The first edition of this work was printed at the close of the year 1841, with a view only to a limited circulation among the members of the Percy Society; but a demand for it, somewhat unusual when it is considered that its appearance was never advertised to the public, has occasioned the present edition, in which it is believed considerable improvements as well as additions will be found.

It has been the Editor's principal object to form as genuine a collection of the old vernacular rhymes of the English nursery as he possibly could, without admitting any very modem compositions, at least none belonging to the present century.

With the exception of the tar-baby story and one other, all the folk-lore stories herein embodied are new, having come into my hands from various sources during the past ten years. The tar-baby story has been thrown into a rhymed form for the purpose of presenting and preserving what seems to be the genuine version. Those who care for the narratives themselves will no doubt overlook the somewhat monotonous character of the verse. When Uncle Remus sets himself to produce new stories in a form that would seem to be alien to his methods, it is inevitable that his efforts should move along the line of least resistance, which in English is the iambic four-beat movement, the simplest form of narrative verse. Under the circumstances, and in view of his environment, it is natural that he should pay small attention to the misleading rules of the professors of prosody, who seem to have not the slightest notion of the science of English verse. His instinctive love of melody, and his appreciation of the simplest rhythmical move ment, would lead him to ignore syllables and accents and to depend wholly on the time-movement that is inseparable from.

AN edition of the real, original, and uncorrupted melodies of Mother Goose has long been desired by the lovers of ancient poetry. Being myself a lineal descendant of that venerable person, and having in my possession all her original manuscripts with her latest corrections, I was fortunately able to supply this want in a manner which shall leave nothing further to be desired. The present edition, therefore, which I have edited with great care and immense labour, may hence forward be considered the standard edition - the family edition, setting at nought all editions of outside perso ages who have no connexion with the Goose Family.

This makes it more difficult for the pupil to look up words, and encourages him to make himself thoroughly independent by mastering his vocabulary at the outset.

Of these, the last two are at once the most recent and, in my opinion, the most authoritative. Each is the compilation of a professional sailor and avowedly a one - man collection, containing those chanteys only which its author had himself heard and learned at sea. Here, of course, Mr. Whall and Mr. Bullen have the advantage of me. I have no technical or practical knowledge whatever of nautical matters; I have never even heard a chantey sung on board ship. But then I approach the subject from its aesthetic side - my concern is solely with the music of the chantey and with its value as an art - product - and this I contend is quite possible even for one who is as ignorant as I am of the technical details of the subject.

It has all the most popular rhymes and is a great resource for anyone who remembers these charming parts of childhood but has less than perfect recall of them. As is natural with an originally oral tradition some of the versions here may be slightly different to the ones you remember from childhood, additionally some are greatly extended from the simple versions we remember to a full length rhyme. Most of us remember Simple Simon met a pie man going to the fair, but few probably know that once Simon made a great snowball and brought it in to roast. This is just one extra verse of many from the full length nursery rhyme.

Being the expression of a race in, or just emerging from bondage, these songs may at first seem to some readers trivial and almost wholly devoid Of literary merit. In phraseology they may appear crude, lacking in that elegance and finish ordinarily associated with poetic excellence; in imagery they are at times exceedingly winter-starved, mediocre, common, drab, scarcely ever rising above the no happy environment of the singers. The outlook upon life and nature is, for the most part, one of imaginative simplicity and child-like naivete; super stitions crowd in upon a worldly wisdom that is elementary, practical, and obvious; and a warped and crooked human nature, developed and fostered by circumstances, shows frequently through the lines. What else might be expected? At the time when these rhymes were in process of being created the conditions under which the American Negro lived and labored were not calculated to inspire him with a desire for the highest artistic expression. Re stricted, cramped, bound in unwilling servitude, he looked about him in his miserable little world to see whatever of the beautiful or happy he might find; that which he discovered is pathetically slight, but, such as it is, it served to keep alive his stunted artist-soul under the most adverse circumstances.
