Indiäs relation with the Arabian Peninsula or Gulf region dates back to antiquity. It may even be claimed that relations are as old as the history itself. There are a lot of historical evidences for this time-tested cultural tie up. The Old Testament bears ample evidence for maritime mercantile relations between India and the Arab world during Solomon¿s period. Arabs¿ Indian connection predates the spread of Islam. There is commonly held view that from about 2500 years ago, the lands of West Asia and North Africa, stretching from Egypt to Iran had traded regularly with Indus Valley. The Arabs have contributed even to the naming of this region, Hindustan. The spread of Islam fostered this linkage tremendously. From the time immemorial these two civilizations have been in constant contact with the exchange of goods, ideas, cultures and people of each other. India, throughout the ages, has enjoyed cordial relations with the Arab world and has enriched each other¿s culture and civilization.
The purpose of this work ¿Arab Culture and Islamic Heritage¿ is to explain to the world, in as concise a manner as possible, the perspectives on Arab and Indian Islamic Writings and Heritages. The Arabs were the inheritors of the scientific tradition. They preserved, elaborated and passed it to the rest of the world. The term Arab refers to culture and language. The Arab world stretches across 22 countries namely Algeria, Bahrain, the Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. This book is a collection of nine articles on Arab and Indian Islamic Perspectives. The five articles shed light on Indian Islamic Studies,i.e., The Prophet¿s Panegyrics, The Indian Islamic Scholar and Educationist-Azad, Islamic Ethics in ¿Thirukkural¿, Islamic Legendary Characters in the Novel ¿Tamirappattanam¿ and Islamic Endowments in Tamil Nadu. The remaining four articles focus on Arab Culture, i.e., Arabic Language in India, Modern Women Writers of Egypt and Lebanon ,Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz and the Maq¿m¿t of al-Hamadhani.
Arabic belongs to the Semitic group of languages. Ibn Qahtan is popularly known as the father of this language. Between the ninth and twelfth centuries more works, philosophical, medical, historical, religious, astronomical and geographical were produced through the medium of Arabic than through any other tongue. The non-Arab community began to depend on import of petrol from the Arab world. This dependence increased greatly during the first half of the twentieth century. This concern created strong connections between non¿Arabs and Arabs. One of the results of these connections was the interest of non-Arabs in Arabic. Today, it is one of the official languages of the UNO and is spoken by a large group of masses in Asia and Africa. Would you believe India has more than 50,000 people whose mother tongue is Arabic? According to 2001 Census data on linguistic groups, India had 51,728 people whose mother tongue is Arabic. Arabic is the mother tongue in some 20 nations stretching from the Atlantic coast of North Africa in the west to the Sultanate of Oman in the East, and from Syria in the north to Sudan in the south. Arabic plays a vital role in the commercial and cultural fields.
Panegyrics on the Holy Prophet (PBUH) occupy a significant place in the realm of Islamic literature and in the loyalty to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Each and every Muslim is expected to cultivate the most ardent love and the highest respect for the Leader of Islam of the two worlds. During the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH),Panegyrics and odes were recited in his gracious presence, and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appreciated and encouraged. Spiritual attraction towards Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) has been a key inspiration for producing countless qualified literary works in all languages throughout ages. Literature extolling Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) has contributed to this genre called Panegyric (al-Madih al-Nabawi or al-Madaaih al-Nabawiyya) in a big way.Odes in praise of the Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) are distinct genre of Islamic poetry, which first emerged during his lifetime and have continued after his death in 632. Notable Muslim poets who composed such works during his life include Ka'b ibn Malik, Käb ibn Zuhayr, al-Nabigha al-Jädi, and Abd Allah ibn Rawahah. After the Prophet¿s death, many poets and scholars such as al-Busiri, Shawqi, and others continued to compose panegyric poems.
