Concerning Divine Wisdom in the Creation of Man is a selected translation and commentary of Imam al-Ghazali's treatise on the human anatomy and physiology. In it, al-Ghazali masterfully provides the seeker of religious knowledge a window into Allah's creativity through the Islamic study of anatomy. The study of anatomy for the Muslim serves as a potential means to fulfill two distinct goals:To increase one's attachment to the Creator through a deeper appreciation of the details of His creationOr to become a professional with knowledge of diseases and curesThe broad audience of medical students, physicians, healthcare professionals, as well as non-medical seekers of religious knowledge will appreciate the details of human anatomy described by Imam al-Ghazali through an Islamic lens. Readers will also recognize that this discussion, though accurate from the perspective of modern medicine, reflects a distinctly different paradigm from that of modern anatomy and physiology.Imam al-Ghazali asserts that there is a spiritual component to the human being, and that every detail of human anatomy is representative of Allah's qudra, His power, and His wisdom. In this text, al-Ghazali describes these spiritual purposes alongside the physical anatomy, with the same level of clarity and precision. This edition includes Dr. Kamran Riaz's meticulous English translation side-by-side with al-Ghazali's original Arabic text. The translation is followed by over 150 endnotes from Dr. Riaz and Shaykh Mohammed Amin Kholwadia.Author: Imam Abu Hamid al-GhazaliTranslator: Dr. Kamran RiazCommentary: Dr. Kamran Riaz & Shaykh Mohammed Amin KholwadiaIntroduction by Shaykh Mohammed Amin KholwadiaForeword by Dr. Ahsan ArozullahLanguages: English and ArabicHardback Edition: 146 pagesPublisher: Imam Ghazali Publishing
Know that the beginning of guidance is outward piety (taqwa) and the end of guidance is inward piety (ihsan). Only through piety is anything really achieved; only the pious are guided. Piety designates carrying out the commands of God most high and turning aside from what He prohibits, and thus has two parts. In this book Imam Al-Ghazali sets out his ideal of how the religious man should order his life from hour to hour and day to day. The book is divided into three parts, obedience, avoidance of sins and the relationship between God and man and between His creation. This is one of Imam Al-Ghazali's final works, it embodies his life, spirituality and experience.
The Shaykh and Imam, the Proof of Islam, Abû Hâmid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazâlî, may God have mercy upon and be pleased with him, stated:¿Thank God for all His bounties; for even enabling us to thank Him; and prayers and peace be upon the Master of Messengers, Muhammad, His Prophet, Messenger and Servant, upon his family and Companions, and upon his successors after him, his Ministers in his time.I missed, in some of my travels, a facility for extracting from the ¿Ihyâ' ¿ulûm ad-dîn' its essences, due to the difficulty of carrying it around with me, on account of its bulk. Hence I tackled this matter, seeking success and guidance from God and praising His Prophet. It consists of forty chapters. And God guides to the truth.'
"The Book of Contemplation is the thirty-ninth of the forty Books of The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Iòhyåa' 'ulåum al-dn) - and is the very last to appear in English translation. Abåu òHåamid al-Ghazåal's purpose in this Book is to explain the nature and importance of contemplation, or reflection, as an act that enriches the thinking person with increased knowledge of, and wonder at, the Creator and His creation. In Part 1, the author defines and introduces the subject, explaining its importance with reference to the Qur'åan, Hadiths, and sayings of wise and pious Muslims. In Part 2 he expounds his own highly original views as to the nature and fruits of contemplation. Part 3 offers detailed guidance as to the most appropriate and beneficial subjects for reflection, some relating to human traits and actions and others to Divine Attributes and Actions. In Part 4 Ghazåalåiexplores in detail aspects of God's creation which when viewed with an observant eye and considered with a worshipful heart are full of wonders and offer inexhaustible scope for reflection, from the artistry of the spider and bee to the unimaginable vastness of the heavens, which themselves are dwarfed by what lies beyond them. Abåu òHåamid al-Ghazåalåi(d. 1111) was a leading jurist, theologian, and spiritual master of the golden age of Islam, and he remains its truest advocate in modern times. As a teacher of both inward and outward aspects of faith, he presented these practical teachings in systematic form, with eloquence and precision, in his forty-part compendium of Islamic knowledge"--
Abu hamid al-Ghazali discusses the fundamentals and inner meanings of the pilgrimage, including its pillars, preconditions, and obligations. The book begins with an introduction on the merits of the pilgrimage and its rewards. Al-Ghazali explains the Qur'anic statement announcing the pilgrimage: And proclaim to the people the pilgrimage; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass--that they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of God on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals.
In The Mysteries of Purification (Kitab asrar al tahara), the third of the forty books of the Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya' 'ulum al-din), Abu Hamid al-Ghazali explains the fundamentals of the purification that is necessary in order to perform the five daily prayers.
The Book of Knowledge is the foundation of the forty books of the Revival of the Religious Sciences, Imam al-Ghazali's magnum opus. In the Book of Knowledge, he defines knowledge, its relation to faith, theology, and jurisprudence. The book deals with the virtue of knowledge from both rational and traditional points of view. It elucidates the types of knowledge and the nature of people's obligation to seek knowledge. Imam al-Ghazali defines jurisprudence and theology as branches of Islamic knowledge, then outlines those fields that people incorrectly consider to be Islamic disciplines, and distinguishes the praiseworthy from the blameworthy. He describes in detail the perils of disputation and the reasons people engage in debate and dialectics. He also considers the conduct incumbent on the teacher and student, and warns of the perils that can befall those pursuing knowledge. Finally, Imam al-Ghazali discusses the virtues and categories of the intellect and the prophetic traditions related to it.
In The Book of the Lawful and the Unlawful, Abu amid al-Ghazali aims to teach his readers firstly the theory of what is lawful and what is unlawful and how to deal with dubious or ambiguous issues, and secondly how to apply the knowledge they have gained to their everyday lives.
This beautiful edition comprises forty gems from al-Ghazali's inexhaustible treasury of writings with accompanying commentaries.
