På kun få år opnåede TV2's Nyhederne at blive det mest sete nyhedsprogram; men også andre kanaler meldte sig i kampen om at få andel i danskernes nyhedsforbrug.  Tv-nyheder i konkurrence præsenterer den første samlede analyse af, hvad der er sket med tv-nyhedsformidlingen, siden der kom konkurrence i dansk tv. Gennem en omfattende analyse af udviklingen i tv-nyhedernes form og indhold påvises det, hvordan nyhedsjournalistikken har ændret karakter på en række afgørende områder. Forandringerne i nyhedernes form og indhold skal ses som et led i denne dybtgående forandring af tv-journalistikken og dens relation til finansieringskilder, politikere, kilder og publikum.
