Following decades of silence about the involvement of doctors, medical researchers and other health professionals in the Holocaust and other National Socialist (Nazi) crimes, scholars in recent years have produced a growing body of research that reveals the pervasive extent of that complicity. This interdisciplinary collection of studies presents documentation of the critical role medicine played in realizing the policies of Hitler's regime. It traces the history of Nazi medicine from its roots in the racial theories of the 1920s, through its manifestations during the Nazi period, on to legacies and continuities from the postwar years to the present.

"The Second World War wreaked unprecedented devastation throughout Europe, necessitating monumental reconstruction efforts that burdened not only governments, but the lives of ordinary citizens. War, Massacre, and Recovery in Central Italy, 1943-1948 examines this transitional period in the province of Arezzo by detailing the daily experiences of civilians through the traumas of war and the difficulties of recovery. Studying the aftermath of war in a new and insightful way, Victoria C. Belco shifts the perspective from the national to the local level. With this localized focus, she provides valuable insight into the ways in which civilians coped with an overwhelming range of problems--from adjusting to Allied occupation and widespread displacement to rampant unemployment and the restructuring of local administrations and institutions after fascism. Recreating the post-war atmosphere of disorder, need, and political upheaval, Belco shows how the competing community interests caused social fragmentations that impeded change, while the unity of a shared past prevented civil war."--

  • - De tyske flygtninge i Skanderborg 1945-1946
af Martin Philipsen Mølgaard & Julie de Vos
    223,95 kr.

" USS Houston -The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast"In the shadow of World War II's swelling storm, "The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast" by Sidney St. James plunges into the heart of naval warfare. This gripping historical novel recounts the harrowing tale of the USS Houston and her gallant crew in the face of insurmountable odds.February 1942: As the tides of war draw ever closer, the USS Houston, alongside her ally, the Australian light cruiser HMAS Perth, finds herself entangled in a deadly dance with the formidable Japanese Imperial Navy in the Java Sea. The book masterfully reconstructs the desperate struggle of Allied forces, led by Dutch Rear Admiral Karel Doorman, to thwart a powerful Japanese convoy off the coast of Java-an island key to the control of Southeast Asia.In the largest surface battle since Jutland, readers are thrust onto the decks of the Houston and her sister ships, experiencing firsthand the chaos, bravery, and sacrifice that define naval combat. The narrative crescendos in the Battle of Java Sea, where a devastating blow leaves Houston and Perth in a precarious retreat to the port of Tanjung Priok. But the respite is short-lived. With limited fuel and munitions, the two ships embark on a perilous journey through the Sunda Strait, unaware of the lurking Japanese Western Attack Force. In a thrilling twist of fate, they stumble upon this enemy fleet, igniting a ferocious midnight battle in Bantam Bay.St. James masterfully captures the chaotic close-quarter combat where ships clash at mere 200 yards, amidst smoke screens and a maelstrom of gunfire. The vivid portrayal of the Japanese forces mistakenly firing upon their own transports adds a layer of intensity and suspense, only for them to recalibrate and unleash their lethal accuracy. The battle reaches its climax as Perth succumbs to the sea, and the USS Houston stands alone, fighting valiantly against overwhelming odds."The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast" is more than just a war story; it's a tribute to resilience, brotherhood, and the indomitable human spirit. St. James brings to life the courage of sailors and Marines, painting a vivid picture of heroism and sacrifice that echoes through history. This novel is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the untold stories of World War II, a testament to those who faced the darkest hours with valor and determination.

In September 1933, the Peruvian Rubber Company delivers nineteen indigenous people from the Amazon to a Buenos Aires businessman. Unexpected among the human cargo is a box, harboring a sloth with a fascinating yet terrifying secret: the ability to create erotically explosive telepathic connections between people. What ensues is a raucous satire of men's fear of women's bodies, of the illusion of logic in the structures of so-called civilization, and the way class and race obscure identities when the observer is a man with power. In The National Telepathy, Roque Larraquy, one of the most original voices in contemporary Argentine literature, brings us a literary highwire act, an over-the-top comic grotesque about atrocity. This shocking, bizarre, funny, imaginative novel lays all-too-bare the secret longings and not-so-secret machinations of a social class that will stop at nothing in order to stay on top.

  • af David Ross

In this gripping biography of Giuseppe (Beppe) Porcheddu his grandson, David Ross, pieces together the extraordinary strands of his short but action-packed life. Beppe was born into a prosperous family in Turin, Italy. His father, however, had been born in poverty but became one of Italy's greatest construction engineers. In 1917 Beppe volunteered to join the Alpine troops to fight the Austrians and Germans in the Italian Alps. Nearly killed by a grenade he made a miraculous recovery but could only walk with the aid of a stick. Despite a degree in architecture he was drawn to art. Self-taught, he soon achieved major acclaim and aged 27 he was knighted by the King for services to the arts. Marriage followed but with the rise of Mussolini, his anti-fascist views led to exile in France for him and his family. Returning to Italy during the build up to World War II, he relocated to the Italian Riviera where he was less well-known. Hiding his anti-fascism he became a key figure in the clandestine partisan resistance. He helped in the arming and organisation of the local partisans and his villa became a key meeting place. At great risk to himself and his family, Beppe sheltered two British Army officers who were escaped prisoners-of-war, one of whom was later to marry his daughter. Surviving arrest and interrogation by the Fascists, Beppe continued his partisan activities. With the end of the war, Beppe returned to his art but following the marriages of his daughters, he disappeared. With unique access to family papers and previously undiscovered records and letters, Ross has been able to shine a light on this complex, brave and highly-principled man and explore the theories into Beppe's mysterious disappearance.

