Several consecutive global crises, including the collapse of the Socialist bloc, the global economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the current war in Ukraine have put the lives of citizens of former Yugoslavia and the former Soviet Union under threat. How do the most affected amongst them manage to survive global crises? How do their experiences from previous crises influence their behavior when a new global crisis emerges? Through a unique comparison of life paths of post-Yugoslav and post-Soviet migrants and their communities across Europe, the Americas, and Africa, Sanja Tepavcevic offers a novel theoretical approach revealing a relationship between loyalty to communities and resilience to global crises. For many post-Yugoslav and post-Soviet migrants, the (perception of) exclusion from communities that they belonged to prior to a crisis tends to reshape their sense of belonging and modifies their loyalty to and identification with a community or collective identity. These processes represent psychological and cultural (or ¿soft¿) forms of resilience. Similarly, as Tepavcevic demonstrates, greater physical (or ¿tangible¿) resilience shows itself in emigration and the formation of alternative communities. By combining and analyzing narratives, participant observations, and theories of resilience and loyalty borrowed from social, behavioral, and the natural sciences, Tepavcevic demonstrates that global crises challenge existing communities and generate various forms of migrant communities, loyalty, and resilience. Anabasis (an "expedition up from") is the most famous work of the Ancient Greek professional soldier and writer Xenophon. It narrates the expedition of a large army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to help him seize the throne of Persia from his brother, Artaxerxes II, in 401 BC. The seven books making up the Anabasis were composed circa 370 BC. Though as an Ancient Greek vocabulary word, ᾰ̓νᾰ́βᾰσῐς means "embarkation", "ascent" or "mounting up", the title Anabasis is rendered in translation as The March Up Country or as The March of the Ten Thousand. The narration of the army's journey across Asia Minor and Mesopotamia is Xenophon's best known work, and "one of the great adventures in human history". Xenophon, in his Hellenica, did not cover the retreat of Cyrus but instead referred the reader to the Anabasis by "Themistogenes of Syracuse"-the tenth-century Suda also describes Anabasis as being the work of Themistogenes, "preserved among the works of Xenophon", in the entry Θεμιστογένεης. Aside from these two references, there is no authority for there being a contemporary Anabasis written by "Themistogenes of Syracuse", and indeed no mention of such a person in any other context. The Greek term anabasis referred to an expedition from a coastline into the interior of a country. While the journey of Cyrus is an anabasis from Ionia on the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea, to the interior of Asia Minor and Mesopotamia, most of Xenophon's narrative is taken up with the return march of Xenophon and the Ten Thousand, from the interior of Babylon to the coast of the Black Sea. Socrates makes a cameo appearance, when Xenophon asks whether he ought to accompany the expedition. The short episode demonstrates the reverence of Socrates for the Oracle of Delphi. Xenophon's account of the exploit resounded through Greece, where, two generations later, some surmise, it may have inspired Philip of Macedon to believe that a lean and disciplined Hellene army might be relied upon to defeat a Persian army many times its size. Besides military history, the Anabasis has found use as a tool for the teaching of classical philosophy; the principles of statesmanship and politics exhibited by the army can be seen as exemplifying Socratic philosophy. Der Leinenpanzer war der vorherrschende Brustpanzertyp im klassischen Griechenland. Er wurde von Hopliten, vielen Reitern sowie auch leichter ausgerüsteten Peltasten getragen. Aufgrund seiner vergänglichen Materialen ist kein Exemplar dieser Rüstung bis heute erhalten. Dennoch ist es dank der Informationen aus archäologischen und literarischen Quellen möglich, einige Aussagen über die Beschaffenheit und den Aufbau des Leinenpanzers zu tätigen. Genauere Information über seine Konstruktion und seine Schutzwirkung sind allerdings nur durch experimentalarchäologische Versuche zu erlangen. Seit mehreren Jahren werden entsprechende Experimente vom Hamburger Projekt "linothorax" durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Band liefert ein erstes umfassendes Zwischenfazit dieser Arbeit. Er enthält einen Überblick über den Hopliten als Träger der Rüstung, die wichtigsten Quellen, die Hamburger Experimente und die Schutzwirkung des Leinenpanzers. In weiteren Kapiteln werden detaillierte Beschreibungen der Herstellungen von Leinenpanzer-platten, Bronzeschuppen und Brustpanzern geboten. Es diente insgesamt der Beseitigung des Unwissens, das im Hinblick auf die postbyzantinischen Griechen und ihre Konfessionskultur noch vorherrschte. Das Buch arbeitet ein bisher wenig erforschtes Migrationsphänomen auf und erläutert aus Sicht der Wissens-, Migrations- und Konfessionsgeschichte die besondere Relevanz der Griechen im Alten Reich.

In order for the playful cloud to accomplish his goal, he doesn't hesitate to ask for help from the Ruler of the Winds, Aeolus, to guide him on his way. He promises Aeolus that he will be very careful and that he will diligently follow his wise directions, as long as he helps him make his dream come true. This is an entertaining and educational story written in two languages, Greek and English, which teaches Greece's history and geography, while emphasizing the necessity of obedience and the importance of consequence.

Amidst growth in the history of mentalities - a developing research trend in Western historiography from the 1960s - there has been a greater interest in interrogating various types of historical sources, among which are testaments. Consequently, interdisciplinary analysis of this particular category of documents - that Roger Aubenas called "une source historique prometteuse" - with corroboration from information provided by other such sources, could undoubtedly offer new perspectives for a better understanding of family history, private life, mentalities, religious beliefs and behaviours, individual and collective attitudes and sensibilities, in earlier and more recent times. The present volume addresses this need and comprises 15 of the 27 papers presented during the conference in the autumn of last year at the "Nicolae Iorga" History Institute. The event was organized within a research project funded by the UEFISCDI and was attended by specialists from Romania and abroad (France, Greece, Bulgaria, and Italy). All these studies - aside from their length and methodology - have a common topic: the complex testamentary practices in Western Europe (France and Switzerland) and in the North-Danubian space. The topics include the testators' interest in the post-mortem destiny of the soul and the perpetuation of their memory, the various strategies used to preserve the family patrimony, and the unavoidable family conflicts when descendants challenged decisions over family wealth, primarily when the deceased did not consider, or time did not allow it, to draft a will.
