Les cinq sermons sur saint Paul, d'Adolphe Monod, forment un ensemble apologétique des plus admirés, depuis qu'il ont été prononcés à Paris vers 1850, puis réunis en un volume. Ils démontrent que sans l'apôtre Paul, le christianisme, et par conséquent le monde actuel, ne seraient pas ce qu'ils sont aujourd'hui. Ironiquement d'ailleurs, ce jugement est souvent partagé par les ennemis modernes du grand missionnaire, qui l'accuse d'avoir inventé le christianisme. En réalité il ne saurait exister aucune opposition entre l'enseignement de Jésus-Christ, et celui de Paul, puisque ce dernier a été l'instrument spécialement choisi et préparé par le premier, pour apporter son Évangile aux Nations. Ces sermons ne sont ni dogmatiques, ni exégétiques, ni a fortiori textuels, mais pleins de vie, de conviction, de sérieux et d'émulation spirituelle. On y retrouve l'orateur puissant du Réveil que fut Adolphe Monod, et on y découvre combien lui-même a pratiqué avec succès ce qu'il attendait de ses auditeurs : devenir imitateur de saint Paul. Le texte de cette reproduction ThéoTeX est celui de l'édition de 1851.
Cet ouvrage aujourd'hui oublié, du grand prédicateur protestant Adolphe Monod, fut réédité plus de vingt fois au dix-neuvième siècle. Sous forme de dialogues et d'échange de lettres entre quatre personnages, il démontre pourquoi la lecture de la Bible est absolument essentielle à la foi et à la vie chrétienne. Sans doute le public catholique pratiquant, auquel il était destiné, a quasiment disparu aujourd'hui ; cependant les exposés de la vraie doctrine chrétienne, selon les Écritures, la pertinence et la force des arguments, ont gardé toute leur valeur, et restent toujours aussi appropriés aux âmes de notre temps. Malgré son ton informel, nous tenons là un exemplaire de la meilleure apologétique, écrite par un maître de la chaire et un profond connaisseur du coeur humain. A la fin du livre, Monod nous informe d'ailleurs, que loin d'être imaginaires, les personnages qu'il fait parler, sont les figures à peine retouchées d'une histoire réelle : ce fait n'est sans doute pas étranger au plaisir qu'on a d'en lire le récit, et au succès que connut naguère Lucile. Cette édition ThéoTeX reproduit celle de 1881.