"If the function of the artist is to see, the first duty of the critic is to understand what the artist saw."– J.E.H. MacDonaldTo See What He Saw focuses on the Lake O’Hara work produced by English-Canadian artist and Group of Seven member James Edward Hervey (J.E.H.) MacDonald, R.C A. (1873–1932) between 1924 and 1932. The book documents MacDonald’s seven trips to Yoho National Park in the Rocky Mountains of eastern British Columbia, Canada, and presents a detailed catalogue of the resulting en plein air sketches and the subsequent studio works completed during the last nine years of his life. The book features more than 200 of MacDonald’s western works from this period, organized geographically with en plein air sketches and studio work illustrated side by side. Each sketch is accompanied by at least one present-day photograph, many of which are taken from the exact rocky perch where MacDonald sat. Save for the forest growth since the 1920s, this pairing enables the viewer to see what MacDonald saw, and to understand how he processed the landscape before him. The book includes full transcripts of diaries, essays, and poems from which detailed, chronological descriptions of MacDonald's seven trips have been compiled. Relevant excerpts and original research further contextualize and illuminate the artist’s practices for specific sketches wherever possible.Of interest to Group of Seven and Canadian art collectors, curators, historians, students, and enthusiasts alike, this book is produced in conjunction with a 2024 exhibition at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Alberta. To See What He Saw offers a comprehensive examination of this esteemed artist’s painting process, finished works, and mindset over this period, and provides a unique lens through which to view MacDonald’s O’Hara work—a perspective that has not previously been fully explored in exhibition or in publication.

When his uncle runs off to visit Alastair's grave for the first time, Tom Apollyon finds their family roles reversed: he feels obligated to watch over Paul, who never makes impulsive decisions while drunk. The catch is The Shuck-not a peaceful cemetery near the sea, just a pub near the sea-actually contains the polite, but unpredictable, spirit of Paul's former lover.Benson grudgingly communicates with Alastair even though David Mills is best suited to communing with the dead. Unfortunately, David is much too busy running a pub in the Apollyons'-and one devoted selkie's-absence to be a proper witch. He's only just broken a bewitchment that he didn't even know he cast, after all. There's also the tiny matter of plotting murder under Lennie's nose, despite how David suspects they'll see killing as anything but chivalric. But David isn't alone. Nearly everyone connected to The Shuck is keeping something to themselves; closely held truths may prevent anyone's true love from ever taking root. Between these walls, self-fulfilling prophecies seem to be most victorious. Even the restless dead can't secure what they want... fate or faith may need to intervene.

Conceived in a storytelling workshop given by Spalding Gray, Old Man In a Baseball Cap is not your typical story of World War II. Rochlin recounts in gritty detail how he--an ordinary young man--was thrust into outrageous circumstances during an extraordinary time. Whether he's bumping up against the army's bigotry because he's Jewish, aiding in the delivery of a baby by cesarean section, being ordered to obliterate a Hungarian village, or parachuting from his plane in the middle of Yugoslavia and then walking 400 kilometers to safety with an amorous guide, Rochlin captures the Intensely powerful experience of a teenager away from home for the first time. Old Man In a Baseball Cap is an astonishingly fresh, candid look at "the last good war." At once naive, candid, and wise, Fred Rochlin's voice is unforgettable.

Perhaps no novel since A Seperate Peace has so superbly captured the impingement of a world at war upon a safe and sheltered environment. The place in Mendoza, a small oil-refining town thirty miles east of San Francisco. The time encompassed is World War II, from the bombing of Pearl Harbor until the bombing of Hiroshima. The narrator and heroine of the story is the fierce yet enchanting Suse Hansen. In the intervening four years, we watch with compassion as Suse evolves from a tomboy who wishes to be a trapeze artist to a young person whose moral growth has been as remarkable as her blossoming womanhood. In Suse's perceptions of the war, in her ability to reconcile her unfolding knowledge of human nature with the horrors of the news reports she so anxiously follows, we see a growth that is all the more dramatic for the subtlety and awe with which it is portrayed.

The six years 1939-45 were a time of hardship, change, excitement and tragedy for the residents of Cholsey, a village in rural Berkshire. Rationing, the black-out and shortages affected everyone, while many feared for their loved ones away in the forces. Some of those who could not fight volunteered in the village, becoming members of the Home Guard, Land Army, the Air Raid Protection (ARP) force or the Auxiliary Fire Service. But for 12 men, as listed on Cholsey war memorials, it would be the end of their lives. They were career military men, conscripts and those who volunteered following the outbreak of war, and their ranks ranged from Private to Sergeant Major and Flight Lieutenant. Several died in the retreat of the British Expeditionary Force to Dunkirk, while others were in North Africa, Greece, Italy, France and on the Death Railway in Burma. This book tells their stories for the first time.Based on extensive new research, this work is a record for posterity of the sacrifices made at home and abroad of a generation that rose to an almighty challenge.
