Unsere Zeit hat mehr als irgend eine frühere der Sage ihr Recht angedeihen lassen, und der Forscher geht nicht mehr vornehm an ihr vorüber, sondern erkennt in ihr eine Quelle der Geschichte, die, wenn sie auch oft die geschichtlichen Thatsachen nicht in ihrer objektiven Wirklichkeit darstellt, doch immerhin der größesten Aufmerksamkeit werth ist, indem sie dieselben nach der Auffassungsweise der Massen kennen lehrt. Von ganz besonderer Wichtigkeit wird die Sage daher da, wo es der Geschichte grade um diese Auffassungsweise zu thun ist, wo sie ein Volk in seinem innern Leben kennen lernen will, und um so größer muß diese Wichtigkeit werden, je mehr die übrigen Quellen, aus denen jene sich schöpfen ließe, versiegt sind. Das ist aber bei unserer Mythologie der Fall; nur spärlich sind die älteren Nachrichten über dieselbe, die Fülle der mythischen Vorstellungen unserer Vorfahren liegt in der Sage, und die Geschichte, will sie anders den Zustand des vorchristlichen religiösen Bewußtseins der Deutschen kennen lernen, hat sich vorzugsweise an diese zu wenden.
