken in any of the many incidents that have plagued the Nigerian people for years. Even though they are abducted and abused by men in power and forced to survive in a dark place like Persephone, Masi's protagonists offer new endings for Persephone's story. In Masi's telling, these resilient young women recover their dreams and hopes to live in daylight once again. No matter where they travel or where they stay, they gain self-determination and reclaim their dreams"--

Maggie survived an apocalypse of hungry shadows by becoming invisible, only to drown during a violent telepathic assault.Living on the edge of Bloemfontein, in South Africa, Maggie scavenges for scraps and grapples with the unreality, a collection of strange visions and slippery thoughts caused by the attack. When she's approached by strangers who claim she can destroy the shadow monsters, Maggie faces a dilemma: are these people real, and if so, how can she ensure they stay with her forever? The Invisible Girl is about seeing the world differently, and society's tendency to 'other' people who make them uncomfortable. Many different ideas and experiences inspired this story: life in a backwater city, victim shaming and the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and the search for community in a world that doesn't tolerate strangeness well.
